Lester goes through quite the character growth throughout his adventure, going from a wimp who runs in terror at the sight of crabs and turtles to being able to sword fight dozens of pirates all by himself. It actually quite inspiring.
Lester the Unlikely is basically a white Steve Urkel. If that sounds good to you, get ready to have fun flailing at sea turtles! But in all fairness, it's a pretty good game, no matter how cringey the hero might be.
Unlikeable though he may be, Lester never does anything morally reprehensible and stays civil with the Chief's daughter despite wondering what Alligator Gal looks like after molting her scales. Once he hears who else resents the pirates that scuttled his vessel, Lester starts to "MAN UP". Also, Lester's character taunted comic geeks in the nineties, but the lessons we avoided by dissociating ourselves from the character cropped right back up in modern day. Remember: James had just reviewed Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde in full and his outlook skewed even darker. Under a brighter mood, he might have given this game either a pass or the courtesy of playing it through. However, he underwent a dark phase that did not end until he confronted ROB at the fifth season's final episode. I rented this game once. You could get around, but the painstaking efforts needed dissuaded me from purchasing it.
A pretty cool, solid adventure with a charmingly ridiculous story! I just love how Lester goes from being a nerdy coward to defeating pirates with a freaking boomerang and sword by the end. It has alot of nice small details for a 16bit game back then, like how Lester first encounter of an enemy made him run and then in mid part of the game, he start to act brave with his chest puffed up. A bit shame that this game later on got shit on due to a certain "Angry reviewer" that other then follow suit without even playing it themselves.
To be fair, James does say in Cinemassacre's FAQ page, "Remember this is for comedy. Sure my gripes with the games stem from truth, but they are exaggerated. The whole point is to play bad. If you want to see somebody play good, go watch a speed run. If you take my reviews seriously, you are missing the whole point. Think for yourself. I may actually like some of the games I’m complaining about. I only focus on the negative."

(the Nerd holds up the "Lester the Unlikely" 5 bag and poop is dripping down to the floor. The Nerd holds his nose in revolt.) And there's a new one comin' on the PS4, using the latest state-of-the-art technology (the Nerd holds up the CD) of constructing the disc out of orangutan diarrhea. Just turned out that was the only way, and it really gives Blu-ray a run for its money.
The funny thing is, _Far Cry 3_ takes this game's idea and makes something incredible with it. Oddworld also did a lot of things better than this one, and together with _Blackthorne_ and _Lester the Unlikely_ they have grid-based cinematic platforming.

it's a shame this game is pretty misunderstood, the controls can be a bit difficult but nothing that breaks the game and Lester ends up fairly badass.

Agreed. I went into it not expecting too much and coming away pretty pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed it.

Game is really interesting, you didnt really see much of character in platform game slowly evolving as game went on.
I played this one late last year. It was alright. Clunky as hell, but I found some enjoyment in the game
