So explain to me, how the Rasp Pi 4A I mean 5 is better than the orange Pi 5+? Or how the Rasp Pi 4B is better than the orange Pi 3B? Or how the Rasp Pi is better than the OpiZ2W & 3? Esp that last one were the cheapest 18$ model Z2W is 18$ CAD & has a quad 1.5Ghz cpu? Also let's just mention.... Idk RADXA. Radxa Zero, Zero 2, Zero 3, esp Zero 2 Pro with 8GB of ram (also OpiZ2W has up to 4GB ddr5 for 33$ CAD) BUT what I care about the most is the Rock5b the Opi5+ or 5B or 5. But I'm gonna talk about 5+. Up to 32GB ram dual channel. 2280 m key PCI for NVME gen 3, 256GB EMMC, faster SD speeds. RTC input, speaker input. 2 USB 3.0 + a 3.0 type C that's also DP1.4, 2 FULL SIZE HDMI put 8k 60, 1 HDMI in 4k 60. 2 RJ45, WIFI 6, BT NEWEST 5.2? Which is optional since it uses PCI e key and adapters exist. This could be GSM or another NVME, 8 cores. It's 4 eff cores are same as entire Rpi,4B and it's other 4 same as Rpi5..... It would take both a Rpi4B and 4A I mean 5 to even get close to these specs. 2 USB 2. 40 GPIO. Over a dozen or two OS available. And best part all that without a f ING hat or attachment. Sure Rpi5 has PCI as a pinout you need to pay to have it be useful. It's SD speeds are Slower. No EMMC. Single chip ram so could be DDR5 would stil be slower. No NEON no npu at 6 TOPS, it's just a 4 with a new meh cpu slightly faster SD which the rest of us have left behind. It's performance is meh. It's price is meh. It was severely outdated on announcement. It's crap..your a bootlicking brown noser. Your opinion sucks. You come off like an asshole. You deserve bad things for being such an overly judgemental unstable reviewer. Pay more money for garbage. Nobodies stopping you. But for the price of a 5 I'll snag a 3B orange Pi, slap a NVME on it. Slap some NVME on it. Toss that dumb SD away. Use Rpi3 cases cause let's not waste.
The ONLY good thing to come from the Rpi5 was 5v5a psu. Despite the literally superior in every actual real tangible metric, the Pi 5 family only needs 4a. But I want a 5a just cause I'm going to attach a Mipi DSI touch screen. Oh and it's got headphone jack which doubles as AV out so that's what like 5 displays and we haven't even talked GPIO out. And it's GPU MOPS the floor with the rest. So you babbling like a tantrum child made me rant. And the Opi5+ isn't the only one, rockpi5b nano Pi t6 and a few more. But the thing Opi's have they don't. 32GB ram. Rockpi's max is 24.

RPi was NOT supposed to be a "hobbyist board".
The original RPi was envisioned as a cheap computer that you can connect to a TV and a keyboard and use it as a prop to teach and learn computer technology, programming, electronics and have fun in a very accessible way. The idea was based on the way Commodore 64 was used back in the day, a computer that inspired many current engineers when they were boys, including the creators of RPi.
Hobbyist were covered at that time by Arduino boards. They still are covered by Arduino and other cheaper boards. You don't need a $50 linux computer to blink leds and read buttons.

On what goddamn earth is this not describing a typical hobby type activity? This is revisionism of the highest degree. I suppose Commodore 64s weren't for hobbiests either, purely for teaching and learning only, or A grade industrial use.

    • @VolkerHett
      @VolkerHett 11 місяців тому

The RPi was not (only) created to blink some LEDs. SDR is one way of using a Pi, a satellite tracker is another or a radio repeater. Older IEEE-488 (HPIB) instruments can be used with a RPi, like the ancient but still very precise HP lab voltmeters and so on.

I don't like the lack of a headphone jack. Other than that I think they did good. What they should do... is take one of these wanna be Raspberry Pi companies and license them to produce Pis for them. In turn the partnership could benefit whatever product that company already sells. Maybe they could produce more than one model that has a better processor, or better graphics hardware, or a model with a headphone jack. I'll probably be getting at least 2 Pi5s at retail price when available. One nice thing is the Pi4 can still be a good choice.

To me power consumption to power required is a big thing for me, something you didn't mention much. A server running 24/7 that doesn't need high performance will probably use less power on a raspberry pi than just the fan on a old intel Mac and probably make only a few milliseconds difference in response times for some applications. This power difference will impact lifetime cost, heat, noise, climate change, etc. It may not be a huge difference but it can add up.

My theory for them pre announcing the pi 5 (they normally don't) is that they're having to transfer manufacturing from the pi 4 to 5. So production of pi 4s is going to go down, but not because of chip shortages.
In prior cycles they could build up a stock of the old model to get them over the hump, but due the chip shortages they haven't been able to do that, so pre announcement is a good way of cutting demand for the pi 4.

Calls people noobs for their lack of knowledge on correct board usage.
Uses a raspberry pi 4 for a camera, a few sensors and a 2 motor drivers.
All that extra processing power, wasted.
    All that extra power usage.
That huge size footprint (compared to zero/3a).
    The extra price cost.

He is missing the whole point. The Pi has a lot of blobs and non-standard proprietary stuff. The kernel is created by the Pi foundation. The firmware is proprietary. None of this helps upstream kernel development on Arm because they have nothing to contribute to the mainline kernel because of compatibility reasons. It doesn't run Debian because it can't run debian. They benefit from Debian but contribute nothing to Debian. The CPU is 16nm in 2023. The dual 4K video is for desktop users not for IoT or industrial controls. Its not a low power device you can run on battery. Its also not cheap. The Pi only looks good if you have no idea what you are doing.

The RPI 5 is not designed for small battery powered IOT. They have other versions like the Zero or pico for that solution and if you’re using an RPI 5 for industrial control I question your sanity.

I am thinking of the Pi-5 as a desktop / entertainment center PC. Most of my video is off UA-cam or Amazon. They limit rented videos to SD on linux, as far as I know. My situation requires a very well cooled machine, because I do not have AC. My video requirements are rather low two 1080-ish screens at best. (1920x1200 for the win! ) The Pi 4 runs ok as a desktop for me, but a Pi 5 will handle the video side better. Mx Linux for the Pi is great, fo the 4 or 8 GB ram versions. I found the Thorium fork of Chromium to work well on the Pi 4. The Pi is dead the same way COBOL is dead. For what it does there ain't much better. BTW a Pi can emulate DOS PCs or old Mainframes very well. Good Luck!

My experience with the Jetson Nano is that its way way too proprietary. I been stuck with their distro for a long time. There is some Armbian support now but was still iffy last I checked. One time it fried a TF card. Dunno if it was the Jetson's fault or a USB harddrive I had plugged into it. I did try to do AI stuff with it but I couldn't get their stuff to compile. Pi 4 8gb with Ubuntu Server and OpenMediaVault over WIFI as NAS
TinkerBoard with NEMs Linux to monitor the constant addition of new SBCs that are doing certain roles all over this little Pi Powered WIFI OpenWRT network
The Workstation I use to administer this is a Raspberry Pi 400 dual screens with Ubuntu 22.04
I’m right now popping in an Odroid XU4 in the network as a Kali Linux box to remote/ssh into and gain knowledge of doing proactive network testing
I find fan buying over a certain SBC is not necessary lol.

I also have Jetson Nano boards and tinker with AI and AR and I have a Intel Realsense Camera and Intel Neural Compute Stick
    So whatever works
As long as it ties into my DIY OpenWRT Pi Router Network. I just keep them segmented off from my main network
Also have a NUC to, 7th Gen. I run Windows Server 2016 on it. Share some files with it. And the OpenMediaVault is my Media Storage.
