45 years ago today, 10 March 1977, I went to my very first concert, ABBA! They played this song and a bunch of others and it was totally awesome. I had seats at the very back, but soon realised I could go stand down the front and thats what I ended up doing. A brilliant show where they totally rocked. The next day my father took me to meet them at their hotel. That may sound like insider stuff, but no, ABBA were so INSANELY popular in Australia at that time that their every movement was in the papers, on radio and TV. They were everywhere. Anyway, I went to that hotel and got to meet them all, got my program and Arrival album signed (by all 4) and I still have them. I even kissed Frida on the cheek! I was one very happy boy that day. Still am, 45 years later!! Love your reactions Tyler and Marissa, so glad to see you appreciate the music that I have loved all these years :) All the best from Perth Australia
10 weeks at number 1 in Australia !!! It's the definition of a catchy song. I remember I was in grade 6 when it came out & I went into a record shop & the owner was giving his thumbs up to the album this came from to another grown up customer & I had already bought the cassette of this album (ABBA the self titled album) so to me I already knew their music had got me & the 'grown ups' were only confirming what I already knew.l continued to buy all the albums (& a few select singles) as they came out & I'm so glad I got on that ride so long ago & took them seriously through all the highs and lows - Voyage was like an old friend you hadn't seen in years dropping in for chin wag (Australian for friendly chat)
Guys, I’m from Sweden so obviously I love all your Abba reactions! Still waiting for you to react to my favorite though - Lay All Your Love On Me. That song IS perfection to me… awesome and witty lyrics and the best dance beat. Was released on their equally awesome Super Trouper album in 1980. You need to hear it!! 🙏☺️
I feel like this was the moment they started finding the "ABBA-sound", the sound that made them unique and immediately recognizable. This song makes me so happy, and I love the girls outfits! They're the best, I'm such a proud Swede. I love your reactions! Please do Lay All Your Love On Me, I've been waiting for so long!
About the costumes, arising from a Swedish tax law regarding costumes, ABBA's stage clothes were outlandishly-designed on purpose… According to the law, as long as the outfits were too impractical for everyday wear and couldn't be worn outside a performance, they were tax-deductible!
They actually fought a tax case for over a decade regarding whether the costumes actually *were* too outlandish for everyday wear. Yeah, the seventies were like that.
@@joekahno Taxes were crazy in the 1970s Sweden, for sure. Economical politics and retorics in general drove companies out of Sweden. But Abba (or Polar Music) were not exactly poor, even in the beginning of their career. So I doubt that story...🙂
It's still the same here in the UK with HMRC. I'm a performer and I've always been able to claim tax deductible expenses for _costumes,_ but not something I might also wear in everyday life. It's been like this for decades. Nothing says that they have to be *_outrageous_* though! 😂 *Deductible:* Period costume for a Victorian play, something set in the 50s. Dr Who, or The Future, wigs, stage make-up, panto costumes...** *Non-deductible:* Jeans and white T-shirt, that nice Hermès bag you've had your eye on. Unless you can claim you'd otherwise never buy such clothes, nor wear them off-stage/set. **I may have shoehorned the occasional item in the past, M'Lud... 😳👜🛼
Benny (keyboards) has said this song was the first time they’d mastered the arrangement of a song. Every instrument, every note, has a purpose. Nothing is just ‘strumming along’ adding color. If you listen with this in mind you’ll discover a whole other level of awesomeness with this song.
One of the reasons they weren't as popular in the US as they were internationally was they only did one tour in the US in 1979. It was part of an international tour. I also think that their music at the time was very different from what Americans were used to. It was only later that they were recognized as great songwriters, musicians. and just how great the gals voices were.
Another "epitome of pure pop music.Nothing to change or even dare to touch" as my cousin Christiano said.Cstumes were super trndy for it's time btw (1975 glam rock era).
Mama Mia was a worldwide hit. You guys really need to hear/see them sing “The way old friends do” (live at Wembley). It came out so good that they included it (as a live track) on their next album. Thanks 🙏🏻 EDIT. Benny plays accordion 🪗 🙂 Link in the reply.
That was a heartwarming encore to their final tour, standing all 4 in front of their fans almost huging each other singing this anthem to friendship and forgiveness.
ABBA weren’t going to release this as a single until the video clip was played on TV in Australia and they were put under pressure from their Australian record label
This was their biggest selling single here in the UK. It was at no.2 for 3-4 weeks (only held off the no.1 by Queens - Bohemien Rapsody. It then eventually knocked Queen off the top spot and then spent a further 3-4 weeks at no.1.
Imagine they refused to release it as a single until RCA finally convinced them due to huge public demand.Cause when its promo was aired in Aussie tv, people went mad, rushed in the stores asking for it.And when released blasted to no1 for 10 weeks before other countries followed.
Love it - Love it - Love it - thanks for bringing this one :) !! May I ask you to react to "ABBA - Waterloo ( Eurovision Song Contest 1974 ) - the moment when their career started
It's a fun song, catchy in so many aspects with that fun injection everywhere. ABBA were really innovators and one of the first around to do music videos as you see here also. You'll like "Under Attack" by ABBA for one of their later pieces. Lay your love on me by ABBA if you're really feeling like an utter dance track gem that you really feel in your bones
Also for the first time in 40 years, they have new music from their VOYAGE album, with the standouts, 'I Still Believe in You' and 'Don't Shut Me Down'
There were so many ABBA songs - like Mamma Mia - which were huge outside the US, but not in the US. So glad that you are discovering them now. Love your reactions, by the way.
You have some really big ones left: - Thank you for the music - I have a dream - Lay all your love on me - Happy new year - Ring ring And so many more... i can't even 😭
Waterloo,Take a chance on me,That's me,Move on,Voulez vouz,Kisses of fire,If it wasn;t for the nights,On and on and on,Summernight City(full "intro" version) e.t.c. just to add a few more...
This was the song that launched ABBA to superstardom in Australia and throughout the world in 1975… followed closely by so many great hits culminating in Fernando in 1976. Mamma Mia features in the Aussie classic comedy movie, Muriel’s Wedding in 1992, which - along with The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert - launched the worldwide ABBA revival in the ‘90s.
I do, I do, I do, I do, I do, was the group first number one on the Australian chart, including SOS, however, when Mamma Mia was released in Australia, it topped the chart for Ten Weeks. Yea, you are right right saying it their big hit in Australia but it wasn't the first No. 1.
@@mobychima1087 Yes, that’s true. I was tempted to name them all. SOS was a big favourite of mine when I was five years old. But it was Mamma Mia, and it’s video clip, that most people remember from Countdown (Australia’s No. 1 pop music tv show on every Sunday night throughout the 70s and most of the 80s.) The singles were released in a batch with their ground breaking video clips. Mamma Mia was the first to be aired on TV, but it took longer to get to the top of the charts here. In 1975 and 1976, I doubt there was a week without one or two or three ABBA singles in the Top Ten. Fernando broke records for weeks in the No. 1 position (poor John Paul Young had to wait), and it was in the Top Ten for almost my entire first year of school. I remember while at uni in Newcastle in 1988, a local radio station held a survey for the most popular single of all time with the local audience. Fernando was voted No. 1 - and by this stage John Paul Young was a radio announcer with the local radio station. ‘Love is in the Air’ and ‘Yesterday’s Hero’ were relegated by Fernando yet again, 12 years later…. and just like he did on Countdown all those years before, JPY had to announce it.
firsts #1 of ABBA in Australia I do I do I do I do I do (3 weeks) follow inmediatly by Mamma Mia (10 weeks) follow inmediatly by S.O.S. (1 week) ABBA was 14 weeks at #1 with three singles consecutives in row much later Fernando (14 weeks!) Dancing Queen Money money money Knowing me knowing you
Wooh awesome thanks for share Tyler and Marissa, I listened this song in my memories that I tried to remember for the first time when I was child maybe (3years old) but my mom said me that before I born she listened ABBA wirh her vinyl disc so I don't exactly when this contagious rhythm etched in my musical memory, I was born in 1989.
Now with more time for listen again and see with calm the reactions, for me Mamma Mia, Take a Chance On Me, Knowing Me Knowing You, Dancing Queen, Under Attack, Chiquita, The Name of the Game, Tiger, Money Money Money, Why Did it Have to Be Me, Waterloo, Fernando and Super Trouper are the best songs of ABBA because the deep feelings making and recordings with the soul at same time with the instruments is amazing! Epic! wonderfull for the life. Thanks again Marissa and Tyler for share and make again the people happy.
I am really enjoying your ABBA reaction videos. After ABBA had split up, Benny and Bjorn wrote the music for a musical called "CHESS". There is a song from this I think you would like. It is called "I know him so well". It is a duet and the best version is sung by Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson.
The only two songs I remember from Abba as being big hits in the US were 'Dancing Queen' and 'Take A Chance On Me.' I find it hard to believe as well because I think their music is awesome!
LOVE your reactions and so glad a younger generation appreciates them. It is incomprehensible that so many of their hits (28 of them!) went unnoticed in the US! They were a global force and one of the most successful bands ever. If you haven't already, check 'Gimme Gimme Gimme''The Winner Takes it All 'Voulez-Vous' and 'Does Your Mother Know That You're Out"
Another genius song from ABBA. What more is there to say. I’m gonna keep asking and keep asking for you to react to I’ve Been Waiting For You. It’s my favourite ABBA song and I think you will love it too 🙂
The clothes they wore were designed for every song they made. This so they wouldn't get taxed as they were for work. They have said that some of them were tight and uncomfortable but the clothes did get them noticed. You could never forget that look.
How i love to watch younger people hearing this older music for the first time. I was born in 1975 and really got in to the music from the 80s as i was growing up two of the first bands i can remember were ABBA and the Village People and i loved their music and still do today and I'm not much of a fan of newer stuff. Hip Hop and Rap really turned me off so i started listening to the older music going all the way back to the 40s and the time of the big band. Today my favorite decade for music is the 1960s there was such progression right from 1959 to 1970 i can't help but to think so fondly of the music from that time.
And no, this was not popular here in the U.S....#32 on the Billboard charts. I heard it once on the radio back in '79 after I got friendly with a DJ at a Trenton NJ station. He was kind enough to play it for me. I always enjoy your ABBA reactions...keep them coming!
@German Morawski None of their songs fit onto U.S. radio. back then. I'm still surprised they had 4 Top 10 songs here. Never played much on the radio where I lived. I'm old...I remember.
Another thing today's listeners miss is that ABBA was pre-MTV. Many of their music videos were made as demo's for the purpose of trying to book concerts. There was no market for music videos when they started making them, they were basically song length advertising. If you look at video of other groups performing at that time, what's available is almost exclusively shot at live performances.
Great stuff, 27 ABBA reactions and you're only part way thru their huge catalogue of hits. As far as the costumes go you haven't really seen their most iconic outfits yet apart from Mamma Mia. You need to see their cat dresses Tyler. For instance, the 'ABBA - Waterloo Live 1975' vid also the 'if it wasn't for the nights (Japan 1978 original broadcast)' vid for the kimono costumes. Meanwhile, some other suggestions to keep you going... I am the city, voulez vous, on and on and on, summer night city, tiger, ring ring, the piper, as good as new, tropical loveland, one of us, move on, happy new year, honey honey, thank you for the music, chiquitita(Spanish), when I kissed the teacher. Keep 'em coming👍
I love these styles so cute and believe then we wore some great outfits that were flirty but not vulgar, notice how they stand there and sing showing real talent they dont have to get vulgar they show hows it done when you have real talent
I just discovered your channel, more specifically your ELO and ABBA reactions. I did see one comment from someone in Europe saying they wondered why ABBA weren't more popular in the US. I don't know what makes him/her think they Weren't big here. They were one of the top selling pop acts in the US throught the 70's and into the early 80's with numerous Top 40 hits. This song was one of them, peaking at number 32 on the Billbaord Hot 100. I guess they are referring to the fact that it went to number 1 in a number of European countries and Dancing Queen was their only US number 1. Still, that a pop act like ABBA was able to do as well as they did here during the rock driven 70's was a testament to just how good they were.
You need to do When I kissed the teacher, with video, it’s really fun and playful. And also If it wasn’t for the nights (performance from Tokio) and Hasta Manana.
ABBA were huge internationally - nine no 1 songs in the U.K. alone. They were popular in the US but not as much as in places like Europe and Australia. Dancing Queen was - incredibly - their only US no 1 single.
@@alexioverdo5225 I didn’t know that. Just shows you that chart positions are just that - they don’t give you the full story of the success of a single or album
I like that you two are in your car - like it's forbidden in your town to listen to ABBA - kind of "ike the movie "Footloose". Do some of ABBAs Spanish songs!
I Think "mamma mia" became the most well known song, after the film. But then they were not singing anymore. ◙ antes do filme várias outras canções eram mais conhecidas do que ela.
Thanks, Marissa! Thanks, Tyler! 🔁 I hope you've heard Austin Weber's version of this one... he did the video in Japan. #TylerCreatesContent #MammaMia #ABBA
It would be nice to hear you react to one of their songs in swedish! You haven't reacted to Ring Ring or Honey Honey yet. It would be amazing if you first react to the English version, and then the Swedish. 🙏😍 There's also a swedish version of Waterloo, and Fernando was first released in swedish by Frida alone, and later in English by ABBA. 🙏
"The ABBA Teens" (a.k.a. "A* Teens) did a cover version in the late 90's, on their album "The ABBA Generation". They say that imitation is the ultimate form of flattery, and their younger compatriots did just that.
@German Morawski I liked them, they had a lot of energy and helped to introduce ABBA's music to a newer generation............and of course their covers of the Swedish legends was quite an impressive "hommage" to ABBA.
No, Mama Mia didn't chart highly in the US. Made the top 40 but only as high as 30 something . In most other countries it was number one . The discrepancy between US and the rest of the world in regards to ABBA until recently is astounding .
Abba did not tour in the states. That was an very important thing in the 70ies to get really popular there then. Probably the main explanation to why they only had one number one over there..
I’m so jealous that international fans had so much more time with ABBA growing up…my mother who is from Mexico got me hooked on ABBA. No one I knew growing up listened to ABBA. I was a closeted ABBA fan when I was a kid.
Your next song?? Try something totally different. Did you want sheer amazement and sonic wonderment? Go with “Hole in Your Soul” (studio version)…..or do you want the penultimate WTF moment? Then go with “King Kong Song”.
The number of records they sold indicates they were very popular. Keep in mind this is way way back before your time. Want crazy outfits? Check out Elton John. Thanks. Your Bass is a bit too loud.
ABBA didn't get much recognition in the U.S. during that time because the American obsession was a contemporary band *made of 2 couples with turbulent relationships* and similarly fantastic songs... Fleetwood Mac.
Great song but not on my ABBA top 10 list :) Next reactions have to be ;) - Take A Chance On Me (musicvideo) or Lay All Your Love On Me. You are gonna love this 2 songs
HEY TYLER, WHAT I WANT TO KNOW IS WHICH OF YOU TWO ARE MOVED TO FIND GREATER LOVE AND UNION TOWARDS EACH OTHER. LET ME OR OTHERS KNOW . TAKE CARE FROM EMILIO IN ADELAIDE CITY IN AUSTRALIA
Ace of Base was a big hit in the US for a short period of time. The problem with Europop is, hit songs like "...Baby One More Time" which were written and produced by Swedish dudes, and recorded in Sweden by an American artist are not categorized as Europop, but just regular POP music. So... artists like Spice Girls, Take That, Backstreet Boys, and many others are not considered Europop, but just artists influenced by Europop music.

And no, this was not popular here in the U.S....#32 on the Billboard charts. I heard it once on the radio back in '79 after I got friendly with a DJ at a Trenton NJ station. He was kind enough to play it for me. I always enjoy your ABBA reactions...keep them coming!
Shout out from Hamilton, NJ! You must have been listening to WBUD or WPST!
@@Earcandy73 lol...I sure remember WPST, but this was an AM station...WTTM. Can't remember the station numbers though.
@@abbagodz AH WTTM “World Takes Trenton Makes” AM 920 broadcasting from the Carteret Arms building on West State Street.
@@Earcandy73 OMG!! Love it!! It was my favorite radio station back in 8th grade. Thanks for remembering!
@German Morawski None of their songs fit onto U.S. radio. back then. I'm still surprised they had 4 Top 10 songs here. Never played much on the radio where I lived. I'm old...I remember.
the number of catchy songs by ABBA seems almost endless.
This was the era of glam rock. Look at the costumes worn by people like Elton John and David Bowie, at the time😄
Another thing today's listeners miss is that ABBA was pre-MTV.
Keep 'em coming👍
thats me and summer night city are 2 tracks i know you will love.
Its 70s wear gen-z it always comes back so get ready.🤣 backstory much of ABBAs music based their marriages ABBA is comprised of two couples❤️
They had their signature pose in almost their every music videos because almost all of them were directed by one person, Lars Sven "Lasse" Hallström.
Yah so many ABBA songs were massive number ones worldwide but barely known in the states
I would wear that. Why not?
Hello
Try ABBA "Rock Me" is a glam
rock very good song you must listen
NOW THAT’s “ABBA”!!
Please do SLIPPING THRU MY FINGERS LIVE and THNK YOU FOR THE MUSIC by ABBA
You need to do When I kissed the teacher, with video, it’s really fun and playful. And also If it wasn’t for the nights (performance from Tokio) and Hasta Manana.
i am 57 and grew up with this group . their best song to me by far was Dancing Queen
ABBA were huge internationally - nine no 1 songs in the U.K. alone. They were popular in the US but not as much as in places like Europe and Australia. Dancing Queen was - incredibly - their only US no 1 single.
That's right. But also in UK- the metropolis of modern pop music scene- ...added 10(!) No1 Albums VOYAGE being their last one after 4 decades!
Yes and Take a chance on me came close at no. 3.
@@davidparsons6989 TACOM despite not hitting top spot but being No3 in USA,sold more copies than DQ at the time there btw.
@@alexioverdo5225 I didn’t know that. Just shows you that chart positions are just that - they don’t give you the full story of the success of a single or album
@@colinmackillopTrue.Sometimes not always "the full story".
I like that you two are in your car - like it's forbidden in your town to listen to ABBA - kind of "ike the movie "Footloose". Do some of ABBAs Spanish songs!
You need to remember rhat when ABBA first started in 1972 in there native sweden outfits like these were considered trendsetting in that country
Certainly a favorite ABBA song!
You gotta remember it was the 70s
Try seeing the movie
MAMA MIA all ABBA music .
Youll be blown away...
Yes, ABBA was a much bigger international band, than here in the States…which still blows me away.
React to Soldiers, The Piper and One of Us next (individually of course, not all at once :) )!
One of us! Itś a great song 😀
It would be nice to hear you react to one of their songs in swedish! You haven't reacted to Ring Ring or Honey Honey yet. It would be amazing if you first react to the English version, and then the Swedish. 🙏😍
There's also a swedish version of Waterloo, and Fernando was first released in swedish by Frida alone, and later in English by ABBA. 🙏
Can you post a link to Svenska versions. I've looked for years and a Swedish neighbour said they didn't record in Svenska.
@@Andygarrett357 You can find them on spotify! Search for Waterloo, Honey Honey, or Ring Ring and then swedish.
It hits deeply
No, Mama Mia didn't chart highly in the US. Made the top 40 but only as high as 30 something . In most other countries it was number one . The discrepancy between US and the rest of the world in regards to ABBA until recently is astounding .
Abba did not tour in the states. That was an very important thing in the 70ies to get really popular there then. Probably the main explanation to why they only had one number one over there..
Not my favorite song of theirs, but it and SOS laid the foundation for what was to follow.
TAKE A CHANCE ON ME(Despite reaching N03 there, their biggest USA seller)/WATERLOO next ones plz.
I don't think that's a xylophone, I've read somewhere benny saw a marimba in the studio when they were recording this song and used that in the intro
I’m so jealous that international fans had so much more time with ABBA growing up…my mother who is from Mexico got me hooked on ABBA. No one I knew growing up listened to ABBA. I was a closeted ABBA fan when I was a kid.
Mama Mia charted on the us billboard hot 100 at #32. So it was a minor hit In the us.
But a major hit worldwide
#1 in Australia (10 weeks!)
#1 in UK Charts, knocking to Bohemian Raphsody (by Queen)
and much more all over the world
Yes I know. The u.s. are very picky in their taste of music.
And I still heard it on the radio constantly without knowing who they were yet.
@@VideosSmokin
U.S. have a 'special taste'
They don't like ABBA so much, but the rest of the world loves ABBA
I’m a Marionette. Or Take A Chance On Me next please .
Your next song?? Try something totally different. Did you want sheer amazement and sonic wonderment? Go with “Hole in Your Soul” (studio version)…..or do you want the penultimate WTF moment? Then go with “King Kong Song”.
Hears piano- "What the heck is that?!?!?"
The number of records they sold indicates they were very popular. Keep in mind this is way way back before your time. Want crazy outfits? Check out Elton John. Thanks. Your Bass is a bit too loud.
Try Does your mother know / Hole in your soul live
ABBA didn't get much recognition in the U.S. during that time because the American obsession was a contemporary band *made of 2 couples with turbulent relationships* and similarly fantastic songs... Fleetwood Mac.
ABBA had some WILD outfits! I preferred the mini skirts myself! LOL
Mamma Mia in Italian means Good Heavens.
I love your camo t shirt. Where did you get it? 🤣
Great song but not on my ABBA top 10 list :) Next reactions have to be ;) - Take A Chance On Me (musicvideo) or Lay All Your Love On Me. You are gonna love this 2 songs
Super !
Slipping through my fingers...
HEY TYLER, WHAT I WANT TO KNOW IS WHICH OF YOU TWO ARE MOVED TO FIND GREATER LOVE AND UNION TOWARDS EACH OTHER.
LET ME OR OTHERS KNOW . TAKE CARE FROM EMILIO IN ADELAIDE CITY IN AUSTRALIA
Your parents neglected you for not introducing you to ABBA, taking you to see the stage show and the two movies.
next song guys The Piper
They were silly 'non-street wear' as they could claim clothing as a tax deduction if it was for work.
Its hard to appricuate a song if you pause it every 30 secunds.
The clothes in the 70s? Eh, uhm, no. But - the music was good.
Remer it before MTV original video

The U.S. was and likely still is not much into so called Euro-pop. There are the exceptions but mostly they don't meet great success in the U.S.
