The tectonic impact Björk had to electronic music with her 4 album streak of Debut, Post, Homogenic and Vespertine. The maturation and sheer brilliance of Robyn's Honey. The way SZA spoke to many millenials and Gen-Z with Ctrl.
The Velvet Rope was very groundbreaking when it was released in ‘97. It talked about domestic violence, depression, lack of self-worth, grief, black pride, BDSM, masturbation, and so much more. I was 13 at the time and my mother refused to buy me a copy of it and I was forbidden to listen to it. So once I turned 18, I listened to this masterpiece and I have been hooked on it ever since. TVR actually kept me from committing suicide. Thank you Janet.
First Butterfly, then The Velvet Rope... if you do the magnificence of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.. that's it: you'll complete the holy trinity of best albums of all time. ;)
Both The Velvet Rope and Janet. are AMAZING, some of the best of the 90's. I wish people would pay more respect to her, she have an amazing discography.
Picture this: It's 1997, I'm a 15yo kid obsessed with popular music. I go out and buy Jewel's album Pieces of You. Excited, I get home, put the CD in the stereo, press play, and expecting to hear some acoustic guitar, I instead hear this quiet voice: "Twisted elegance..." followed by distortion, some faint jazz piano chords, and a spoken word intro about the human need to feel special. The voice sounds familiar, but I'm certain it's not Jewel. When she says the words "the velvet rope," it clicks: that was the title of the new Janet album. The CD had been mislabelled; a factory misprint. I'm annoyed that I'll have to go all the way back to the store to return it. I keep listening though, and before long, that beat kicks in on the title track, and in that moment, I become a Janet fan for life. I listened to it the whole way through. It was unlike anything I'd heard...daring, exciting, thrilling. So I listened again. Then again. And a thousand times more. I never returned the misprinted CD - I still have it today...along with the legit copy I eventually bought, along with every other Janet album, single and bootleg I could find. There are only a handful of moments that, looking back on my life, I believe were not coincidence, that were destined to happen. And the way Velvet Rope found its way into my life and changed me forever, is one of those moments. It inspired me to self reflect and examine my own interior life, and nourished my emotional intelligence. It opened my mind and my heart, and gave me the eyes to see myself for what I was and what I will always be: a Work In Progress.
The Velvet Rope is such a groundbreaking album and so many artists use this album as a guide for making dark and moody type albums and blend a little sexiness in it this album pave the way Janet Jackson knew what she was doing when creating this true masterpiece.
Yes. So happy to see you cover this album, I can honestly state that The Velvet Rope is my favourite album of all time. I was familiar with mainly her singles till last year when during Lockdown, I just felt the urge to listen to her albums in full and I couldn't believe the absolute amazing body of work this woman has.
so glad you discussed this masterpiece. every Janet album from control to the velvet rope is top tier, in my opinion. glad she’s finally getting her flowers!!
They really tried to take her legacy away! News Flash you can't when its pure talent Janet deserve it all give her the flowers she ultimately deserves. 💐
This video is excellent. Well done, Flashy. The Velvet Rope is one of my all-time favourites. For Janet, it felt like a risk to release something so personal, but that's why it means so much to fans.
I don’t get how this woman only has 5 Grammys. The categories she has them in Are bullsh**. How has she not won record, song, and album of the year? Control, RN1814. Janet, and the velvet rope are all album of the year worthy.. I don’t get the issue the Grammys have with Janet and Mariah 😭
In the 80’s and 90’s the Grammy’s really were so white and the awards committees had a strong preference for singer songwriters who sat and played instruments over those that danced. Now I would say it’s virtually the reverse. Beyoncé might be good but there’s just no sane way she deserves more Grammy’s than Michael Jackson, Elvis, Queen, Janet, Tina Turner etc. I think if you added Janet’s, Tina’s and Whitney’s Grammys together you’d still have less than Beyonce
Yay! You finally did a video on TVR. TVR turns 25 next year, and I can say this album has gotten through me a lot in life. I’m thankful that Janet made this masterpiece. TVR is arguably one of the most influential albums in past two decades.

I remember very clearly how I thought it was such an AMAZING album… I didn’t comprehend why people around me couldn’t see it. I now understand it was just ahead of its time! I dont know if its because we were jumping into another century but even busted folks like Madonna made good music with Ray of Light her best cd to date. Amazing video! Thank you for highlighting the nipple incident. I've always thought that the number of complaints it got was absolutely absurd. Here in Europe nobody bat an eyelid. I think it goes to show how messed up conservative America is rather than Janet's nipple being exposed for a milli second. Ridiculous
The Velvet Rope, Butterfly, Ray of Light, & I want to add Whitney's My Love is Your Love especially since it inspired an entire greatest hits album of dance house mixes that elevated the Vocal house remix.
