    Great restoration of a simple but essential tool for every tool box.

    That's a hell of a job you did there. My 10 year old modern Starrett square is very rusty, but still dead accurate. You have inspired me to give it a makeover :)

    Nice job! I was especially impressed with the multiple uses of the sock!!! 😆

      Hahaha yeah, I have a huge bin of socks for use as rags! I never just throw them out. I’m still compelled though to use each one until it’s a grimey black crust. :) Thank you for watching!

    Nice job! I have a bunch of my Father's old tools that I hope to restore ... I am 71, so the tools I have are at least that old HAHA

    That had to be incredibly satisfying! I have a very similar tool, identical except for the manufacturer. Mine wasn't in quite so rough shape, a little crocus cloth on the blade is as far as I took it. but now you've got me thinking... 😉😂

    Nice resto. I'm gonna try to clean up an old Stanley combination square that my dad bought in the 70's. It's not in terrible shape but there's enough rust that the ruler doesn't slide and the set screw doesn't work well. It really just needs de-rusting and some polishing. Sadly I don't have access to a sandblaster so I'll just have to apply old-fashioned elbow grease.

    • @1977np
      @1977np Рік тому

      You don't necessarily need sandblaster. Use wire brush of different sorts instead.

    How did you install the level keeper?

    • @RestoreThis
      @RestoreThis  3 роки тому

      The replacement fit snug enough so I just gently tapped it in, then installed a plug to hold it in and keep it from moving. Thank you for watching!

  • @andrewmiller8182
    @andrewmiller8182 2 роки тому +1

    There should be a spring under the screw that will keep the rule under tension during the time that adjustments are made.

      I got a pack of them off of Amazon. Probably not the best quality, but they work and are close enough to the right size to do the job

    Can you please share what grits you used when polishing the ruler... if you remember?

    • @RestoreThis
      @RestoreThis  3 роки тому +2

      I started out with 200, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500 then finally 3000 grit. It was a lot of sanding but it was worth it!

    • @hiker64
      @hiker64 3 роки тому

      @@RestoreThis - Wow - I'm afraid of using sandpaper and losing the fine etching of the lines and numbers. You seemed to do it with ease. I've seen people use brute force and just sand blast them clean with whatever type of material they use but I don't have that kind of equipment. May just have to experiment. Now I understand why there are so many squares missing the rulers. :)

  • @jasonblume2707

    Nice, alot of guys skimp on the ruler.. would of loved to see how you redid the black number scale on it.. Thanks for sharing!!

    • @RestoreThis
      @RestoreThis  3 роки тому

      Thank you for watching! For the ruler I used black paint and kinda globbed it on.I let it dry a little bit then wiped it gently. I stuck in the crevices and wiped off of the flat polished part.

    I’m working on doing the same and wondering what type of blasting compound you used? Thanks for the great video!

    • @RestoreThis
      @RestoreThis  4 роки тому

      The blasting media I’m using is the 80 grit glass bead from harbor freight. I’m sure there’s better stuff but that’s what I’ve been using since I got the blast cabinet

    I'm working on the same square exceptional job! You are missing the scratch awl though mine still has the scratch awl I was a little too excited about that haha question the title says starrett copy do you know the actual brand?

      Very cool! Sadly I was never able to determine the manufacturer. Not fir lack of trying though. I spent hours looking through google image search results and was never able to find a perfect match. That’s cool that yours has the scratch awl still! Thank you for watching and best of luck on your project!

      I have a couple of the same squares. Mine are Union brand. Purchased by Millers Falls in the late 50s or 60s and still marketed under the Union name until Millers Falls went out of business.

    Bardzo dobra robota. Ładnie wszystko wypolerowałeś i pomalowałeś. Mam pytanie, po prostu ciekawi mnie jedna rzecz, ty te rzeczy sobie zachowujesz czy sprzedajesz? Bo gdybyś zaczął sprzedawać to twoje hobby mogło by się stać źródłem Twoich dochodów, a to zwykle bywa bardzo trudne. A tu masz idealne warunki.

    • @RestoreThis
      @RestoreThis  4 роки тому

      Witam i jak zawsze dziękuję za oglądanie! w odpowiedzi na Twoje pytanie po prostu zachowuję wszystkie te elementy, które przywracam. Zawsze mówię ludziom, ile czasu zajmie wykonanie jednego z tych elementów, musiałbym naliczyć więcej, niż ktokolwiek byłby skłonny zapłacić za jeden z tych przedmiotów! hahahah. Myślałem o zapewnieniu usługi przywracania przedmiotów innych osób, ale na razie wolę po prostu zachować to jako hobby. jeszcze raz dziękuję za nieustające wsparcie przyjaciela!
