For a live performance this has it all: perfect intonation all the way around, the three part harmony cuts like a buzz saw, Roy and Norm filling the holes with brutal elegance, and the minimalist approach by the rhythm section makes this is close to perfect is one will ever hear. My god they were so damn tight you couldn’t wedge a Bible page between the spaces
I know I don't know you, but I really hope you're finding a way to survive your loss. I know that death is hardest on the living, and losing a child is something I can't imagine, so I really am wishing the best for you.
Me and my papa used to listen to merle when I spent the night with him and I'm so thankful to have those memories of merle and my papa Rip merle and papa you are missed

I have never been to a bar, and I have never drank any alcohol, but, I LOVE this song. Just love Merle, so talented as a singer, song writer and musician
This is the first song I heard by Merle Haggard. A punk rock cover of this song led me here 4 years ago. At a time when drinking was starting to take over my life, his words and music spoke to me greatly. "_I always had a bottle I could turn to.. and lately I've been turnin' everyday_" . Like where else can you find something like that? Subsequently, everything I found by him was awesome and he quickly became one of my favorites. Tonight I'm drinking, breaking up with a girl.. but finding comfort listening to 'ol Merle Haggard. And of course, drinking.
I quit drinking a little over 4 years ago. The bottle was always empty as was my heart and wallet. Now I don't need Swinging Doors, a bottle but I still am addicted to the jukebox.
Each night I leave the bar room when it's over Not feeling any pain at closing time But tonight your memory found me much too sober Couldn't drink enough to keep you off my mind Tonight the bottle let me down And let your memory come around The one true friend I thought I'd found Tonight the bottle let me down I've always had a bottle I could turn to And lately I've been turnin' every day But the wine don't take effect the way it used to And I'm hurtin' in an old familiar way Tonight the bottle let me down And let your memory come around The one true friend I thought I'd found Tonight the bottle let me down Tonight the bottle let me down
The last two days have been spent listening ,singing, and playing Merle..now that don't mean I am a musician,it means I tried to play his songs..somewhat..Anyway,I had a good time listening to his music!
A guitar player once asked me HOW I got that effect on the guitar string bending , trying to copy a 'Lick' by Roy Nichols. I TOO , at first was STUMPED on HOW he was doing it. In this song for example,.... Bottle Let Me down, when Roy plays his 2nd half of the intro and the ride....He isnt bending that string UP................ He is SILENTLY bending it UP FIRST, then he plays the note and then he RELEASES it. 🙂 His last note is an open "D" note played on the E string, tuned DOWN to a "D". 🙂 (Seen at 0:13 time in this video)
Awww that intro/solo with Norm and Roy! can't get enough of them!
Why can't we have country music like that today?
You can. Ever heard of Zephaniah Ohora?
Ain't you watching this, it's a miracle of science
Grandpa's Cough Medicine (ok, it's bluegrass)
Hank Williams III (who covered this song as well)
So we can tell these kids, they don't know what country "western" music is.
WOW! The audio quality after all these years is amazing and the steel guitar has never sounded better on this song.
Tom - it's cool to compare this version to how he sounded in later years - gravelly voice and all.

Today marks the one year anniversary of losing my 20 year old daughter. This song could not ring more true for me tonight.
truly sorry for your loss
My condolences. I hope you've found peace.
