  • Today I wanted to chat about all the little interesting details that make up physical Nintendo Switch games and how they can change over time. I hope you found some of these small details as interesting as I do and let me know if I missed anything or if there are any other things you've noticed when collecting for other systems :)

    P.S. I've been testing my phone recording more and I think it's better than my DSLR camera (for both video & audio-wise). I unfortunately have to use the back camera so I had a few framing & eye contact issues in this video that I'll hopefully resolve in the future.

    Thanks for teaching us 🥰! One point: triangles in PAL regions are for the different language variants, not the PEGI. That language triangles are in PAL games since N64 or GameCube I think!

    Great work.
    I’ve been doing a lot of research on Nintendo (Switch) published games. Was considering making a video (not on this profile), but you got that part covered.
    I’ve also concluded the idea of print run is often being conflated with builds/revisions. There seems to be more nuance and you’re helping uncover it as you make more vids, kudos. Your detail about the actual printed code on the cartridge is a great note.
    For cover art, 00001 and 00002 usually means there was a revision and/or addition to the cover art.
    00000 versions are usually earlier/launch releases, but doesn’t totally mean first print and could be a later run. it’s dependent whether a cover art revision is needed. A great example is Xenoblade Chronicles 2 to back up my theory. The reason VGP had 00000 XBC2 for sale is because a cover art revision wasn’t necessary due to it being sold in Canada. In the USA, there was an additional warning and website added to the back which led to a lot of games getting 00001 covers. Along with that update, some older 2017 titles also got a revised ESRB on the front as well to include Spanish. Breath of the wild is a good example. Whilst Mario Kart 8 deluxe got the ESRB update on the 00002 version.
    Another detail to note is the alphanumeric code to the left of the cover identifier…HAC P AZ3HA USA (as an example). It will indicate region, USA, CAN, USZ. USZ usually caters to North America region and are trilingual. Whilst USA will have Eng or Eng&Sp, and CAN will have Eng&Fr.
    What I haven’t figured out, which I haven’t seen on Switch games, is 00100 found on previous gen games: gamecube, Wii, and Wii U covers. If someone has any theories/insight, I’d like to know.
    And to end my long-winded story, here are a few games that were somewhat “partner” published that use the same identifiers but are not fully published by Nintendo:
    Layton
    Minecraft
    Minecraft Dungeons Hero
    Minecraft Dungeons ultimate
    Dark souls remastered
    Doom
    Skyrim
    Travis strikes again
    No more heroes 3
    Hades
    Side note: other games with special cover art on the back…
    Super Mario Odyssey (starter pack)
    Splatoon 2 (starter pack)
    Breath of the Wild (explorer’s edition)

    • @orbalology
      @orbalology  Рік тому

      Yeah I agree, I think it may be a bit misleading to call them 'first prints' which is what I've seen them referenced as elsewhere. Maybe first/original cover or something may be more appropriate, with sequential print runs referred to xx no. cover revision, since they only change minor things with the warranty, restrictions, etc., on the back cover like you mentioned.
      And also thanks for sharing all this info! There's a few things I didn't realize that are really interesting.

    I've just discovered your channel with this video today. I'll definitely check out your other videos.
    I didn't know about the 000-1-2 codes, thanks for teaching me that.
    Since you own some european games, there is something you maybe didn't notice. Like the pined comment said, the green triangle on the spine means it's a british version. On the bottom right of the back, you'll find the code UKV, which stands for United Kingdom Version.
    I'm from Switzerland. Most of my games have a purple triangle and the code GFI for German French Italian. Some others have a pink triangle with the code FRA for France and some others have an indigo triangle with the code GER for Germany (which also use the german USK rating instead of PEGI).
    Another interesting fact. The european cover of Breath of the Wild looks completely different from the american one. Quite surprising since it's the only Switch game (in my knowledge) that doesn't share the same cover for PAL and US versions.

    • @orbalology
      @orbalology  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for clarifying some of the PAL differences! My Animal Crossing is version 1.8.0a losing 4gb of Updates from 2.0.0 and the Mario package which always bothered me. But nothing beats Minecraft where the new cartridge is never updated, losing all the content released in the last 5 years, becoming hostage to poorly planned updates and losing even the icon that could be preserved. Sad😞.

Its the most updated version of the game there is. So all my PS1, PS2, Original Xbox, Xbox 360, etc. games will likely have the "updated" version on the greatest hits copies. It makes me smile when I see the greatest hits versions sell for cheaper than "black label". Its good to be able to understand the differences between the different print runs on the Switch though. A wonderfully informative video, you have me wanting to go through some of my Switch games to see which print runs I have now. It's so sad when I open up a Switch case and see nothingness. Just a pure white depressing void which makes the lack of manuals even more upsetting.
    One of the recent cover art mysteries that took me by storm was Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness on the Gamecube. When I still had the game complete back when I got it, I could've sworn it was holographic. It was destroyed so I had the disc alone for awhile. I saw my friends copy of the game and his cover art wasn't holographic. Which threw me in for a loop, so I did some digging and found that majority of the cover arts were indeed holographic and some weren't. There were also not for resale versions which I'm guessing were bundled with a Platinum Gamecube and also ones that had the "Best Seller" label on them which tended to not be holo. A very interesting case solved.
    Great video as always Orbalology!

    I’ve been buying Switch games for my daughter and there’s several she hasn’t opened yet. I buy games that she’ll eventually enjoy later on (she’s 11) but I look for the variant covers from pack in’s because they’re usually cheaper since the seller likely already has the game and let’s it go for a bit under general selling price and because these are technically rarer. Some are the exact same but will say Not For Resale and I grab those too. I primarily collect for the ps4, and certain titles I will opt to grab on switch.
    Ps4 total: 252 physical (5-10 more pending arrival)
    Switch total: 50 (1 pending arrival)
    I do have 180 on x360, and roughly 50 on xb1- which I don't actively collect for, but will buy possibly on price discrepancy, sales, or availability.
    I've also randomly started buying the hori split pad pro variants. Currently, I have the red, gray, mega man 2, and pokemon legends arceus sets.
    The last few months i've been also picking up large quality hardcover guides and supplemental readings. Zelda botw, dark souls remastered (pricey), horizon forbidden west, elden ring vol 1 (pending vol 2 arrival), octopath traveller complete guide, and the lore of god of war. Future press and dark horse publications make awesome books.

    Very infromative video Emily.
    About Switch's World Editions. In my case the only WE game that I have is Bayonetta 2 (first print according to your video xd). This version didn't include Bayonetta 1 code so the front cover doesn't have the huge label printed. Recently I got physical Bayonetta 1 so now the three games have clean front cover.
    Luckily on Switch games the World Edition label now is on the back of the case so it doesn't bother like the 3DS ones.

    • @orbalology
      @orbalology  Рік тому

      Oh I didn't realize that the MDE/World Edition for Bayonetta 2 didn't come with the 1st game code. I guess that makes sense since the World Editions were originally for regions that didn't have access to the eshop (in the 3DS era - not really sure how it is for the Switch these days but maybe because of the ease to change regions it isn't an issue).
      I did forget to talk about the Switch World Editions in this video haha, maybe because you don't see them in circulation in the west at the moment. But I'm also glad they don't have an ugly emblem obscuring the front cover art like they did for the 3DS.
