Hi Kyle. Thanks for another great video. I have most of these, but will definitely look out for the two Tom Waits tributes you mentioned. If you don’t know it, I recommend 12 Crass Songs by Jeffrey Lewis. You don’t need to be a fan of either artist to enjoy it.
You missed a fantastic one - one of the first and the best: Iain Matthews paying tribute to Jules Shear on WALKING A CHANGING LINE: The Songs of Jules Shear - in 1988. Matthews later paid tribute to former Fairport Convention bandmate Sandy Denny on No Grey Faith: Secrets All Told - The Songs Of Sandy Denny (2000). Both tributes are stunning.
Great info on cover albums a couple there to add to my collection Joan Baez....Any Day Now was a double album of Bob Dylan covers anyone else do a double album?
I can't think of any double albums. Of course, while the Baez album was a double when it came out, it easily fits on a single CD today. With that in mind, many of the tribute albums that come out on single CD today might have been double albums on vinyl had they come out 40 years ago.
Seriously, 1980 is the earliest one to one tribute album you can think of? Was quite common at least as far back as the mid '50s. See/hear the Jimmie Rodgers tributes from Lefty Frizel, Hank Snow, and Ernest Tubb. As well as Ella Fitzgerald's many songbook albums dedicated to single composers or teams. None of these are really obscure. There were even tribute albums on 78s when an album looked like a picture album
