David Austin do indeed use multiple rose plants in a single pot to achieve the 'full' look - especially for the photoshoots. Just be warned - after a couple of years (perhaps just one) you will need to lift and divide these plants because they will not thrive and eventually die with that little space. Depending on the size rose, you need a container of at least 45cm and possibly 60cm diameter and in depth to house a single rose bush happily for multiple years. If you have the patience, a cheaper way to do it is to buy a single rose. In three years it will have achieved its full size and you will not have three potentially dying plants on your hands :)
The arrival of bare root roses has to be one of the most exciting things ever! I find them so beautiful... it’s just the anticipation that bubbles up! That’s a rose and plant addict talking!! This was an exciting and helpful video. I get most of my DA or any bare roots from Victoria, Australia if I can’t find them in Sth Australia. How blessed are you to live in Shropshire though!!!
Everything looks so nice and warm where you are. Your garden is beautiful. Yesterday we were having snow flurries😥. We have planted some flowers, but we're having a cold spell here. I hope that they make it to the weekend, when it gets warmer.
That was fun watching you work. I'm so jealous of your garden. If you ever come to the US again, you might try to visit Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania.
This was a very professional video. I very much enjoyed watching it and hearing how to plant and care for the roses. You did a great job in this video. I hope to see more videos from you like this one. It was Excellent!!
Have been thinking about ordering Princess Alexandra of Kent for a while...after watching this I finally ordered her. Thanks for the inspiration Elliot
Today I saw my cutting sticking out of 4 ft of snow. This year I was gifted for Christmas with a David Austin yellow/peach climber. I had a climber last year for at random (not a DA), so I’ll see how this brand works out. I never knew they put in 3 bushes. Most of my roses are my Grandmothers from the early 50’s/60s.
Great video and lots of very good advice, last year I planted a number of David Austin roses in large pots, my only disappointment was most of the flower heads bent over, so I need to find out what to do. Also never knew you could grow three roses in one pot.
I am watching this in 2023 want updates these are a stunning group I just ordered lady of shallot and (bc I'm extra af) I got some floribundas (scentimental) super excited
Loved this video. I am wanting to try some potted roses here on the island, where they can do quite well. Something positive and not about COVID. Thanks!
Hello Elliot. I have two DA roses in my yard and one, Golden Celebration, is in a pot. Thanks for sharing the secret of more than one root in a pot! What size pot did you use (cm size)? Thank you!
love learning about David Austin Roses....love your excitement, and spunk. Do you know if there is a Rose Identify APP - that would help us identify which rose we have - I have lost my tags, and really want to identify my Beautiful David Austin Pink Climbing roses I planted several years ago.....they are so very beautiful and strong bloomers.......thank you - please post the LINK if there is an APP currently created to identify Plants... thank you so much. Gardening in Zone 4 - Central Canada.
Wrong time of year right now for an update as everything just coming into bud. Will be moving them to our new house soon and probably planting in the ground to form a rose garden. I’ll make a video on that in due course. I did show them last year in my various weekly vlogs when walking around the garden. 😄
@@ElliotNMatt Yes I saw those! Thank you so much. I bought 2 roses and will be planting them in a container because of your recommendation. Keep up the good work!
Have 2 climbing D.A. roses on their way but hoping to put them in pots- or rather very, very large planters. Has anyone tried this? Have plenty of sun, just terrible soil (clay and rock) and not much space. Now that I see this I wonder if the planter i have is too large to have only one rose in each (though it looks like these are the smaller container varieties). Pot is 61cm/24in in length and width and a bit over 53cm/21in in height
Hello Thank you for a great video! Can I ask whether these three roses can remain in this pot forever? of will they need transplanting out at some point? Also do you top dress the pots with anything?
Hi, it prob would be best to switch out the compost every 4 years or so. However I don’t plan too. As d as n experiment I’m going to just continue weekly liquid feeding during growing season and see how they do. This year will be the second year for the three in a pot.
I have planted in early November , 7 bare root DA roses into individual 52 wide 58 cm high pots. Hence I expect them to thrive for at least 10 years , maybe slow but sure. If I had to plant 3 roses in one pot, I assume they have to be replanted individually in about 2 or 3 years otherwise the roots will get too crowded. I would therefore never plant 3 developed roses together in just one pot. The first bloom might be beautiful and they by 3rd year they’ll will get stagnant. Just my opinion .
I did this after watching this video, and if anyone else is in the same boat. I would not recommend doing it, there’s not enough air circulation for the roses to thrive. I have just taken them out to put into the ground after only 1 year (2 summers) Plant 1 in each 45cm container. The only way it would work for al 3 is if your container is like 90cm in diameter and where the hell would you even fit that? 😬 Patience for the full effect people! Otherwise you’ve wasted almost £100 on 3 roses that end up dying!
Mine were fine and did reach the desired size. I would recommend regular feeding during the growing season. Weekly if possible plus I’d recommend hard pruning annually and changing the compost completely every third year. Yes you need a decent sized pot! I did make a separate video about pot size.
Yes this video was made to show how to plant them. I update regularly on the garden in my weekly vlog. Last season both pots grew and flowered! I’ll make a new video just on the roses when they are in bloom this season,
You can't buy those exact things anymore. They are prob 40 plus years. I'm not sure they are even actual plant stands. I just thought they would be perfect to put pots on.
@@ejdacanay eventually one or two will die or all of them will die. It’s never recommended to plant more than 1 roses in a pot. That a serious mistake.
ahh I had no idea they used 3 roses. This my first foray into roses. I just pre-ordered (US) Roald Dahl with plans for potting. Now I am thinking I might buy at least one more! Do you know how many litres or gallons your containers were? I'm actually thinking of using grow bags (15-20 gallons or 57 - 76 litres). Do you have any updates on the roses now that summer is over? Did they flower at all?
Depends what zone you are in. In some climes it can be detrimental to bury the graft site as it can sit in water if lots of rain. In others it’s best to bury them completely to protect against prolonged snow periods. I’ve never lost a rose planting them this way here in U.K. in fact all of mine thrive. I also tend to leave room for some light grit to go over the top which does cover the graft and allows for good drainage.
@@ElliotNMatt Thanks so much for the explanation. I was wondering why you’d decided not to bury the grafts, and whether I should dig mine out and do the same! But snow is an issue here, and now I finally understand why the conflicting graft advice is out there. :)Thanks again.

Love David Austen roses. My mother used to grow them i am going to do what you did exactly and give it ago. Mum will enjoy them.

Most of my David Austin roses dont survive but it may be because of the heat in southeastern Spain

You plant them in straight compost ? Thanks😊😊 USA
Yes rose and shrub compost is best
I've bought two potted roses from DA. I've gone for author names...Roald Dahl and Emily Bronte. Potted them today!
They should be great!
Hello sir...I'm glad as you are my friend now...
Hello Elliot. Hope all is well with you and Matt.
I would love to see a close up of those gorgeous pots like the one Princess Anne Is in....
Hi Elliot what a beautiful garden can I just ask what are your rosé sat in to keep well drained Thankyou
Any updates on planting them 3 to a pot?? Did you end up liking it more? & what gallon pot would you suggest for going 3 to a pot? Thanks! 💙💙
Seguro que no hay actualización porque están muy feos,es normal, plantar tres rosales de esa variedad en una sola maceta es un grave error.
Hi Elliott, thanks for the informative video. Can I ask, please - what size pot did you plant the roses in?

What is the size of the pot are you using for the 3 bare roots? How wide and how deep?
god bless you more
Did you bury the crowns or not? Why or why not? Thank you.

Thank you
Hi, great video, had no idea that you could do that!! What size pot is that (measurements if possible, litres means nothing to me 😂😂) thanks
Thanks!
The pot looks small even for one rose. How do three make it there?
Our here come in exquisite boxes. Thank you for this !! X
Because Potted roses come in boxes and bare root come in bags.

Can I ask what size pots you used fir the three rose bushes? I have just bought Buscobell snd I want the same effect xx
hey Elliot, great video, how big were the terracotta pots?

The trouble is by planting more than ONE rose per pot you void the David Austin 5 year guarantee.
Dang he’s packing 😊

Meu Deus, como eu vim parar aqui??
3 in a pot seems excessive when one gets so large.
If I plan only one David austin rose per-pot/planter. How big is the pot should be at least?
