I watch all of your videos and find the consistent and technical approach critical to making a buying decision based on facts. They’re also very educational, which draws me in to watch reviews of lenses I’m not particularly interested in. I’d like to see you make more of these direct comparison videos as I find myself flipping back and forth between your different reviews to make my own, far less educated conclusion.
I’d also like to see you review the Sony 20mm F1.8 G.
    Keep them coming!

This is so nice. I wish you'd focused in on the color fringing in both images to show how much more there was on the Samyang vs Sony. It didn't look like much more, but of course if you'd zoomed into the appropriate areas of the photos as I've seen you do before it would have been easier to compare. Thanks a million.

I got the Sony 35mm f1.8 last year. It didn't wow me, but that was mostly because of my evolving favorite focal lengths pulling in wider and longer lengths. The Samyang offers good value and if weight is a consideration for like a travel kit, it looks like a good option.

Usually the problem with Samyang is that in video the autofocus transitions is not so smooth as with native lenses. It's like small steps while focusing. Anyway, this is a good review! Thank you

    Hi Chris,
Do you think the samyang 35mm 1.8 is worth the upgrade if you own the samyang 35mm 2.8? In terms of sharpness mainly. I kinda like the idea of weather sealing and having 1.3 stops more light but love the size of the 2.8 on the Sony A7r body for a nostalgic film sized camera set up.

Hey Christopher, I really enjoy your videos!
Have you thought about a video in which you compare lenses with different levels of sharpness, aberrations and flaring on a 42mp and then a 24mp camera?
Many people will probably buy a full frame camera with 24mp and ask themselves if many things like purple fringing and corner sharpness are still a problem on a lower resolution sensor..
Atleast thats what came to my mind when looking at the Samyang 35 1.8 and its slight purple fringing.
Could help alot of people putting things in context.

I have to agree, especially on the 50mm f1.8 - it gets a lot of bad press but on my a7iii it’s an absolute little gem on a lens! Superb sharpness, a bit of CA (easily corrected manually in lightroom) and not the fastest autofocus (but not too bad and it’s at least accurate) - overall i love it!

    • @kingweddingmedia

dragonfist25 agree on clients (and arguably photographers too if given them side by side) wouldn’t be able to spot which was which. Both great lenses - funnily enough I was filming a wedding today and for the speeches I was tempted to use the 50mm as it was a very tight room and poorly lit, so was initially between the tamron and the 50. We ended up changing the speech arrangement which meant I could film from outside the room so ended up going with the 85. Was tempted by the 50 though!

I've owned the Samyang 24 F2.8 and 35 F2.8 before. Great small little lenses in terms of sharpness, just as the review states. Great value in a small package. Only thing that bugged me with the Samyang lenses (and pretty much any other 3rd party) is the AF noise. Since I mainly shoot video, the little AF clicking noises drive me crazy on 3rd party lenses. You are paying more for the Sony but the AF is always fast, silent and smooth. Great to have options and different budgets as long as the AF noise is not an issue for you.

Your autofocus test at 1:49 is flawed. Samyang is on AFC while the Sony is on AFS if you bottom left on the focus indicator.
Under af-c, the Sony will be even better due to the efficiency of linear motor working primarily on PDAF. Even on a7rii, there’s a noticeable difference.
On afs, it’s based on CDAF.
It makes a difference for spontaneous capture.

And Tamron is 12% owned by Sony, so that might account for them. Sigma would be smart to produce something that sits between the Sony and the Samyang - a bit heavier, slightly more solid build, full weather sealing, and without the Sony's slightly excessive pricetag.

    Hello Christopher,
have you by any chance noticed that this lens is darker than the Sony equivalent one? I made a direct comparison between the two lenses (and also with the Sony ZA 35mm 2.8) and the result was that with the same settings (aperture, shutter speed, and ISO), the samyang was always underexposed by at least -0.3 stops compared to Sony lenses.
I have read other people who also pointed this out, did you noticed it?
Did you have the opportunity to make a simultaneous comparison of the two lenses? Thanks.

The light transmission of as lens (it's T-Stop) is not the same as it's f-Stop...It's often the case that two comparable lenses have slightly different T-Stops at the same f-stop, and therefore one will pass slightly more light than the other.

Replaced Samyang 35 f/2.8 with f/1.8 version, really like it and I would say the size difference is negligible. The lens is super sharp and very nice to use on a7r3. The only thing I don't like about it is something you can see on the photos here, it has quite obvious green-ish tint that has to be calibrated in Lightroom manually, at least right now. Coating seems to be the only thing Samyang didn't learn how to do properly yet. Hoping to record a video comparison of two lenses before selling the 2.8 version.

The Sony was £450 last Monday at (21/9/20) the UK Photography Show.
The button is useful if you have it on all your AF lenses, say 24mm GM and 85/1.8. You can then free up a button on the body, say for eye AF. If you have a lens without the button, say 55/1.8, you still need to duplicate the eye AF button on the body. Looks like the newer lenses are getting the button though. Could be useful on an A7C where you have less custom buttons.
Close focusing, you might want to add a 58mm achromat for the Samyang, a decent one is around £65.

I chose the 35mm Sony because of mixed reports on the Samyang focus and colour accuracy - and I'm glad I did because at f1.8 my pictures are tack sharp, and eyelashes are clearly defined when I zoom in.

    • @Cfyzium

I have Samyaing 35 f/2.8 and Sony 35 f/1.8 on A7RIV. While being pretty good in the center (maybe just a bit worse than Sony), Samyang is clearly way weaker in the corners. The corners and edges beyond APS-C area are weaker even with Sony wide open and it is a disaster compared to it stopped to f/2.8. Samyang 35 f/2.8 corner perfromance improves to levels barely acceptable on A7RIV around f/6.3 but even stopped to f/8-f/11 it is still nowhere close to Sony (and, evidently, the new Samyang).

      @KelvinKamsg 3 роки тому +1

@@Cfyzium I'm unsurprised at that, also makes sense considering compromises made to hit the lower price and compact dimensions.
I've got the 24mm/2.8 and the vignetting never really goes away. Not really complaining since I use it as a cheap and compact convenience lens.

Wasn't very impressed about the Samyang, in its review (probably I didn't see the sharpness well because of the purple fringing), but now it seems quite good, compared to the Sony 1.8, which is a staple 35mm lens, highly popular.

Honestly I’m not so surprised with results and this little SY will find way to my camera bag as soon as it will be available. I was always bit jealous about Canon, they always managed to have a small, reasonably bright 35 in their system and last 35 for R is just so lovable lens! Jealous! Now I have Sony 28/2 which on a paper looks like my best everyday lens ... But is not, it’s ... boring. My Samyang 45 is quick, sharp, accurate, blurrs background nicely, is small and compact but it’s still to 50mm-ish. Many times I was thinking “if You could only by 35 instead 45...” I really think this will be important lens for many Sony users. If only Sigma will not repeat it’s move they made with 85 Art 😀 with... I don’t know... 35? 24? 😇😋 but if they would it definitely wouldn’t carry a sub500 price tag 🏷

Samyang's 85mm f/1.4 adds a yellow tint to photographs, which can be reduced in post but still .... In this comparison of 35mm lenses, I do detect that the Sony's whites look like a more true white than the Samyang's. Does it look that way to you?
