- We've nearly finished modifying our 2002 Toyota Tacoma, "Baby Yota", into an overlanding rig, but there's just one issue we have to address. Have all the modifications made the truck too slow to get out of its own way? Tommy finds out in this video!

You can't judge a fish for its ability to climb a tree 🤣😝
Actually you can. But just because you can doesn't mean you should. 😂
Dog fish
True
@@oxidizedolivem
Hay fish, ya you over there bet you can’t even climb a tree nerd.
One cannot add bigger tires to a 4 banger automatic transmission truck and keep any kind of acceleration.
It needs to be re-geared.
even a manual. And really the AT gives a bit of benefit from a stop.
Its still like 5 seconds faster to 60 than my '84 22R 4x4 Toyota Pickup was. I once even pulled about a 3000 lb trailer with that old thing. 4th gear and 55 mph from Bozeman to Logan. Great truck! Project Baby Yoda is fantastic!
From Chicago but spent a year in Logan (UT). Wishing I could go back, and now I have a Raptor to make the most of it.
Some lucky bidder is going to have fun with that Tacoma!
I wish I could bid and own that one.
"Lucky bidder"...? All you have to do to be "lucky" is spend the most amount of money. Doesn't seem like there's much luck involved.
@@buckhorncortez Just as long as you can find fault somewhere today,. that, I imagine, makes you happy!
Smile once in a while, you might feel better.
@@buckhorncortez The word luck can be used very metaphorically! I noticed overly religious people dislike the word luck? They need to lighten up, Life is full of mystery! Beyond the known is the knower..
I got my first speeding ticket in one of these going 92 MPH , with the 4 cylinder.
Good that you kept the tire size around 31 - looks perfect on the baby yota - I would probably have gone with a much lighter all-terrain tire. Those heavy mud terrains will just kill the limited power this truck has due to that rotating mass. The truck looks great. BTW.
I remember testing the acceleration of my grandmother's 1973 Buick Centurion 455 - it was six seconds! No wait, that was the mpg.
When is the MPG loop? How much weight have you added to little guy? Enquiring minds want to know.
Other than the power. This little truck is awesome. You guys killed the look for sure. Re-gearing would make it a little better.
I have a 2014 Tacoma with the 2.7 and I always though it was lame and sluggish but y’all really made me love my little 4 banger Yota 😝
My uncle's nephew has a Tacoma I believe from 2014 as well. He likes his ride but he wants the newer ones with the V6 because 159hp is too slow for him lmao. We're in New England and we both have places up in New Hampshire where roads are always uphill and downhill and he doesn't have the power to pass or maintain speed lmao.
@@Tylnorton nice! Yeah I definitely want to upgrade to maybe to a new taco or even one of the same year but I’d want to upgrade to a V6 with a manual, my little 4 banger pulls me through almost any trail here in Southern California but when I’m going a steep grade on or off road I really could use those extra 2 cylinders to make things easier 🤣🤣but otherwise shes 4 bangin and hell raisin
If it’s going to be an off road rig, it don’t need to speed, it needs torque for climbing I would 🤔
Yeah, but it doesn't have much of that either.
Not sure how accurate these figures are, fitting taller tires without changing diff ratios will give poor performance, had a buddy with an old diesel Land Rover on 750x16 tires that accelerated very poorly and gave a wrong speedo reading, put the correct 205x16 tires on and acceleration improved a lot and a correct speedo reading which is a legal requirement anyway!!!
Needs a good ol 22r with manual trans 😂
@Hawk Daddy depends on the build, they are built differently then what tfl intended
@@stephenregister4161 a 22re would be even slower, they make like 115 horsepower
That’s a amazing vehicle for work and play
It'll run circles around my '83 S-10 4x4, and I had the "big" engine (2.8L V6, 110 hp) and a manual (4-speed) transmission. It had an 85 mph speedometer which it could not peg.
I have a 99 Tacoma which was nearly identical to Baby Yota out of the factory other than being older. I added front and rear ARB lockers and 4.56 gears then increased to 32” tires. I skipped the heavy bumpers to keep it nimble. At Missouri altitudes it feels peppy but it’s a dog when I take it into the Colorado mountains. Still love it as a weekday driver and weekend worker/warrior.
I recently bought almost the same truck, ‘02 Prerunner double cap 2.7 as well!! The motor blew out but I’m getting it back in 2 weeks. And this video is making me so excited to get my truck back 😁
I have 2nd gen setup similarly with the soft top and 31's i with a 4 banger, but a 5 speed manual. People always give me crap about its lack of power...until they need a ride somewhere because their car broke down. Toyota 4 banger always gets you there....it just doesn't get you there quickly.....
Great video! I have a 2002 SR5 double cab 4x4. I LOVE my baby pickup. Thank God it a 6 cyl. I'm just learning what my little "Brucie" is capable of. I've taken it over 100 but backed off the pedal for safety.
These trucks are great! I used to have a regular cab, 4 banger. It was fine running around, but couldn't hold highway speed climbing hills. I am curious how much it would slow down trying to climb the Ike.
I had a regular cab, 5sp, 4 banger. Ike was 40 MPH tops, screaming in 3rd gear. Driving interstates it couldn’t keep up with traffic when there were either hills or wind.
@@davidheckart639 so true haha my 87 Ford ranger is the same way. It’s a 2.3L 4x4 regular cab 5 speed standard haha. I still love this little truck lol. I’ll never sell it lol
Old dude in the scion on the phone with his wife: " Honey I think this whipper snapper beside me wants some!"
The wrap on baby yota is perfect!
Love baby Yota, power was never going be the driver of this awesome project, most off-roading enthusiasts is about external/internal accessories then extra power. Portable fridge n swag n throw in toolbox I be wanting this baby Yota👍
Let Paul take it around the track! All you're vehicles should have an official time!
It definitely needs a regear to get some of the torque back
Probably just as slow as my explorer is on 35s with the factory 3.73 gears
Has the speedo been corrected for the new tires?
Im holding out that one day yall will re-gear one of these vehicles to correctly deal with the larger tires. Especially being in the mountains going up hills...
Just got off work at the sawmill. Good timing guys!
I can't say anything, I'm lucky to hit 60 in my Jeep YJ. But anything above that is scary anyway.
4cylinder yj?
@@ojanmoham5796 Yup
I'd take the plywood out the back for daily use
Would’ve been interesting to do this pre-mods to compare now and see how the mods affected performance
Fun video tho
I'd actually really like to have that truck :)
Should’ve tested it uphill too to see if it’ll keep 70ish mph
You have built the best high-school through to college, kid truck ever. I would have killed to have something like Baby Yota When I was in that phase of life.
I'd kill to have it now and I'm in my mid 30s.
Nahh, a hs to college vehicle would be a 20+ year old civic/corolla type car.
@@rogerj412 I had one from 2008-2011. They weren't considered particularly cool or collectible back then though, so I didn't appreciate it. Blew a head gasket at 300k miles and sold it.
@@Mixwell1983 lol kids at my school are driving brand new F250's and Silverado's.
That is such a good looking Yota!! Good job guys👍👍
I think I like it!!! Adequate it right! Gets the job done! Looks good!
That Scion KNEW you were trying to race!!
Lol, I used to do the unknown drag races in my ‘89 with the 22RE at 5000 feet as well; I usually lost.
That Tacoma looks great! Really nice choice in bumpers, lift, wheels and tires. It’s just too bad it’s not an extra cab or Double cab.
Just put a small, fast spooling turbo on it. 5-7 psi that comes in at 2000 rpm. It will be fine
Or just buy the manual transmission version, and install gears to retain tire to gear ratio.
@@NuclearSandwich7 you don’t need a manual it just desperately needs re gearing
@@brandonpurple8938 look up specs. You can get away with much more with a manual before requiring regearing. Plus you avoid as much drivetrain loss. Manual all the way in this application, and it’s not even close.
@@NuclearSandwich7 that’s obvious I’m urging 4.88s on my auto and manuals are geared differently
It was too slow BEFORE the big tires. It's extra slow now.
Bought my son a 1998 single cab 2.7 with 5 speed.....same size tires as Baby Yota......It does not do too bad at all. cruises at 80mph.....but we are also in Phx
You guys have modded a nice, functional small truck into a VW Vanagon Diesel.
take it up cliffhanger 2.0 to find out if its under powered
Great little truck. Just needs a locker in the rear.
Yeah, instead of the winch. I mean, having both would be nice, but still got the priority wrong.
@@plus790 I had a 2004 TRD 4x4 and a 2007 FJ and they were both pretty amazing offroad. That electronic locker made all the difference so many times. Never had to call a tow truck once but was so very close a few times and without it would have been stuck for sure.
@@plus790 the winch looks cool so it's always comes first. Locker is way more useful.
You are right, without the locker he will definitely need the winch.
On a sailboat, when you work to pass another boat that isn't actually paying attention to you, it's called a " brag race". Of course you only tell anyone if you "win"...
Just as much fun in an automobile.
I put the 2.7 in my 1988 4Runner with 30" KM3s tires. Its fast enough to keep up with traffic but I have a 5-speed.
Original engine 3.0 150HP/180 ft torque
Swapped engine 2.7 150HP/177 ft torque
These were designed to be daily drivers, great off road and longevity, not speed machines.
You added weight and resistance(mud tires and lift), Why are you not re gearing it? 4.88 would be great in this truck.
This thing is appearance only. It’s a fashion accessory.
Cool out ways quick in my book. This truck has turned out awesome. Wish I could swing buying this rig on your auction... Maybe next time.
it won't win any drag races but this is probably the best everyday driver truck made, somebody will be driving this truck for a long time to come...
It's purpose-built everyone knows its not gonna be fast at all but thats not the point. Re gear it and an e locker in the rear and you would be suprised what it can handle! Plus the reliabilty out of the 4 cylidner is amazing!
I've got an '01 2.7L 4 cylinder and sometimes i don't even bother trying to pass people on the freeway lol
This reminds me when we were hot rodding in my buddies grandpa's Chevy G-van conversion van... 0-60... Eventually!
It can climb a tree. It just does it slowly. This what you tell yourself, to mitigate the shame of losing to a Sion. LOL
Try the Ike Gauntlet. No trailer, but maybe more of a load in the bed. Nothing crazy but some things you make take camping such as filled water containers and supplies.
Coming from a 1990 4runner 3.slow on 33s to a 06 Tacoma 2.7 on 32s and it’s way faster, my 4runner couldn’t go 60 used a lot of gas but was fun. The 2.7 goes great at 75 so I’m not pissing everything behind me off
Would like to see a true mpg loop of over 100 miles please, i have a 2.7 tacoma would like to know my mpg if i mod it
Fun but last thing you'll be worried about in this little trail hoppers natural habitat is how quick it gets to 60mph
I wanna race your yota with my 2019 automatic tacoma 4 cyl. With patagonia mud tires
Reminds me of the 05 CRV I use to have, similar power haha
The baby is fine off-road as long as you flat-bed it to the location.
The truck is great for my grandfather. He doesn't drive and died 50 years ago.
This truck is powered by the 3RZ engine. In latin America we use that engine on land cruiser prado (j90) 3 doors with manual transmission to increase the power we use a chip and a TRD supercharger that is the best way.
You know I got a trick for you that we used to do in my dad's 1986 Dodge D50 pickup it had the 2.0 4-cylinder engine and it was an automatic we bought it brand-new. from day one we put premium unleaded in it if you didn't run the premium the thing wouldn't even get out of its own way! But as long as you ran premium it would actually move. I had it up to 115 once believe it or not.Try that and also the engine in the Toyota have it tuned for the high elevation sometimes they need to be tuned for that when we moved from California to New Mexico the D50 got really low on power because of the high elevation and we were going to get it tuned but it ended up getting totaled so that's a different story but it was a good truck had it all the way till 1996 10 years of perfect service. The old Dodge we missed it.
I wonder if the speedometer is calibrated for the larger tire size? Not sure if the speedometer was used or the GPS. If the speedometer then calibration matters and the truck is doing better than measured.
Slowest vehicle I drove was my 69 VW bus with a 1300cc engine.. Drove the freeway like 2 times and was super sketchy. Engine was topped out at like 60mph and definately stayed in the slow lane. It was fun putting around town though. You kind of get used to getting passed up by everyone else.
Did it seem like the Scion XB was flooring it? I noticed the lanes merge and that’s usually the biggest reason to drag race. Because if he was going full throttle as well, that gives some good perspective.
I'd like to watch it race the TRX next!
Its got enough power, just that w/ the m/t’s while going up hill it will struggle. Everytime I am on the highway I always use ECT. Once my m/t’s expire I’m deff gonna get ko2’s shouod help, but this truck is capable no problem.
Would love to own that fun little pickup.
I love this truck.
That gearing is great for MPG... but yeah.. those bigger tires are really hurting that poor Taco.. At 70mph my 1999 Outback was at 3700RPMs
Supercharge it !!
Good thing it has stripes, which obviously help make it go faster.
That’s a great truck you don’t need speed, get a v6 tacoma if you want more speed tht 4 banger perfect for what it was built for
@Parker Outdoors I dig what your preaching my man🙏
have you recalibrated the speedo to compensate for the 31 KM3's?
with 0.705 ratio in 4th gear and 4.1 diff gears the 2.7's had, and 31" tires he would be going ~86mph at 2700rpm and he's reporting 75. The stock tire size was 225/75R15 which is 28.3" and would have him going just over 75mph at 2700rpm.
So it sounds to me like he did NOT recalibrate the speedo and that invalidates the testing here.
Really this vehicle needs 4.88's to comfortably run 31" tires, there's no problem at all rolling close to 3k rpm on the highway all day long if you've got clean oil and everything else in decent nick
They use GPS
@@shoveI ///THANK YOU for making my point!
Point A to point B. What? You in a hurry!😄
B-b-b-but it's rad and supercool !
Its freeway cruising rpms are better than my 2nd gen outback! Poor thing struggles above 65-70 now 🤣
wow, the door seals on Baby Yota can really use a change. Can hear so much coming through, granted I know its old, but I feel for the editor with the volume control they had to do.
Regear?. Heck, you could say that about any Tacoma or 4 Runner, new or otherwise. But just for fun, regear then add a Marlin Crawler. That will solve your on road problem and be beastly off road.
Re-gear it to something between 4.88 to 5.29, those tires are still a lot taller than stock and believe it or not the RPM will not be to crazy. It will be a lot punchier in all driving but obviously won't be a top-ender.
What made you want to go with that bumper va the ARB bumper??? Very curious I am trying to decide myself
This could have been an underrated 1st gen tundra with either a 4.0 or 4.7 V8 and 31s and steel bumpers would barely slow it down plus they're barely any bigger than the Tacoma.
A header and snorkel with some tuning would help but it really needs regeared.
Is there an aftermarket turbo you can add to that thing? I'm curious because same 2.7L in the f150's but that's a v6. How does the difference in cylinders change if that motor can accept a turbo. I realize there is a lot more involved (computers, transmission etc.) But if it's possible would like to see a comparison.
budget intake and exhaust would be a nice update to see what gains if any you get
It's the altitude. Once you get down to sea level the Tacoma will be flying at 16 seconds from 0-60.
That taco makes me miss mine I had an 02 single cab sr5 I wish I never sold it mine had a 2.5” bds lift an arb winch bumper 9500lb super winch all pro rock rails skid row engine skid plate all pro tcase skid plate 285/75/r16 super swampers mine was a 2.7 auto
I would love this truck!
That thing needs a turbo
Supercharger! Better for the engine
Supercharger. I think Toyota made those TRD superchargers for those engines.
Hey Good morning Tommy 🌞 How's the 65' F100 coming along? Thanks for the video on the Toyota!!😎
I passed you on I-25 the other day! Got the 3.4L V6 though... 😜
I had a 2nd gen 4runner with the V6 and similar power. I loved that thing but man was it slow. You had to keep your foot buried no matter what so I was lucky to get 15mpg even on the highway
Its fast enough, plus it looks amazing!
Trucks aren’t for going fast. Besides if it did it would be getting 9mpg on high test like the dodge trx
@Hawk Daddy Because those are mall crawlers. Neither of those trucks can fit on half of real trails...
@@shrayesraman5192 If there wasn't a demand for them, they wouldn't be built. Instead, they both sell extremely well, mall crawler or not. This Tacoma is a joke when it comes to power.
@@9-seven What are you talking about? Where did I say there was no demand for them? If they were actually made for off roading then then there would be a lot less demand in fact! They would have a reliable but less powerful engine like a 4runner and the handling of a jeep. But no one is gonna buy that. Everyone wants to show off!
@@shrayesraman5192 Sure, I can agree with that. Showing off might have something to do with it, but the reality is that people want maximum utility in the same package. The TRX and Raptor deliver on multiple fronts: speed, off-road capability, luxury, and general usability as a truck. If people wanted an uncompromising off-roader, they would buy a side-by-side, not a Tacoma, 4Runner, or Jeep.
@@9-seven Yeah. They are all great as a single vehicle that can deliver on multiple fronts like you say. But they don't really excel in anything. They are fast but can be beat by cars half the price. They are off roady sure but not really, and will handily be beat in most situations even desert running by lower priced smaller trucks like a 4runner or jeep. And they are usable as a truck but dont have the towing capacity nor the payload or even the luxury of trucks half the price. So they are like a jack of all trades master of none kind of thing. They are not made for hardcore enthusiasts.
You should do a Gas Milage test, the 4 cylinder should get decent milage.
It won't. You'll get better gas mileage with a full size V8 powered truck. And notice how their test are only on flat ground. Put that gutless motor up a 2% grade and you'll never be able to pass anything without running it to the red line.
Stock is 19mpg highway according to EPA. About the same as a f150 raptor (18mpg) with 3x the power (450hp), 6000 pounds, 35" tires. 15 years of technology makes a big difference.
I wonder if they could add a turbo or supercharger kit to get some extra HP and torque.
That’s actually not bad considering the speedo is off a bit for the highway cruise test. 75-80 is probably more like 83-90.
Toyota used to sell a TRD supercharger for the 1st gens, it would be cool if one could be found for the Taco.
have ya heard of gadgetman groove do it on your ride its awesome power cool mod permanatly changes the aero synamics of your block you definirly be getting around.
You should have done an uphill test on the highway
I think I saw that truck out on diagonal highway a few days
