  • Facing west to Auckland’s inner harbour this family home is composed within overlapping triangular forms that reach down a narrow site to the beach below.
Constructed from concrete it has been conceived as an organic sandcastle shaped by contextual forces, a stretched sculpted form derived from and by the materials/forces of its environment.
Shelter is defined by the protective southwest buttress while connection to the harbour is amplified through composed view shafts and soaring blades.
An object of shifting place and timeless change, the elements heightened, their effects cast in-situ and celebrated.

Such a beautiful home, it’s actually amazing that with all the concert and wood it does not feel cold, I love the use of one or two materials that really make it feel grand and simple but luxurious at the same time...definitely one of my favourite I have seen on this channel

I watched this build in another show , all i can say is that he has an incredible strength and understanding of design and spaces, so many architects and owners just want one big white box, this shows how much people don't know how to make a space have a feel. People are more interested in making homes show off. Yes just my opinion but i see this every day. Beautiful job.

Reminds me of an under ground parking garage. Disappointed in the dark gray to black interiors, sorta cave-like with no stalactites or stalagmites. The chandeliers look totally out of place and context with the modern style of the building. From the exterior view, with the oriented framing of views through the large glass panels, the building looks quite good. I do like the vertical light gray concrete with the wood patterning from the concrete forms or shuttering.

    • @rossbannan6138

Hi Rimantas, We used a highly flowable and dense concrete so the exterior is extremely waterproof even without any sealer. The insulation within the outer concrete works to create an extremely warm home. Thermal massing of areas creates this and makes the house perform better than any other type. A lot of time was spent on creating the cantilever over the manacle and I wanted to eliminate the post also but this proved to be not possible. The build required a lot of planning to optimise the use of the small crane I had and also how each wall finished at the top so all fitted into the roof build without any issue. The Finn walls have a weatherboard patten but we could not use standard w/b as these have a small cavity behind them. If I was to pour against these then these cavities would cup.
There's a few areas which hopefully help out. Glad you took the time to view.
      Ross

If I were instructing an architect on how I wanted my house designed, I would tell him that ALL THE WINDOWS MUST BE EASY TO CLEAN. That would eliminate skylights. It would eliminate any window that could not be cleaned (indoors or out) by means of a fairly short ladder; in fact, on the exterior, windows not easily reached from the ground should have a balcony/porch (or perhaps an engawa) on which the window-washer can stand. High windows under very high ceilings are a foolish choice. Asked by a friend for a bid on her house, a window-washer told her, "You couldn't afford it. I would have to rent scaffolding to reach the high windows; the labor required for erecting, climbing, and dismantling the scaffolding would cost you way too much."
