My Dad flew 46 combat mission with VF-19 from the Lexington in the summer and fall of 1944. I made a special trip from the Naval Air Museum in Pensacola to Corpus Christi to see the ship, and loved every minute of my visit. There's even a photo, tucked away in a little alcove below the flight deck, of my Dad and several other VF-19 pilots. From the galley to the machine shop to the hangar deck and the captain's bridge - good stuff!
You really need to record his stories. My grandad served on that ship but never told stories it was like pulling teeth. If you can try and get him to tell his story plz

Ships built during WW2 like Lexington or before were built to last more than 5 or 6 years. My dad who passed in 2017 at age 92 was on the heavy cruiser USS Louisville CA 28 from 1943-46. The Lady Lou was already 10 years old when WW2 started and earned 13 battle stars in the Pacific. The old battleships and old cruisers did the majority of the bombardment in WW2 in the Pacific too. My dad witnesses 51 sailors and Rear Admiral Theodore Chandler buried at sea due to 3 kamikaze hits in the Pacific. The USS Louisville was stored until 1959 in Phila. and one of her 8 inch 55 caliber turrets is in the Nevada Desert. My dad & I visited the Blue Ghost USS Lexington CV 16 a long with the aquarium . God bless our service men & women - past and present.
My old man did his duty on the Lex in the early 60s. He never left the Gulf of Mexico as it was used as a training ship for aviators. I think at one time my Uncle served on the Lex too. I’m going to make a trip to see her.
I was on her in January, '96 on a very cold day when it was reported as about freezing at the Airport that morning but by midday it was uncomfortably warm abord the ship. There was very little open for tour in those days. I'm waiting to go back soon. I loved the days growing up in CC. with it's strong attachment to all the Naval aircraft that cometely covered our skys with carrier fighters, torpedo planes, and dive bombers. Additional fields held four engine transports, PB4Y2 bombers, and PBY/ PBM seaplanes thst did recon or long range bombing and even trial torpedo launches. Yes the sky was always full of Navy planes. With just enough to do what we neded done

I came all the way from Malaysia and visited twice in '12 and '13. Great humongous ship. Love the restored aircraft on deck, sat in the Captain's chair and visited the cinema. Would love to visit again if I have the chance.
Think I was in the bow or front of the ship below deck I hear this ''HAY COME COMHEAR'' I round a corner wear it came from and nothing just a dead end the hairs on the back of my neck stood up never been back …..
Still don't know why we didn't get her... NAS Pensacola was home for aviation training and her home in the 70's and 80's. That was her home.... Yet she sets anchored in a port never called home.... I was aboard her in 89
my grandfather flew a hell diver off the lexington. bomber squadron 19. at leyte gulf he flew off solo to go after a "virgen" ship which turned out to be an ise class battleship which was followed by its sister ship of the same class. he dove at the one in front and broke protocol and descended further then he was supposed to causing extreme g forces. he threw a bomb down their smoke stack killing 25-100. he actually passed out after he pulled up because of the g forces and came to as he was flying past the second battleship, he thought it was hilarious that his tail gunner was shooting this little 30 caliber machine gun at this massive ship, they were so close they could see the whites of the japanese eyes and were too close for the japanese aa to react to my grandfathers plane. he managed to get away. he got the navy cross for that.
I went there two and it was cool but it was scary and I went there with my friends and my family and we went to the beach and a Hotel and, we went to dinner and, I am a vegan!.

I slept on this ship a long time ago for a cub scouts trip and it was so cool!!
Slept & ate on the Lexington with my daughter for a Girl Scout trip in 2002; one of my most cherished memories.
