I like how Nicko McBrain sounds, very unique and recognizable.
To me, Gavin Harrison has an amazing sound overall, but the sound of the snare, man... That's out of this world.
No doubt, I always liked his tom tuning and drum choice
Yes definitely Spin Doctors drum sound always great
The unison ghost strokes with the kick is what really made me take notice to the sound of those drums.
Love the sound of Elvin Jones :D
Thank you, Sir!
You are welcome!
Simply the best tuning video I ever saw...will be referring back to this several times!
Thank you George. I appreciate the support
Bonham's tuning is the one for me.
There's a guy on Instagram right now using that larger than life Bonham sound right now. I can't think of his name at the moment, but I really like what he's doing over there.
Ive always done tuning by ear. And studio guys would do all this crap to my sound but live settings the front of house would always give me props on the kits sound.
There have been a few times I had to stop an overzealous sound engineer from gaff taping my drums. lol
I love Dejohnette's tuning on the live from Japan with Dave Liebman , Wayne Shorter, Eddy Gomez and Richie Beirach...I had it on DVD back in the day, but you can find it on this here site now.
He always seems to have a snare sound that cracks like a rock back beat and a kick sound that blends better with the upright bass than most. Thank you for the comment. I just took a break to listen to some Jack, it was nice.
Tom Petty, Damn the Torpedoes ... Stan Lynch playing Tama Imperialstars (I believe), with a 6.5" black beauty snare. Listen to "Don't Do Me Like That" - phenomenal drum sound / recording on this song (and that whole album). The toms in the first part of that song/recording are just perfect.
Nice fat snare and you can hear detail of what's happening in the drum part. It's a good sound, but the character of the sound of the snare on the track You Don't Know How It Feels (different album of course) is one of my favorites ever.
Nice tom tuning tutorial, mate. (tongue twister, ha!)
I've used a very similar technique for years.
QUESTION:
Was your lavalier mic the only microphone used to record the audio in this video?
If so, do you mind me asking which brand and model it is?
I'm looking to buy a decent lav mic to record my dialogue.
Cheers!

EDIT: Jim Keltner's drum tuning is always on point.
That lav mic is the TASCAM DR-10L and yes, every time you see me out in front of the drums that's the only mic I'm using. And not that you asked but, when I'm on the drums I really enjoy the Xvive T9 in ear monitors. I made a whole video about them HERE: ua-cam.com/video/CrhvOuhypwQ/v-deo.html

Thanks for the quick reply and info. I've already got my AKG N5005 IEMs, but it never hurts to have a backup. ;)
Cheers
For sure

Thank you for posting this :) do you apply lectric shave to the head while it is on the tom or do you apply when the head is off the tom?
I just leave it on the drum. I think it's mostly alcohol that evaporates quickly and doesn't damage anything on the drum
@DrumTipTuesday specifically i didn't know if it works while the head is under tension to take out those divots. To me it makes sense for the head to be loose but I don't know.
