Mine, had the same. The condensor outside the poinys box. Is better to oppen the clutch and take out the plate who kep the Oring. That plate have a metal on a bolt what is pushing the pin to the points. My plate it was the wrong direction and the pin seat direct to the shaft and I coudn't set the timing point correctly. You have the movie with repair on my list. You see there all.
If it's about the 11th minute of the movie, you see I have a movie on my list, just the technical repair book. The point of contact touches the ground wire (motor housing). I connected a 12v battery. (+) to one of the wires from the bulb and the minus (-) to the motor housing. Second wire from the bulb connected to the contact point. Do not forget: (capacitor disconnected. Disconect the capacitor wire from the contact points). When the contact point is touched, the bulb has (-) from the housing through the point of contact and lights up. The bulb must light up, as described in the technical book, 5 mm before the magnet reaches the spark plug sheets.
You can find in my list a movie with the name "Lombardini LA - LAP 400 - 490 - 510 Repair Manual". At the minute 2:05 you have the page number 22 where you can see all distances: of contact points 0,7mm. You can put 1.2...3 papers to have 0,5 - 0,7mm betwin the spark coil and the magnet. And the distance betwin tha down edge of the magnet and the down metal from the coil, must be betwin 5 - 7mm. In this point the connected bulb will oppen. If you have a normal contact points and the bolt who is pushing to oppen the contact points and the distance of contact points is maximum opeen 0.7mm, that 5-7 mm is normal. You cannot change the coil position. If is not 5 -7mm something is wrong. Send me a mesage again iff is not ok.
