Reading the comments, it seems like this game is leaving a lot to be desired. To anyone who reads this, out of sheer curiosity, what would be the features, mechanics, and characters of *your* "ideal" Phantasmagoria-style Touhou game?
Higher damage, a score system using the chain mechanic, better balancing (some chars are broken some are borderline useless), and a smash bros tier of fan-service roster
To be honest, there are a lot of interesting design ideas in this game. But for every step ZUN takes forward, he also takes like 10 backwards and also trips over some really easy things like menu states just exploding when you have a controller in any USB port. I like the idea of not needing to deal with the bullshit AI anymore, even if it's a glorified timer - to some extent. The second screen in many cases may as well be for show though (which I don't know how I would help that, necessarily) and several boss patterns **repeat** over and over. When you combine that with some patterns being ripped note-for-note copy pasted from HBM/18.5, it just feels wrong. Like this game could've had a bit more time devoted to its patterns at first glance. I don't know what ZUN was going crazy developing because a lot of it looks straightforward... Though I do like the idea behind using level 4s to force the boss into responding with a new boss attack, that's nice. (I wish it actually worked as you'd expect though...) From there, my main system problem is the lack of a universal defensive mechanic that's actually good. I'll commend the shield system for...existing, because in the demo it didn't. But it's not enough. In addition to it requiring a lot of risk to actually put back up (I think level 2-4 could've done it, though I'll commend this system for giving level 3 a reason to exist...), it *stuns you in place* when you get hit. For some Ex attacks that track you, they can basically spawn camp you and it becomes entirely useless. There was knockback on hit in the older games, but where you were moved to was intangible for a bit - enemies couldn't spawn camp you because they are aiming at the wrong position. There's too much to talk about in one comment (much more than just these) because I put a lot of thought into this but... I respect ZUN's attempt at something new. I can't respect the results
One of my biggest things I hope for Touhou 20 is new sprites for the playable characters and fairy enemies. Comparing the new playable characters sprites with Reimu, Marisa and Sanae’s sprites, you can tell the old sprites don’t fit anymore in modern touhou games. And it keeps suprising me that those sprites still haven’t been updated since Touhou 9 which is 18 years. It’s okay if not every game gets new sprites after the previous one (but which was the case between Touhou 6-9) but if they won’t be updated for too long it’s getting too noticable and looking heavily dated.
I get why there's no Extra Mode. Sure, it's a big shame, but a good game can be a good game without any extra modes or whatever. That said, cutting out even the most basic elements such as score, replays, esc combinations just to have yet another game with shiny new characters and the card mechanic released in time is outright baffling. It was already unnatural when older games had replay desync, input lag and more that fans had to fix, but cutting out so many things entirely is even worse, especially when it doesn't even make for a more focused game in the end. I would joke about cutting out focus mode at this point, but even a game with focus cut that is properly designed around it would be better than this. I'd say it would be better if ZUN took a break from developing games, rushing those doesn't benefit anyone.
Did the replay desyncs actually get fixed? I remember people actively not bothering because the mentality of "this isn't accurate, so it is worthless!" always pops up for fixing gameplay-bugs.
