I don't really get what they meant by Empowering but I'm guessing its when you use a Skill during the mini game, Doing a Perfect, Radical, etc. will increase the stats of the move and its buffs. (This is just a guess I have no idea if this is the actually empowering system)

boombox's abilities and knockback puts pressure on enemies & disrupts their movement so he's better when you're around teammates

In short: Instead of timing your m1s to it you can try timing your moves to it.
