Robbie Kirwan sings a great version of Carrickfergus during a recording session for Headland's 1st CD (May 2007) go to www.mandoharp.com/Headland if you'd like a copy.
Just terrific. I come back here regularly. So many terrific versions of this wonderful song. Yet, here, topped by the sublime Irish whistle, Carrickfergus just rises and rises
I posted earlier, but two weeks ago, I turned 65. My (our) daughter who had a pretty good Celtic band in the past offered to bring the group out of retirement to play few songs at my party. The first song i requested was this. They did an awesome job!! Some Stan Rogers (Old Maui, Field behind the Plow), Spirit of the West (The Crawl), Oysterband, traditional such as Henry Martin, and this song. I was truly blessed. The guests were speechless. So happy it all happened so perfectly.
Well, I have been a fan of Robbie for some time now. My family heritage is Scottish, Irish and French Canadian. So I am steeped in traditional music. But I have never seen a more sincere and authentic version as this. Had my kids (who are Celtic singers themselves) sing this at my 65 birthday. Brought the house down!
I turn 65 soon. We are having an event - family and close friends. One of our daughters, in the past, had a pretty good Celtic band - the house band in a local Celtic pub for a while. A couple of weeks ago, when we decided to do something, over Sunday dinner she offered to resurrect their band and do a few tunes for my birthday. When asked what tunes I wanted, with no hesitation, I said Carrickfergus, and sent her this video to show them how I wanted it done! I am a Scot, but love this song!
I've loved this song for a long time and this is a beautiful rendition. I also listen when there is no solace anywhere else. I also need to get with it and get cds of songs i love; I'm not really computer oriented. I'm not well since my son was murdered. He was 35 yrs old and I thought we had many years left to share many things including music, poetry, books, time. Thanks for this video.
A beautiful version of this sad song. Truly wonderful rendition, if you don't find that your reflecting on life's long road, well you better check yourself cause you may not have a pulse..
Mark - In all these messages we have exchanged, never have I said what a great job you did on the tin whistle. And I am saying it now. And, thanks again for the great gift.
What a sweet straightforward version of a song that can be ruined in so many ways. :( I just had a hankering to hear the tune, so happy I happened on this version.
super voice, and all three musicians kicked ass. simple but totally awsome. my nieghbor in hawaii, originally from Ireland used to walk down the dirt road in the rain 2:am to play and sing this for me, I loved it.
Oh man ,you can not imagine what a sweet voice this man has and the words are great ,,long live Ireland and freedom for all,,,am not irish by the way,,,,,
Still my most favourite version of this song. So sincere. Charolette Church, though she has a fine voice, never - never came to feeling this song like Robbie. Guess you have to be an old guy with some life experience behind you. Buzz Crooks, Winnipeg, Canada
Been listening to as many versions of this as I can...to block the pain I'm going through now. This is the best version so far amongst them all. Thank you
Pure sounding, heartfelt with meaningful feelings, delightful. After eight years I find it is still as good as they day it was cut. G'day to all, stay well and keep those reels rolling.
Absolutely fantastic. Oh, how that lonesome whistle cut into me. For what looked like a casual, offhand rendering of this marvelous song you guys nailed it. Thank you, thank you.
I've listened to all the versions of this song available on UA-cam and this is hands down my favorite although I have to send a nod to Charlotte Church as I discovered the song through her version.
I have NO idea how I randomly came across this video a few years ago. Also, I have no idea why it's taken me this long to comment on it. I've had a rough year. I find myself going to this video all the time just to sit back and relax. It's amazing how his singing with this song is so relaxing to me. I don'rt know what I would do without it. I need to buy a CD!
Not sure where Atlantic, Iowa is, but my wife and I were through Iowa last week on I35 from Kansas City to Minneapolis (family in KC), on our way back to Canada where we live. Iowa reminded me of where I grew up in small town, agricultural southern Saskatchewan. Except we didn't have all the corn - just wheat! We didn't even have a Coke plant. Just two cafe's, farm equipment dealers and a movie theatre! I left because of no future, but most of my family is still there, so it is still home.
C'est un tres bel chanson traditionnel. J'ai la chance d'etre le voisin de Robbie Kirwan et de jouer de la musique souvent avec lui. Merci, de sa part.
Hi Kickatin... Just checking in again. I haven't listened to this for a while, but I always enjoy it when I do!. Hope you are all well. Thank you once again for the CD you sent as a birthday present. Much appreciated. Waiting for spring which is very, very late this year. Still piles of snow in the yard!! But soon... Hey, It's Canada! Take care. Buzz - Winnipeg
I meant that the song so beautifully tells the story of a man who was a 'handsome rover' and is now sick and singing in pubs and having terrible regrets about his life and his inability to get home. I was referencing the plight of the Irish under colonialism. They were unable to get educated and lived in desparate poverty, working in dead end situations which would drive anyone to drink. Situations that deprive people of opportunity produce hopelessness. Out of this comes this gorgeous song
I've been looking around for the original version of this song...meaning that I've heard loads...and this is the best I've heard. Please post this to some big music companies I'm sure at least one will take it on.
Robbie Kirwan, I will blame you for listening to this song. i keep repeating because you - sir, have a wonderful voice and i keep repeating,. The hairs on my neck are up, OMG.
first heard this song on "Boardwalk Empire" and loved it. two years ago I had a visiting nurse come to my house for awhile, she was from Ireland , I played this for her, and she cried....
That was a beautiful version- I've watched about 6 versions tonight, and this touched me the most.Great clear voice and guitar. Less is definately more for Carrickfergus. Thankyou.
If you want to stand on a hill under the infinite expanse of stars and sing "Kumbaya", I suggest you get yerself to the Winnipeg Folk Festival next weekend (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada). We could stand on the Pope's Hill (built as an altar for the Pope when he visited here several years ago). But, we would have to compete with the throngs of bongo players who take over the hill every night until dawn! We camp there each year. Hearing those drummers all night just gives you a sense of peace!
Just terrific. I come back here regularly. So many terrific versions of this wonderful song. Yet, here, topped by the sublime Irish whistle, Carrickfergus just rises and rises
Thanks Arthur. It's my favourite song of Robbie's too.
Robbie Kirwan only person to make me cry. Just Beautiful. Eats Ferry and church coz he is genuine. Feel it. Feel the song. Unbelieveable.

The best version of this beautiful song that I have ever heard, fair play to ye Robbie.
That version is so enjoyable and relaxing to listen to. They did a great job; love it more than all the others.
At last, a beautiful, heart-felt version. Thank you, Robbie
The best version of this beautiful song that I have ever heard

I am a Scot, but love this song!
I just like this version best. It´s such a nice voice. No frills. So melancholic and wistful. Sigh*
Thanks +Margareta Bäckemo. I'll tell him you like it.
Johnny McEvoy's version -- recorded more than fifty years ago -- is better.
Check it out; it's on UA-cam (5 minutes 14 seconds)

Robbie, I think your version of this song is my favorite. I listen to it often.
Very beautiful. It brings to mind that oppressed nations produced wasted lives redeemed briefly, yet eternally by a burst of poetry.
I love this version. Robbie's wonderful Tell him that he broke my heart.
Great Song, and beautiful job Robbie Kirwan. This will remain one of my favorites.
Thanks----jdflud

Can't believe the cameraman's actions when the guy with the whistle starts his part ... The whistle sounds excellent and deserves more coverage ...
Excellent! Very moving rendition of a great song. Thank you.
detta är den bästa versionen, enkel och så fint sjunget.
Absolutely fantastic. Oh, how that lonesome whistle cut into me. For what looked like a casual, offhand rendering of this marvelous song you guys nailed it. Thank you, thank you.
This is one of the best as all the verses are sung. Most versions I hear are cut short verses dropped. Excellent!

@@arthurmarkos5522 10 Years later and I still come back to it. Probably the only UA-cam video I actually have bookmarked.

Been off-line for a bit. This festival sounds great. And we sure need peace. People laugh at Kumbaya but it's a wonderful evocation of human caring.
