England would have been not only physically but very culturally isolated from the Continent and much the weaker for it and perhaps would have fallen in with the Scandinavians.
@@philipwebb960 Hmmm.....weren't the Saxons from the Continent? And from Denmark? Close enough for Scandinavia. Oh, and by the way, Normans were definitely Scandinavian. Seems they already "fell in" with them. I see the problem more with the French influence. The Plantagenet dynasty was a joke. All they did was murder and connive. It was not a good time for England.
"You were looking after it on behalf of the nation" Then "the nation" should have bought it. The nation has no business "looking after" property it does not own. The Brits' contempt for the rights of property owners baffles me.
At one level, fascinating; at another, frustrating. The presentation had competing interests: from empowering a lost "white queen," to unearthing medieval towers and wine cellars, and all connected to the battle of Hastings and a humble farmer who just recently bought this land--you guys needed three months, not three days!

That was her 1st husband's family property. She lived their until her first husband John died then she was evicted by her lovely mother in law. That is when she returned home to her parents. And that was the reason Elizabeth went to talk to the King, to have that property returned to her and her boys. Haha I was right I just got to the part of video where they said the castle belonged to the Gray family.
This episode contains some very inaccurate (if not flat-out incorrect) historical research. With the possible exception of the Norman tower (which was probably already gone), all the archaeology excavated in this episode was inhabited by the de Ferrers family (related to the de Ferrers of Rutland and Derby, whose forefather fought alongside William the Conqueror in the Norman Conquest). The only thing the Greys had to do with any of this archaeology is that they tore it down and (supposedly) inhabited the brick house standing today, which was barely even mentioned in this episode. The family tree shown at 20:20 confirms the dates don't match up with what the "expert" is saying, and that the Greys had nothing to do with the archaeology uncovered here (beyond destroying it). Furthermore, the town of Groby's official website suggests that neither Elizabeth nor Jane Grey ever even lived in Groby Old Hall, but lived instead at Bradgate Estate (when Jane Grey was executed, all the trees in Bradgate Park were symbolically "beheaded" as well). I strongly suspect this is a prime example of why Mick Aston left the show soon afterwards, citing lower standards of research and quality control. In this case, the "expert" was not a historian, but rather a controversial "historical novelist," whose characterizations of Anne Boleyn and Elizabeth of York have drawn notable criticism from actual historians. This should have been an episode about the rise and fall of the de Ferrers at Groby Castle, not about a Queen-for-Less-Than-A-Fortnight who probably never even lived there (but credit where it's due, the de Ferrers of Rutland were featured prominently in a later episode about Oakham Hall).

History goes on to tell that my first English Wotton (Dr. Thomas Wotton) came to Jamestown , VA. in 1607 with Capt. John Smith , as the first Doctor in America . His descendant (Dr. Thomas J. Wootton) (they added an extra O to the name), was possibly the first Doctor in TX. USA and was one of many of my family members that settled TEXAS along with Stephen F. Austin .
Thanks for uncovering my Kins Home
Is there a way to get that family tree shown on here of the de Ferrars? My husband's geneology goes back to this family...
If only the Saxon infantry at Hastings hadn't taken the bait and gave chase down the hill the world might be a totally different place today.
Was it King Harold that gave the order to give chase.....or was it something that happened without his command???
England would have been not only physically but very culturally isolated from the Continent and much the weaker for it and perhaps would have fallen in with the Scandinavians.
@@philipwebb960 Hmmm.....weren't the Saxons from the Continent? And from Denmark? Close enough for Scandinavia. Oh, and by the way, Normans were definitely Scandinavian. Seems they already "fell in" with them. I see the problem more with the French influence. The Plantagenet dynasty was a joke. All they did was murder and connive. It was not a good time for England.
Do they re-bury the excavated buildings, etc when they're finished with them?
Very parallel to Jadis from Narnia
"In my neck of the woods, two stones are......(suspense) just two stones! hahahahahha!!! so funny
You only get two stones equaling a Norman tower if they are particularly "cunning" stones.
"Just a couple of stones."
The family is I think larger than most think 🌞🎼🕯
What Season and Episode is this one?
"You were looking after it on behalf of the nation"
Then "the nation" should have bought it. The nation has no business "looking after" property it does not own. The Brits' contempt for the rights of property owners baffles me.
Why was the tower taken down?
It is believed to have been "slighted," or torn down, by Henry II during or after The Great Revolt.
I have always wanted to see Lady Jane Greys Mott
😁
Poor guy is going to have a bunch of tourists in his backyard xD Guess it is worth it.
I would love for the TT find a dungeon.
Why only ever three days? Is that a legal or self imposed limitation?
At one level, fascinating; at another, frustrating. The presentation had competing interests: from empowering a lost "white queen," to unearthing medieval towers and wine cellars, and all connected to the battle of Hastings and a humble farmer who just recently bought this land--you guys needed three months, not three days!
Hey Timeline, you guys messed up the title and description again!
Yeah, at least we got the episode they teased us with before, now we know what episode they'll put up soon. Doesn't help me choose what to watch now, but it really doesn't matter as I them all.
Welp the only story I can tell is in high school I had a friend named John Grey :)
Is this Grafton?
Oh dear, they appear to have dug up the old homestead.
So why build the castle tower and then pile up dirt around the bottom third? What’s the point?
oh nooo this is awful, they are my ancestors. I found out on my heritage site, how has this been able to happen historical significant buildings..why on earth would the Greys allow the building once so historically important to fall apart so heartbreaking to see its remains not restored
Prolly ran out of money for the upkeep, the taxes would have been horrendous no doubt.
This should have been an episode about the rise and fall of the de Ferrers at Groby Castle, not about a Queen-for-Less-Than-A-Fortnight who probably never even lived there (but credit where it's due, the de Ferrers of Rutland were featured prominently in a later episode about Oakham Hall).
plenty of archeological digging going on at oak island nova scotia, aledgedly the burial place of 16th and 17th century pirate loot, also rumours of 15th cty templar involvement, unlikely, the structure known as the money pit is about 90 feet deep and has several traps that allow sea water to flood the pit if disturbed, a dangerous dig, several people have been killed trying to excavate the pit, several groups of diggers have gone bankrupt trying to find pirate gold and to explain the construction of the pit and related structures.
The mot is here: North 52°39'50.5" by West 1°13'36.4" (GoogleTube won't let me post it any other way even though I am doing so from Google maps)

I'm disappointed that Timeline, stole an old Time Team Episode, and rebranded it as theirs... Unsubbed... Totally uncalled for... Great episode though... RIP Time Team and Crew that have gone to be with the Ancestors...
Apparently they licensed the show.
David Cadman Agreed!
David Cadman Stole? Timeline legally licensed this and many other Time Team episodes. Why get mad about something that you have no evidence for and just made up yourself? Why make an angry post accusing them of theft if you don’t actually know anything about the situation? Shameful.
In 100 years will they be digging up and cataloging 'late 20th century plastic'?
Release Date: 20 March 2011 (UK)
Why did they close the trench back up if they already uncovered ruins in the 60s?
I hope the current and future owners are not going to fill in all those excavations. How is this information going to be preserved?
It is going to be preserved by filling it in again... there is a reason wherefore you have to dig to find remains, the soil cover is the best preservation against erosion by wind, rain, pollution etc. That is also why they document even the smallest finds so exactly, so that future excavators can square the old findings with their own as if they were still in place.
Geo Phys confirms that Tony's long locks of hair are not at this dig site.
FAROUT !!! 😀
❤❤❤❤
De Ferrers are in my ancestry too wowowo
