Shucking a WD BLACK D10 12TB Hard Drive

- I couldn't find a video on how to shuck the 3.5" D10 WD_black Xbox One Game Drive Drives so I made one myself. There is a little more work involved once you get the lid off. This video shows you how to remove the drive without destroying the case.
I've done this today. I'm very impressed with the speed of these drives. This video is a few years old, and the newest drives are exactly the same as there's no difference.
EXACTLY the video I needed to show me the steps involved; the plan is to take mine off external USB 3 and move to internal SATA 6 for much-faster backups if everything works. THANK YOU!
Thank you for taking the time to make the video.
I thank you also. It is always nice to see what is inside something.
many many thanks toyou i usef one of my koscher clamp to remove the holders…..my i was stuck removing the inside holders and you helped really has stopped responding so i needed to place in a new case
*sees a suspiciously new cut after mentioning how difficult those clamps are a bit too much* hmmmmm
Nice! I'll give it another go... 3.5" Usb enclosure drives are WAY cheaper than normal ones...
Ordinary narrow-nose pliers with serrated jaws work very well at removing the side clips without breaking them.
found for 3 of the clips i could push them out from the other side, the vents line up, there is one that i had prize out due to the vent being covered.
If anyone buys one and takes out the drive for internal use, I will happily buy the case
Does the fan work while the device is on? or does it only turn on when it gets hot?
I bought the 8TB ones, my drive runs as hot as 49c (which is still much warmer than I'd like, but I digress). The fan has never turned on. From what I hear, it only turns on above 65c.
@@TheLongestChannelNameThoughtOf Well I wonder if that's a good idea? Can't even control the fan that's lame. Would think in the dashboard you could turn it on and schedule it when it gets to a certain temperature? That way we can have it on at 40oC to cool it to maybe 30's.
Thanks for the reply m8.
Those plastic clip things were a pain to get out
6:30 model is HUH721212ALE604 and the E means 512e vs 4kn in the N model and the 4 means secure erase overwrite vs instant in the 0 model. I'd prefer the HUH721212ALN600.
What does that mean?
@@m3gAnac0nda means the drive is slower than he wants, but you don't really get to pick when it's something like this
Greetings, one question, does the fan works? it must be on when you connect the hdd or it turns on when it gets hot?, thanks
Pretty late answer, but after doing some research on the same matter I found out that the fan only turns on at 60C!
63°C actually
Very good, so if I ever have get a failing harddisk the drive inside is exchangeable (not easy exchangeable because this annoying clip mounting system for the upper shell makes it difficult to get that upper cover off unharmed and without any scratches... but it`s possible.) The PCB is not soldered onto the harddisk like in the P10 Game Drive which is awesome! Exchangeable disks make the beautyful external drive case very versatile and long-lasting.
If you get a failed hard drive in one of these enclosures you’re better off buying another external mounted hard drive. All the companies charge more $$ for the raw drives. For example a WD Red Plus 8TB costs $198 right now. A 14 TB external costs $160. Unless you really need the durability of the Red Plus the external is the more economical choice.
Any chance of posting a link to the tools used please?
You only need a hex key for the case screws, the spudger/pry tool for the case clips, and he's pretty brilliant to use the chip puller, but a decent pair of needle-nose pliers or large hemostats (what I used) will work. That and a Philips head to remove the PCB/power assembly.
One of my all-time favorite hacks is to make a spudger out of a bamboo chopstick (those cheap ones they have at Chinese takeaway). Bamboo is so strong it can pry (though you really don't want to pry it open, so much as slide the tool around the clips) open a case, but it's also soft enough not to mar the surfaces of most components. To do this, you just need a sharp knife and a surface. You really just whittle the chopstick down until it has a fine edge along the front tapered down from about 5-15 mm (depending on what you're jimmying open, longer for smaller things generally).
@@DurhamBell Old credit cards and gift cards also work great as pry tools.
So is it Cheaper chucking it or just purchasing bare bone drive?
is that a plastic case with an aluminum-look - or aluminum?
plastic
What do you think ramps them motors up for higher speeds
Does this drive work on PC as well as xbox?
Without shucking I mean.
yes, its just a usb enclosure.
Won't opening the case void the warranty?
So this was cheaper than buying individual drives 😆
Could you post a link on the tools that you use on Amazon?
Anyone know where I can get this little toolkit
Is there a fan on this drive? Looks to be non existent or is it just tiny? Thanks!
There is a tiny fan with 3 pin connector.
Perp atratur thanks!
Hi i have the same one to crack open but wondered will this be fine in my 3900x build, i know western digital sometimes, put an external board on them and it leaves the drive in a reset loop , will i have to disable pins 3 and 5 on sata power so the bios picks this drive up thanks,
It went straight into my nas no problems.
Yes you must disable 3.3 pin if you use PSU.
@Keith Blowes I never had to disable any pins. I have 3 now and they went straight into my Synology 1019+ nas with no modification
Hi hope you are well? i decided to keep it for the Xbox series X if i can grab one many thanks Stay Safe
no pin disablement required if you use normal sata power connector from your psu; if you use some sort of molex to sata adapter to get sata power you might.
so are they lying about the active cooling? where is it?
Followed this tutorial which was great btw, but some of the internal clips which you need to pull out have snapped the end retaining part on one side, even though they were pulled carefully. Anyone know where I might be able to source some replacements from in case I need to send back for warranty at any point? I guess I got a brittle set
I just bought two when they were on sale and all 8 broke. None of the previous three had. No idea where to get replacements, sorry.
@@perpatratur5089 yeah I expect a lot of people might experience this with these latest sale ones. Might be able to 3d print replacements
@@mattwaddy1 and you think thats gonna help you not void the warranty???
Very usefull thak you!
I have noticed that it heats up to 52 degrees C and makes noise when working. Is this normal on this model?
Yes normal operating temperature is max 60C. However, the fan only turns on at 60C, so the advertising (Active cooling) is misleading. I've heard numerous stories of these drives overheating. Disappointing
Thank You!
Does that case have active cooling? Unable to tell from the video.
Yes, there is a small fan you see disconnected at 4:34
@@perpatratur5089 Thanks
WHats the different between the drive inside the D10 and this HUH721212ALE604? The internal retail at 450€? the D10 for 290€ - might be worth doing same as you and adding it to the desktop?
Of course those usb enclosure drives are way cheaper! If your pc doesn't recognise it, you must tape 1 or 2 sata pins, tutorial are on YT
still to this day they don't sell the TB in realtime? unbelievable. it is 10.9TB.
Windows in converting the 1 mb to a 1024 kb. That why lol ofc the drive it self is 12 tb
@@deadscene1 Yeah, but totally think they should show real-time on the box as well, so you get the jist of it cause you never ever use 12TB in a 12TB hdd, they only say 12TB still for marketting purposes, it's stupid business practice in my opinion. Such a cliche like sweet shops selling 2.99 when anyone with half a brain knows it's 3 quid lol.
@@deusvlad2.083 on every other device (except pc and consoles) you can see that is 12 tb or whatever size is stated on the drive .
@@deadscene1 Oh really? I had no idea I've only used a PC thanks
what size allen wrench is that???
Not sure. I just had a few lying around. a T-10 works fine too though
Is it the actual black drive though?
HI mine is a external 12tb WD black D10 external
If you look at the drive is shows it to be a WD DC HC520 which is one of WD/HGST's Data Centre / Enterprise drives - so 7200rpm and 512mb cache versions, some may have been the helium filled ones too. The colour labels that WD attach are pretty meaning less; the drives are all made of the same bits just a few firmware tweaks here and there.
@@Apex180 they are helium filled but these are only 256mb cache.
@@nathanslinn HUH721212ALE604 - just checked and yeah this one is only 256mb but still 7200rpm. Still they are the DC HC520 drives.
@@Apex180 "the drives are all made of the same bits just a few firmware tweaks here and there." Isn't that the difference between a Ford and a Ferrari? Enterprise drives are designed for a different purpose, which is, amongst other things, longevity/lifecycle, mechanical tolerances, data integrity and are not limited by acoustic (lack of) requirements due to the environment it’s been designed for. i.e. Datacentres!
Could you put this into a desktop pc?
Yes
If your pc doesn't recognise the drive, check out how to make it work. You sometimes have to tape 1 or 2 sata pins.
anyone use it as internal in pc? i have 8tb version HGST HUS728T8TALE6L4
and in system im getting I/O error - cant in device manager assign gpt or mbsr.... so i cant allocate harddrive...dont know why :/... when i plug it as external, it was fine (i just test it first time if hdd work) , i formated from exfat into ntfs....i get out hdd, plug it into pc..and problem...
You might need to mod the power if it has the extra pin. Plenty of guides on the web.
@@perpatratur5089 yes, solved.. i found info about pin...its third pin on power sata from left side( from data sata side conector) ..that pin just simply cover with some tape... . than also i had to enable writing as it was only in read mode ... i did it with command in command line... just for info if anyone will have same issue
@@truckercech you should not need to mod the pin if you use proper sata power connector; if you are using some janky ass molex to sata power adapter thats where you will get issues; the 12TB drive i have in my rig is connected to a sata power plug and no mod needed.
@@Apex180 yes this 8tb wd black need this mod.. working no problem... no i dont haveč junk vables :D i have evga 850w gold :D
@@truckercech Odd, if thats a fairly new psu then it should not have issues, oh well least its working for you.
can the hard drive be used as internal?
Sure can. These drives are currently £200 on Western Digitals site. Sign up as a new customer for an extra 10% off making them £180. Bargain
@@perpatratur5089 Yup bought 2 today.Great deal.A wee question if you don't mind. What are the chances of these not being Ultrastar drives?
Ordered 2 myself today to fill my Synology 1019+. The 3 previous were all Ultrastars. I bought them all separately at different times so no reason to think they aren't all Ultrastars
@@perpatratur5089 Ok.Thanks.Fingers crossed.
@@gdoc7662 hey, if you've got them.
can you tell me if yours was also ultrastar drives?
I also plan to buy d10 8tb for my internal storage on my pc
Mine doesn't look like this on the inside
they might have changed the design, if you would like to record and upload a vid to YT showing this it might help others out (if its the same external enclosure)
Are these the infamous SMR drives? I know SMR is not the worst but you absolutely positively MUST know what you are getting because SMR is a lot better suited for backups which rarely if ever change. I have read horror stories of people using drives they did not know were SMR in a NAS and it took an abnormally long time to rebuild the array. It is not simply because some file systems do not work nicely with them. The problem lies in having to rewrite a lot of data when ANY of it changes. It can cause a very severe performance hit too.
Shouldn't be
The drives WD where forced to admit where SMR are
WD red: 2tb,3tb,4tb,5tb,6tb
WD blue: 2tb and 6tb
WD blue 2.5": 1 tb and 2 tb
WD black 2.5": 1tb
WD officially stated in April that all others are CMR not SMR
Edit: Just checked as the drive here is a DC520 - the enterprise drives are PMR not SMR
As someone else mentioned, you have totally mixed this with some other drives. These are top quality enterprise PMR drives.
Not a real WD Black? Ultrastar better?
Holy crap you think they used enough screws 😂🤣😂
Hi
What is the noise compared to wd red? I have a wd red 8tb and it is pretty loud
These are white label NAS drives, similar to WD Reds in 8TB and higher capacities
@@xistencestudios8904 These are loud. I shucked a couple and put them in a Synology NAS and the HDD noise was constant whether they were doing anything or not. Way louder than any HDD I've had since the early 2000's. So bad in fact that I'm back here looking at how to de-shuck (put them back in the cases) so I can just use them as temporary backup drives and get something quieter for my NAS.
Better buy the internal HDD and a USB-SATA case aside, cause if one breaks the USB door on a External-WD-HD, one is screwed!! Hahaha
These hdd are way cheaper than the internal 12 TB ones
your point being ?
On sale now at Microsoft for 299.00 lol
Can it be installed as a normal hdd in the case?
yes
