    1:29 Yes, with sufficient soil moisture they can be close, but in a humid environment too close can = fungal foliage diseases from foliage not drying off. So in a dry, well circulating air environment, they can be closer. 3:30 October is "hurt your back month?? LOL! I was two weeks in lower back pain walking elderly after draging around and throwing 70 pound bags of potatoes from our garden. Perhaps being 63 years of age does not help, it never happened to me before. ANYHOW, lucky you, it did not happen during the growing season!
    4:30 In between roses infill with some old cottage garden perenials like delphiniums, lupines, foxgloves etc. I started all of those last summer from seeds for that purpose among my roses. One of the most lovely sights to see is the old quintessential cottage garden. 5:04 Not to worry, I leave my garden like that until new growth emerges because the old dead stems etc. show me where NOT to push in the spade destroying my "sky high" Oriental lilies etc. 5:30 True except for any of my old vintage roses that bloom on the previous years growth. Like the Albas, Moss roses, Albertine, Seven Sisters etc. You know this already, mainly I write it in case your followers have such roses, hack off last years growth, you shall have no roses on those types. A beautiful sight to see an old building buried unde a massive rose vine covered in bloom. Like the famous gardener Vita Sackville West wrote long ago that in her travels she encounterd an old cottage "In a delightful state of neglect." I love the look that she described. I personally would do nothing to your massive rose vine. I am actually jealous because here in Ohio that would never happen, the canes freeze back, so, I bury my roses under black , woven weed barrier during the coldest months of winter.
    11:21 Averts do not show up on my laptop PC, but they are maddeneningly frequent on my Android, I have not yet figured out why the difference. I love your narrow grassways and large bedding spaces. In my opinion, mowed grass is a waste, I want the 1920s look of narrow grassways meandering through large beds, at least that is the cottage look of the 1920s, the large royal estates always had large expanses of grass and were boring to see in my opinion.
    Good to hear from you after so long and all the best with your back. A high quality magnesium supplement helps some people becuase dietary sources of it are not plentiful and it helps the muscles to relax and prevent them going into spasm. Alas, it will not help with disc deformities, bone rubbing on bone or pinching nerves etc.
    Anyhow, enjoy my "short story" LOL! Emojis not functioning for some reason, an hour ago they did. Your garden is going to be splendid in a few months.

      Hi there Ralph hope your well and a lovely read as always. Yes I forgot to mention in the video planting close together on the varieties that are not amongst the healthiest can lead to some pain with the spread of black spot. But after last year black spot, it didn’t kill me or the roses. And ultimately if the weather isn’t ideal it’s can arrive anyway. Certainly that’s what I saw at DA hq. Many of the roses there had pretty heavy blackspot early in the year. Regarding the wall I still haven’t decided which rose I will be planting at the front but safe to say there will be at least one mountainous rose growing up the front/side of my house. The safe bet would be Wollerton old hall of course but I don’t know. Madame Alfred a great rose but won’t be room for both her and Paul’s Himalayan!
      Thanks for the heads up on the adverts that’s good to know I never considered that. On my wife’s iPhone she sees adverts so I think it may be a phone or tablet thing. Thanks for adding comment and I do hope your well.

      The third week of January was 2 days of headache, faded into leg weakness, faded away into a week of occasional coughing, no fever, no chills, a mild flu perhaps? The first time in 40 years for that. Back to normal now.Yes, A new growing season soon shall start, ample opportunity to discuss everything. Some of my roses are in enormous pots dragged into the 45 degree fahrenhait room for winter, all roses are in dormancy except for a few that are putting on considerable new growth they are Francois Rabbellait, Chlotilde Soupert and Eustacia Vye, they shall be blooming EARLY, which makes me happy.
      Best wishes to you for no back pain and a lovely growing season. The rose vines clambering up your house make a lovely dimension of verticality, not merely low and flat.@@Jay_Jay

    Oh so good to hear "Hello, lovely viewer!" So sorry about your back, that is a real bummer! I enjoy seeing how your garden looks in the "sleeping season" of winter. My rose garden did not happen last summer, for various reasons, but I think it will happen this fall. But as a result all my roses are in pots still, and we had 2 or 3 really cold spells, highs in the 20's, and then a terrible freezing rain on top of snow, resulting in 4-5 inches of solid ice everywhere. Very unusual for my location! I'm sure I've lost several roses, tho' I covered them & kept them close to the house. Since most of my roses are own-root, there's a chance they'll come back. We'll see. I have numerous roses on order coming in April, including 3 Brother Cadfael. I have a load of gigantic pots, which is where everyone will have to park for the time being. I'm thinking it might not be bad to pot roses their first year, then when you plant them they can stay in their familiar soil environment. It will be good to be gardening with all my favorite rose geek UA-cam channels again! But first I have to put away all the Christmas decorations...yeah, I'm a little behind!

      Hi there vintage lady. That’s sad your garden didn’t happen last year but I hope your roses survived what sounds like an atrocious winter. I had similar a couple of years ago. Snow, ice and then more snow ontop and because the roses hadn’t been pruned at that time, the weight of it all I lost several decent stems from Many roses. But thankfully they all recovered without issue. They can be very hardy. Yours being own root you should be ok. Brother Cadfael and 3 of them, I do like that rose. I hope they do well for you. Lovely to hear from you again and hope this year is better for you in the garden.

    Lovely to see your garden tour Jay Jay. Mine is wet, and the lawn is just a muddy mess at the moment. Nice to see GG doing well, I would plant her in the ground, she's a tough cookie. I think she'll be off once she gets her roots down in the soil. Really looking forward to seeing your garden in bloom, some nice additions there and that new driveway bed is going to be beautiful.Take care not to do too much in the garden at once it's hard work on your back. Hi there :) your garden will look awesome I’ve zero doubt :)
      GG, yes I’m worried about the Mrs or someone else walking on it with it being right in the centre there. At present that pot is full of garden earth other than the all important worms getting in it’s not too far removed from being in the real soil. But that’s my worry is someone inadvertently treading on it or dragging the extension lead across it when mowing.
      Yes I quit early today. The centre bed by the front door I done a few hours on that today and had to stop but I done a fair bit. Yeah I didn’t realise that about the adds I think they may just play on phones I don’t know. But your right yt will make it up.

    • @soulgirlktf
      @soulgirlktf 5 місяців тому +1

      @@Jay_Jay Yes good point about GG I hadn't thought of that. I think you're right to wait a while in that case or even keep her in a pot long term, a bottomless pot, the roots can get down but she'll be elevated out of harms way. Alternative is another position but have you got room !!! Same dilemma for all of us rose addicts haha Sounds like you've got a lot done today, that's enough for one day you did great. I'm just doing a bit at a time, this weeding, feeding mulching routine will take me a few weeks to get round the whole garden but there's plenty of time. Just do one section at a time when the weather's dry you'll get there.

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay  5 місяців тому

      @@soulgirlktf looking at yours Linda I think GG will be grow too big for a bottomless pot? kinda top heavy look perhaps. She will go in the ground there but I’d like a couple/few feet on her first ideally just because she’s in the centre of that area. At the moment she’s like 6” after cutting her back. Yes it takes time at our age sorting out the garden for spring. Next year I will start early. In previous years I was done by Christmas :)

      Hi there. Wow that sounds awful I do hope you’re recovering. Yes it can be frustrating when you just stand and look knowing so much needs to be done. I wish I could tell you I planned everything in my head in my downtime but truth be told I didn’t. Every day I changed my mind. So whilst your recoupering maybe pay it some thought so when you are back fighting fit you’ll hit the road running. But remember to take it easy at first. Today I managed only a few hours in the bed by my front door before I had to clear up. In years past I’d have tackled that in one day. So listen to your body when you start to get fit again. All the very best and thank you.

    I wanted recommend you the channel of johan scarman and his wife stephanie körner. Ist called "landhaus ettenbühl". Its in german but some are also in english and their advice on rose care and pruning is great! It think you should have kept the old wood of your rose bushes because its the engine of the plant. @Jay_Jay I hope so too. I'll look forward to watching your roses this year. I'm interested to know what you decided to do with wollerton old hall. It's another one I bought as a bare root last march and it grew fast for me. It marched right to the top of my arch and is a beautiful colour. I had no room for new roses but still managed to dig out a very small area near the arch for a blush noisette and a queen of sweden. I have never seen a large Queen of sweden In david austin gardens, so I thought I'd be safe planting it very close to blush noisette. I've since seen how big and tall it can get 🤣. All I can say is "May the best rose win" haha

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay  5 місяців тому +1

      @@davenadainton4209 that made me laugh. 😂😂 Wollerton old hall I still haven’t decided. I don’t think I’ve ever spent as much time considering what to do over one of 2 roses. Wollerton old hall done really well for me last year in its first year. It would definitely be the sensible perhaps wise choice to have it at the front of the house. But Madame Alfred… a great rose. But Paul’s Himalayan musk will have to go at some point if Madame gets planted. Difficult choice and one that keeps changing every 10 minutes. :)

I heard gardening is supposed to be enjoyable 🤔

  • @nikkonch
    @nikkonch 5 місяців тому +1

    I really enjoyed that Jay Jay. As you say, spacing is a critical issue for us average gardeners who haven't got that much area to plant our roses, and the temptation to cram them in is difficult to resist. I think my garden is possibly in a worse state than yours - my excuse is that the lawn has been squelching underfoot nearly every week over the past two months (clay soil). Pruning still makes me nervous, despite the fact I know that even if I hack a rose to pieces it will probably look just as good as if I agonise over every cut. I heard that at RHS Wisley they just take a hedge-trimmer or similar over their roses! Yes, I have 5 Ancient Mariners. I've mentioned before that I almost threw the first away when it performed so poorly in a pot, but in the ground (and in the sun) it flourished and the last two years was 6 foot or more. I planted 3 more under the edge of our raised decking, since their tall growth should let us see the flowers popping up over the decking. I also have one in the front garden. The tallest/oldest one has had a long gap between flushes, but the best flush is spectacular. The others, which are younger, seem to be producing flowers intermittently. I have a dozen or so new bare root roses I potted up in the greenhouse to be dug into a bed in 2-3 months - not DA roses, since I wanted to try different types and colours - and cheaper roses! Sweet Honey was a bargain after all, wasn't it? The greenhouse bare roots are enjoying the light and warmth of the sun, and I hope this is advancing their development. Unfortunately I am seeing greenfly too! I don't think I have ever seen any adverts on your videos - is it maybe the viewers who are targeted? I don't pay any extra subscription or anything.

      @Jay_Jay  5 місяців тому +1

      Hi nik. Yes the man with a wealth of expertise on ancient mariner!:) or mariners! You see mine I’ve put it in a sunny spot I hope it will do well there but that soil in that new bed is particularly clay ee. And a fair amount of rubble as you saw so will see. Yes planting to close I forgot to mention in the video varieties of weaker health can come back to haunt us. But after last years infestation of black spot even on my healthiest of roses we all survived at the end of the day. Yes I’m sure your roses in the green house will have a good head start again :) look forward to seeing your new varieties this year and where you end up planting them :)

All varieties were spot on, no mix ups or anything. Their DAs are only 1 yo and some of the newer German varieties are also only 1 yo plants, but the other ones tend to be 2yo plants - however all of them even the smallest ones grew perfectly, even Emma Hamilton which arrived as two tiny sticks was perfectly healthy and grew beautifully, despite being small. I'd say if you want a lot of roses it's totally worth it considering how cheap they are, if you need just a handful- I wouldn't bother, considering delivery is £27. They will send you a p*y p*l l*nk to pay once they ship so it's easy and secure and they arrive just a couple days after they send them. I know some people however had worse experience with them but not me. I know you're into Kordes and other Germans recently- tuincentrum variety selection is unmatched and you can have tens of roses for the cost of 5 roses purchased here in the UK so I think it's totally worth it🤷🏻‍♂️

      @vorong2ru very interesting to read about your experience with Tuincentrum Lottum because I have ordered 4 roses from them for the first time. They will be delivered in early March. I live in Amsterdam so it was not a difficult decision to use them. I wanted some roses which are harder to find. By the way, they are located in Lottum (eastern Netherlands, close to the German border). There is also a large rose park, breeder/seller called Rosarium Lottum in the same area. Good luck with your purchases!

    Nice to see back Jay Jay. I have watched every video of your rose collection, you posted in past 12 months, however, first time added comment. Your roses are beautiful and inspiring. I have several DA roses and few Kordes, Meilland, US roses in our garden here in Berkshire. Your experience of roses has been very helpful to many beginers like me. Thanks for sharing amazingly roses videos and your experience.

      Hi there and thank you. I’m a novice I think I’ll always consider myself a novice rose grower :) it sounds like you have a collection growing from some great rose breeders. Meilland is one I have started to collect more of just recently. Best of luck with your collection and thanks for dropping by and saying hello. Let’s hope that this coming season the weather will be kinder to us than last year.
      All the best

      Thank Jay Jay. In fact I added few Kordes roses ( summer romance, Bliss, Jasmina) after watching these in your videos, last year. Yesterday I added "Arctic blue" bare root ( American rose ) to my collection. Your roses experience and advice is always very useful to many rose growers. Many thanks, Raj

    Hi Jay! It’s good to see your garden in winter look, you still got a good spacing with your roses. If you have seen my video about Bad Kissingen rose garden some were just having a foot distance. Gute Besserung with your back, mine is my Knie. I‘ll definitely will buy Kordes sweet honey and David Austin Boscobel. Is the sweet Parfum de Provence aka Anniversary rose of Meilland?

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay  5 місяців тому +1

      Hi Gemma and thank you. Yes I saw your video on bad kissingen. I’ve seen it many times old established roses less than a foot apart grouped together and doing very well. I forgot to mention it can have a downside if they are not the healthiest of varieties but still very doable. I hope your knee gets better and the two roses you mentioned awesome verities. Yes sweet Parfuma de Provence is the anniversary rose. No doubt another one I got from your channel. :)

    How is your back doing now.
    I’ve got serious back problems but I try to keep myself busy.
    If you getting numb feeling you need to get it checked out in your legs or arms
    Or ask me if you like I’ve 2 back surgery’s and maybe if it goes to plan 2 more this year.

      Hi there. My back is fine now but Mia’s a little weak. Too Much work I feel my back start to warn me so I ease off. Stretching exercises helped my back massively. Resting it I felt pain. Thankfully I didn’t get numbness. I hope your back heals and thank you

      One has been removed and a cage put in.
      I just do a bit at a time stop and go again lol.

      Hi potager hope your well. Nikkonch he places his potted roses in his potting shed during the bitter winter months and his roses benefit from good early growth. I’m not an expert as you know but I did consider doing this with some of my roses this winter. In the end I didn’t. My thoughts this year were let them rest, sleep and toughen up for what I hope will be a hard working year come rose season. With regards to your rose I think it will be fine either way I wouldn’t worry.

    Hi Jay Jay, Loved the video. I can compare your pruning with my own. I have all told around 25 roses including 2X Mme Alfred Carriere roses. I, like you, have a UA-cam Channel - Peter Haymaker - or just hook on the 'P' and I think you'd love to see the climbing roses in particular. If you do have a look, which I hope you do, probably the June video would show you the most. If you'd like to see the roses now they're all pruned I could do a quick walk about and upload. Glad to hear you're active again. All very frustrating. Thanks again, P.
