In 1984 Willie Hernandez had a crazy statistic - struck out the last batter of the 9th inning 26 appearances in a row. That screwball was his money pitch. If I remember correctly, he only blew 1 save that year. It was a great season to be a Tigers fan. #35&5
His out pitch in 1984 was a screw ball. It broke down & away from right handed hitters. I saw almost every Detroit tiger game that year. What is not mentioned is Aurelio Lopez who we called senor smoke Was his set up man. In 1984 he would pitch the 8th and 9th ending. He definitely deserved it because he never blew a save.
Because of how it is thrown, it's considered an offspeed pitch, rather than a breaking ball. It's movement profile is very similar to Devin Williams Airbender, which is a change-up grip that acts like a screwball of old. I hope this clears up any confusion.

NOT true. He did not strikeout 26 batters in 9th inning in a row to finish inning, thanks.
@fgrsdff then George Kell lied all those years ago.
I was 10 years old in 1984 growing up in a suburb of Detroit(I now live in the city). Willie Hernandez 100% deserved the MVP and Cy Young award.
Me too. Class of 93 GP

He deserved the MVP for that mustache alone.
