My 4th Great Grandfather, Samuel Johnson served as a Texas Ranger from 1837 to 1841 and has a Kentucky Rifle, a powder horn and bullet mold on display at the museum.

One of my 2nd cousins is in that museum. I've never made it to the museum but it is at the top of my list. Frank Hamer's mother and my GG Grandmother were first cousins, to me he is my second cousin.

My 4th great grandfather Harrison Ables along with his Brothers Ezekiel Ables Jr., Joseph "Josee" Ables, James Ables and their father (my 5th great grandfather) Ezekiel Ables Sr.
Were all Volunteer Rangers to fight the Indians.
My 4th great grandfather Harrison also fought at the battle of San jacinto, and was part of the detachment that captured Santa Anna.

I have the greatest respect for the Rangers ! As a deputy sheriff in western SD about 20 yrs ago I had the privilege of working a case with a Ranger long-distance. - I hope Joaquin Jackson is in the Ranger Hall of Fame !

The Texas Ranger Museum in Waco is well worth a visit. I have been there twice, and only regretfully left at closing time. They have a collection of the most beautiful engraved pistols I have ever seen. Apparently, long-time Rangers would receive an engraved pistol upon retirement ( sure beats a gold watch ) then their widows would donate them to the museum after the husband's passing.

@@darrellhamner4608 Yes, within the context of this thread your dismissive “bad things happen “ supports the lavish praise in many of the responses. The Rangers’ actions were not an extension of war, but rather racist massacres. Read the history, both sides of it.

@@SWSadu Yes the event was a tragedy. So was the killing of many civilians by Mexican raiders into the US during that time.

Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. For he is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil. Therefore you must be subject, not only because of wrath but also for conscience’ sake. For because of this you also pay taxes, for they are God’s ministers attending continually to this very thing. Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor. Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not bear false witness,” “You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
