- The Nike Alphafly 1 was one of the most eagerly anticipated carbon plate shoes when it was released back in 2020 - and still remains at the top of the list for many runners when it comes to race day.
The combination of a carbon plate with a chunky stack of ZoomX foam, as well as two Air Zoom pods in the forefoot, produced an impressively bouncy ride, providing much-needed energy return and comfort for long-distance efforts.
The third version of one of the world’s most popular race shoes, the Alphafly 3, sees several updates. That includes a wider carbon plate to increase stability, a new midsole design that features fully connected ZoomX foam for a smoother ride, and a revamped AtomKnit upper for better lockdown as well as breathability.
Tom and Nick compare the two super shoes to see which they'd pick for race day.

AF 1 has the most badass look
Loved all 4 pairs of my AF V1, can't wait to run some more miles in the AF V3. Its gonna be magical! That said, I just ran my PB in the VF 3 by 17 minutes in the marathon. It will be tough to choose...
Yes, I am a big fan of the Alphafly V1 and I am keen to find out what the V3 is like. Definitely going to grab a pair soon.

Good review! So true that AF3 is like a hybrid between AF1 and VF3. Bouncy like AF1, "tippy-forward" like VF3--but subtler in both departments. I've been testing AF3, switching between it and VF3 and AF1 for reps at mile to marathon paces. AF1 is the softest, bounciest, fastest, most comfortable, and true-to-size for me (mid-to-forefoot strike, medium arch, tall, high cadence, large feet). My PRs for the 5K, 10K, half, and marathon are in AF1. I was hoping AF3 would work even better since it looks nice, but it's pretty tight in the toes and has less energy return than AF1. I can see AF3 growing on me given the lightness and smoothness. I'm just not sure its comfort and performance will beat AF1 for me. Anyone who loves AF1 and merely likes VF3 probably shouldn't get AF3. Anyone who merely likes AF1 but loves the VF3 and would appreciate a little more bounce and energy return likely should buy AF3 if they don't mind spending the money.
Loved the AF1. Needed to wear plasters over arches of my foot to prevent blistering, but worth it! Ran some great times in those shoes, especially longer distances.
Raced a half marathon in the AF3 for the first time a couple of days ago. More comfortable, no arch issue. PB by nearly 2 mins (80min->78min). No doubt its a great shoe.
For me, definitely choosing AF3 for London Marathon coming up.
I use Vaporfly Next% 2 or Hoka Rocket X2 for shorter races up to 8 mile or so and then the Alphafly 3 for anything 10 mile and over. Love the Alphafly 1 for all the longer training stuff (just got another pair for £95 with 30 miles in them) but totally usurped by AF3 for racing longer now!
Af 1 is my racing shoes, 10k pb.. hope will get 21k pb with it too
The Alphafly 1s just gave me horrible blisters all over my feet. Never ran in a shoe like them - so uncomfortable and damaging to my feet! Got the Saucony Pro 3s after and lved them so much more!
I always get blisters on the arch of my foot whenever i run longer distances in the shoe, i hope the AF3 is better, but i doubt it since some people review that the arch is still a prob even tho its alr been change a bit
The nike lovers will never admit the fatal arch flaw. Got to be a suck up to get on that nike promo train.

In the af2 I felt the arch more. In the 1 while I feel it a little at the beginning then it's fine. Correct size also helps this.
I think it’s random some alphafly 1s had particularly bad arches and others are not so bad
It’s Probably a quality issue
AF V1 was a fight to get on to those pods, as soon as I tired, it's was dreadful....calf killer. AF V2 with the higher drop worked well, no fighting the pods at all, but it was a heavy/bulky shoe after 32km into a race. AF V3 is just everything I liked about the V2, but smoother, lighter, less bulky. It's definitely not as bouncy, but it's so smooth and effortless at MP. And the crazy bounce isn't something I want at the marathon or even half marathon. Just a perfect marathon shoe, for me.
I didn’t like the alphafly as a race shoe originally but it came to life once I was fit enough to be able to run 4min km or quicker and now I love it
I also love the vaporfly 3 and I have the alphafly 3 in proto colour way but haven’t used it yet as I’m waiting for my local half marathon and I the weather has been atrocious so don’t want to ruin it before then
I good point, do a vaporfly vs alphafly. Why would you buy one over the other?

Couldn't wear the Alpha 1 and 2 due to arch issues. Waiting to try the 3. Always sold out so still no luck.
The official launch date is April 4th. The Jan. 4th launch was a limited early release.
It's March 7th in the uk
@darthjohn0 already two launches in my country few months back. First proto color and then the lime green colorways. Both finished within 1 minute
I ripped the insoles out of both my Alphafly 1 and 2s. Saucony endorphin insoles work very nicely in there :)
I have arch issues, and I still wear them.
Nike brought back all the Jordans (which were real basketball shoes at that time), why can't they bring back the Alpha Fly 1?

If the foam and glue didn't age I would have bought 20 pairs and be set for life. Unfortunately in a few years they'll deteriorate.

My alphafly 1s weighed 232g for a UK M8.5, I doubt a M8 weighs 208g

The newly released Meta Speed Sky is lighter than the Alpha Fly… Cheaper than the Alpha Fly Has more foam under foot (only a 5mm drop) than the Alpha Fly + they’ve adjusted the foam to give it “more rebound”. I’d like to hear Nicks rationale for why he’d still go for an Alphafly or Tom acknowledging whilst it is hard to top the Saucony Endorphin Pro 3 the new Meta Speed Sky 3 should at the very least be “enjoyable”. Kieron will still with his natural inclination for vibram five fingers for ultra’s 😉but Mike and Jill should be interesting on this new shoe. The stats say it’s a winner…
We just got the Metaspeed Sky Paris, it’s just 188g in my (Nick) size! Cant wait to get it in it for a session tomorrow

I feel Saucony May have opened the door for ASICS to walk through in this year’s round of updates - the Speed 4 weight gain. I’m backing the Magic Speed 4 to be a preferred choice over the Endorphin Speed for workouts and this Meta Speed Release looks serious competition for any race shoe… they took their time developing it. I look forward to your perspective!

I’ve tried both now. And the sky Paris comes nowhere near the alphafly3 for me… I can’t even describe the sensation of running in the af3, it really propels you forward (it feels awesome and super fast)… whereas the sky Paris didn’t feel the same way at all, it felt to squishy, and didn’t propel me forward at all…
@@victorbmadslund certainly always a strong contingent of folk who just feel that Nike Zoom X squidge and are a done deal. The shape of the carbon plate and the amount of give in the plate for many are the benchmark.
I’ll hazard a guess that Nike either release another racer for Paris or reduce the weight of the AF4. Certainly will if the Adidas Adios Pro 4 comes in around 200g….

Alpha 1 the best . The version 2 was horrible not even close. Done waste your time
The 3s just look like utter sh1te and the 8mm drop means I'm out: forefoot will be too thin. But yea, wouldn't be seen dead in the 3s. Vaseline on my arches in the 1s 😎
