    Partial water changes, plants and allowing some of the beneficial stuff to change. I have never done 100% water changes. Just something I have always done. Shrug* I am so happy that this has worked out for you

    These bettas are so beautiful. I have a red female veil tail named Wanda, got her for five bucks at petsmart. She is so beautiful to me, but she is a very common color. ❤️🥰 love her all the same!

    Java moss is great at absorbing fish waste. I had a 10 gallon I was using to grow out 4 baby lake Malawi cichlids and it had a giant ball of Java moss in the middle of the tank they’d swim around and through. My water parameters were always perfect and the PH never dropped below 7.8. I never had to do water changes for that tank, just harvest Java moss. All I had for filtration was a whisper J hang on back. This was years ago before tetra bought whisper.

      They were in there, without needing a water change, well into adulthood and actually started to breed.

    I use jars that same size and they are fine even long term if you set them up with plants like you are doing. I even use a very small sponge filter in some of my jars of that same size. Also since it looks like you are using almond leaves that will prolong the time between water changes. I also keep a large 50 plus gallon tank where I keep all my water for water changes. I set the water parameters etc.. in the stock tank so all I need to do is syphon out the wastes and replace the water using the stock tank. After doing this for awhile I really think using large tanks are over rated. I think many keepers feel this way but are afraid to say it out of fear of being attacked on social media. I use a really small Betta display tank with clear water when I want to photograph them. And then return them to their dark water after filming.

      I do the same thing with my grow out containers. Mine are 1.5 gallon containers with a mini sponge filter and floating plants. I do use a turkey baster to remove the betta "bombs" (💩) everyday. They cycled pretty easily and I only need to water change every two weeks. Glad to see someone else doing sponge filters in containers. 😊🐟🌱

      @@cyndicombs1419 I use a baster as well.
      I found a smaller baster that works so much better than the standard size basters.

    Excellent! A small piece of lava rock or a few pieces of bio type filter media would also be enough to host beneficial bacteria to help keep jars cycled, but would still allow for easy cleaning and maintenance. 😊

    The jars are great! I love the way the different colors of cardstock look behind and between the jars. Maybe when you get more jars try to jot down what you do with them. If they cycle, and the next group cycles you may be able to identify how it happens.
    Love to you and Littlefoot. I have a kitty (my late daughter’s little girl) who is 13 and dealing with a nasal cavity tumor. I’m doing “hospice” care. All we can do is love them and make things as easy as possible for them. I can tell how much you love animals. I’m sorry you and Littlefoot are going through this.

    Maybe the plants helped with cycling, because it gave a surface for bacteria to grow on and naturally helps reduce ammonia??

    • @CreativePetKeeping
      @CreativePetKeeping  2 роки тому +1

      I think that the plants played a big part in stabilizing and cycling the jars for sure.

  • @fioregiallo
    @fioregiallo 3 роки тому

    Once the Bettas go to their new home, you could try putting a ramshorn snail in each jar to keep the cycle going. Not sure if it will actually work but worth a try lol

    • @CreativePetKeeping
      @CreativePetKeeping  3 роки тому +1

      That is an interesting idea but I think I will put the jars away and take a break. I always seem to take short breaks in between betta spawns to look back on what I did ...see if there is something I can learn..and plan for the next spawn. I would like to continue to keep the cycyles going in the jars but I would be too lazy to keep up with the waterchanges if there was just a ramshorn in there.

    I can’t explain it, but I work at a fish store and tested our water after not doing a water change for 3-4 days on our betta cups (about 2-3x petsmart cups). The parameters came up similar to a cycled tank, despite us using 100% clean water, no nitrates in our tap or the RO system. (We mix RO and tap, our Ph is 8.3 out of the tap)
