- Merle Haggard performance live at North High in his hometown of Oildale, Ca. He was holding a benefit for his longtime friend and lead guitarist, Roy Nichols. Roy was in attendance with his wife and family members. Roy had suffered a stroke and was unable to play his guitar. He was confined to a wheelchair but he was in good spirits, he speech was not impeded and he was still sharp mentally. The incomparable Rose Maddox opened the show and Merle played for about an hour and a half. We gave Roy $16,000 cash the next day.
The best that ever was ,still listen to him every single day ! He was the only star I ever wanted to meet ,but I did get to see him live 2 times ! Imagine all my friends listening to rock ,and I’m riding my bicycle with a am transistor radio ,with Sony headphones listing to KRAK am 1140 out of Sacramento, waiting for the next time they would play Merle ,thankfully they played him a lot! I’m 60 now ,and he will always be my all time favorite ❤️👍 thanks Ray for sharing your Memories 👍
Absolutely cool that you are such a fan for your whole life! I’m so glad you like these. Thanks!
Love Roys Playing
Thank you! Any live Merle is a bonus. Great tribute to Roy, the smoothest country picker of all time. I wanted it to keep going! Love that song.
You are welcome sir! More to come from that show.
Thanks for posting this Ray. Loved your book. Wish you would write 3 more!
Thanks! I’m planning on sharing a few more of these soon. They are for his fans.
Love you Ray!! ❤️
Thanks for uploading, Ray; this is great to see and it's great to know the backstory behind the show, too. Yesterday I was listening to 'No Hard Time Blues' from the 'Live In Muskogee' album and - despite hearing it so many times before - listening to Roy's solo just blew me away. I look forward to more from this show - thanks again for uploading!
My honor man
