  • A pretty groundbreaking scene in the history of Queer television.
In this clip, Jodie -portrayed here by a 29 year old Billy Crystal (Hail Billy Crystal)has a heart to heart with brother Danny (Ted Wass), who has been in denial about his brother's homosexuality. Jodie is not ashamed of his homosexuality. One of the first characters in television history to be out and out gay and not ashamed to admit so to his family. This scene broke barriers.
So despite the often...misrepresentation of gay people by the show, SOAP is one of the FIRST to help with the mainstreaming of homosexuality. To remove the taboo on talking about them, not only as a topic of discussion, but as people with feelings.
Note: In early episodes, Jodie was persuing a sex-change in order to live a "normal life" with his boyfriend. This storyline was dropped, as an LGBT consultant claimed it was too stereotypical and not true to life (though in the 50s- 60s, many gay men did have sex changes to avoid stigmas about their homosexuality. These days we understand that gay men do not wish to be women, and that sexual orientation is separate from the experience of gender- such as in the situation of transgender people).

One of, if not the BEST written, best produced, best acted tv show of all time.

Danny was an adorable himbo, and by the standards of the time he was pretty loving and open and accepting about Jodie's confession---most older brothers of the era would have tried to punch Jodie out, cut him off, stonewall or call him offensive names. I don't think people nowadays understand how radical this was.

The writing leaves much to be desired from a modern standpoint. At the time they had no benchmark for how to write a gay character. You have to mess up to learn how to write a character correctly. The show made a bunch of mistakes with Jodie, but the coming out scene and Jodie winning custody of his child by audience demand are so pure and right. The show isn't perfect, but holy shit it had balls.

Revisiting the series, I realize WHY Jodie wanted the operation: He thought it would be easier being a straight woman than a gay man. He was hoping to do it for his boyfriend who was terrified to come out of the closet because he valued his reputation more than Jodie... However, there is one scene where he does say to his mother Mary that he'd "always felt like a woman..." so not sure but it may be a combination of the two.

Jody wanted the sex change to please his highly secret relationship with pro quarterback Dennis Phillips who was actually played by former US Olympian Bob Seagram who was a track and field star. Dennis who was gay didn’t want the secret getting out and broke up with Jody in the hospital to marry a woman. Jody devastated after the news notices the unattended pill cart in his room (due to an emergency) and takes a mixture of pills to end his life. Fortunately for Jody his roommate an older man named Barney Gerber (Harold Ghould) delivers one of the series most powerful scenes as he talks to Jody on the power and goodness to keep on living no matter what, his heartbreaks are described as Jody just listens. Wow, such a great scene that gives me goosebumps today as I remember the heartfelt speech Barney delivers.... remember this is 1978 or so, Jody Dallas is the first openly gay regular on a TV series so it was uncharted waters for the writers as well as the viewers.... this too is a beautiful scene!

This will always, to me, be a beyond amazing scene! Ted Wass's character here (much like Richard Mulligan's) was overwhelmingly hetero, and neither of them had any frame of reference for the gay community, yet they both had an unshakable, familial love for Crystal's character, which easily won out over their own unintentional ignorance!

I am glad that the writers and producers of Soap realized the mistakes they made with the character of Jodie and changed him. He started out as a minor character who came across as creepy and was used as a punchline. But then they made him into someone who that was a man of morals and principles. One who became headstrong and stood up to others for what he thought was right. And when Carol gave Jodie Baby Wendy and took her from him later out of spite. And then how great it was when the Judge realized that Jodie is truly a loving, caring parent and saw Carol for the despicable human being she was. Jodie went from being a character that the audience hated, laughed at, and ridiculed, to one that became beloved and someone we all ended up rooting for.

Well, hell, later on in the series they just started having his character date women, so maybe the writers just didn't know how to write for a gay character.

This was a parody of a soap opera. Lite'n folks. Jeez. Lucky to have any type of representation in the 80s.

It's a little confusing - he's a gay man on his way to gender reassignment? Sounds like they're mixing two different things.

It's a parody of a soap opera. It's not supposed to be an accurate representation. AND this was 40 years ago, there was no other regular gay character on TV. AND gay men can and do indeed sometimes decide to transition.

it was the 1970s. AIDS had not come here yet and not many knew much about the community and its diverseness.

Yeah, but wasn't it more then that? Didn't he "want" the surgery so that he could legally marry Dennis? He didn't actually want it, or else he would have still had it done even after Dennis broke up with him.

In his 1996 "Therapy for Sexual Impulsivity: The Paraphilias and Paraphilia-Related Disorders," Martin Kafka writes, "Sexual disorders once considered paraphilias (e.g., homosexuality) are now regarded as variants of normal sexuality."
Clinical psychologist James Cantor's 2012 study concludes that homosexuality is unrelated to the paraphilias.
Regarding the APA's removal of homosexuality from the DSM in 1973, "threats and intimidation from the gay lobby" is conspiracy-theory twaddle.

What does the study consist of..? I mean, by what criteria do they determine that homosexuality is nothing like other paraphilias? (Sincerelycurious)

It doesn't really make logic sense for his character to have a sex change. Gay men don't just up & have sex changed. Transponders do. There is a difference. If Jodie's boyfriend likes men & is a closet gay, then after Jodie (who currently is male) becomes a woman, "gay" is no longer in the equation.

    "Who cares what Kafka says?"
You should, since it contradicts your assertion with actual researched findings.
"He's purely voicing an opinion, and not one based on any evidence."
He is a doctor (psychiatrist) and a member of the subworkings group for the DSM-5.
"Just saying "study" doesn't cut it."
Just how does your assertion trump the convergent conclusions of all mainstream medical and mental health organizations?

The only thing I didn't like about this show was the fact that later he has a kid. Like, no true gay man would have sex with a woman.

And, of course, the force the heteronomative narrative by putting Jody in a sexually romantic relationship with a woman and making him a father.
