I enjoy my Mamba. All multi-cannons and a huge laser. Just run in raining bullets then boost away. Not the most effective, but i think it's the coolest looking.
Another Vulture pilot here (well, ex-Vulture pilot...haven't logged into the game in years now), and I remember the good old pre-engineering days, when I could dunk on FDLs and Anacondas in PvP all day with my little Vulture. The one thing that gives the FDL its ridiculous OP-ness in combat after engineering is the number of utility slots; give the Vulture one or two extra, and you'll find that it suddenly jumps up to the big leagues.
Before doing the Federal and Imperial grind, I found that the Anaconda was very nice for large ship combat. After getting a Corvette, I switched it over to a long-range jumper, but having 7 hardpoints made it fun to experiment with different weapon options.
I prefer Conda over Vette. Vette has issues with convergence using fixed weapon loadouts, Conda does not. My Pacifier Conda can put out more damage than any loadout the Vette can produce. I have both, and use the constantly. I have extensively tested this (i have probably spent 6 or 7 billion swapping parts and so many hours engineering the 2 for practical weapons applications tests it's insane). Between the 2 it comes down to personal preference. They both have pro's and con's to each other, neither is really "better" when it comes to PvE combat.
Really wish they would make the small fighters like the eagle really good if you have the skill to fly them well. Buff the speed and manuverability so you can stick in blind spots of larger ships.
In medium size i tried fas, chieftain, challenger, fdl, python, krait mk2 and to be honest i went back to chieftain, fas was good but the hardpoint placement is worse. Might give another shot to fdl but i f-ing hate ships with not centered view.
Are the Cyto's really that good? I mean they have next to zero use against hull. Wouldn't it be better with Pules/Burst with Phasing as they can still hurt the Hull? (genuine question)
@@soldier72 3 small bursts/pulses don't do much damage. Phasing lets a small fraction of that damage go through shields untill they're down. Cytos do extreme damage against shields at extremely low range. But since you start your fight with the shield killing, getting to that low range is no problem. Most of the times a few seconds of cyto pew pew suffices to kill the shield even before an NPC ship can boost away
The Krait MKII is my Go-to, 'cause I prefer Large Weapons the most. And it's Hardpoint Placement. 4:42 the reason I never liked the Clipper was 'cause of how far apart the Hardpoints were, and I was not going to learn to aim with the hardpoints placed asymmetrically (like, the right side having all Fixed, and the left having all Gimballed)
I love these videos! The combination of comedy, factual awesomeness and squeaky toy that makes my dog goes nuts every time is just perfect :). Keep it up chap
Great list. I learned combat in the vulture. I loved that ship. Mostly because back in the day it took me 4,975 HOURS OF GRINDING TO ACTUALLY GET IT. But I digress. Now I choose the Python. Kick ass name. Python. Awesome. Versatile, too. Robigo $2M/ minute to combat in one quick…. Well…. quick in ED terms, switcharoo.
Maybe worth mentioning the "cheap" boost on the Krait Mk2? Boosting only drains the PDist by a couple of bars so it's ready to go again faster than any (?) other ship in the game. If you're doing massacre missions, or causing mayhem at a tourist beacon, it's much easier to chase your targets in a Krait than any other ship.
I prefer mining with corvette, i never get the timing to turn with the cutter and end hitting my big butt on the asteroids! But cutter is horrible to turn, don't know how to fight with it without using turrets!
An honest review. A cutter with around 10k shield, that is actually much more since the value is given at 0 pips, at enough speed to dodge torpedoes easily independenlty of people liking or not, is the king of large ships . As for the rest, the fdl continues to be the more effective "dogfighter" due to the flight model and how combat was framed in elite. The difference to others is not as big as many make it be tho.
Totally TOTALLY agree about the Vette. Have waxed NUMEROUS Vettes in both my Furry, and my Clipper. The Furry by Y-Axis circle strafing out of it's firing arcs, and taking a longer time about it with the Clipper by using shoot and scoot (bloody fast, my Clipper!)
Sadly I dont really think It's going to change anything. It'll be another copy paste. Elite lack "rock-paper-scissors game" and variety of tactics. It is always about more stats
Actually started playing again, since last year. It was the perfect pandemic game lol... Krait Mk II with all handprints Overcharged multicannons w/ incendiary rounds is my go to. All firing, Looks amazing from the cockpit!
the usual method would be to travel to a location you wanna fight and have your combatship(s) sent there. Far easier this way. Even if we are talking about a Combat-Krait.
@@zacksstuff flying a ship that is not designed to cross distances over distances costs a lot more time. At least if you organize it properly. Say you order it sent and then go and grab dinner or walk the dog or something. And the creditcost is peanuts, unless you have a Corvette sent to Colonia or something ^^ But in such a case doing it manually instead is probably to much to handle for your sanity so even then you better pay. But hey. You do you. Me personally i dont factor in jumprange and fuelcapacity in judging a combat ship at all for the reason that i dont jump with them ever, anyways. And now that i have everything tugged away on my Carrier there is even less reason to do that.
@@joethesheep4675 with 32 ly of range, it's entirely reasonable to fly it places. That's not far off from what my Hauler taxi gets. And I didn't have to sacrifice much in the way of firepower or armor to get there.
@@zacksstuff yeah. But where do you get with only 32lys range? I mean that would be lucky circumstances if a good spot where to be found in that range around your homestation. Usually its much further and then you run into problems like: "Oh. Now i need a fuelscoop or an additional fuel tank on my combatship to even get there." and then you are fighting with a less effective ship because it got "travelequipment" on board instead of something useful or you order according parts to be sent after you, in that case you could have sent the entire ship to begin with. Yeah.... doesnt strike me as being a good course of action. Just organize properly and you got 0 wait time. My travelingships are all above 60LYs jumprange. Even if you go only 100LYs you will be much much faster (2 jumps instead of 5-6) just sending in the guns (if you got some alternative program to do while your ship(s) is on the way, ofc).
Yeah I always kept a field maintenance unit just to fix the canopy, it blew out more than a teenager with unlimited internet access, to steal a joke lol.
Well I would disagree with the corvette being last I use it for pve pirate hunting and combat zones and I use my Dangerous ranked pilot in a fighter to chase after those pesky runners or to fight multiple ships at the same time. Also the jump range on my almost fully engineered heavily armored and pretty decent shielding at 1200 which is also fully loaded all slots filled and I get 30plus ly which isn’t bad at all for heavily armed my vette is. Good video non the less though love your content.
You hurt me yamiks lol. As a pilot who has used both the Cutter and the Corvette (non engineered because i aint got the time for that lol) the 2 huge hardpoints of the corvette slotted with plasma accelerators slaps beautifully and slotting pulse lazers in every other slot allows for a reliable weapon with little heat build up or energy drain at least to the corvettes systems. After 2 years flying just that even with the lack of speed the accelerators more than make up for that just due to the extreme range you can hit a target with. If any targets shields go down and they start to run i simply target their engines. If they manuevure that just means they stay in range for me longer. To hit em. (May or may not have accidentally killed anacondas at 50 percent hull because i placed both rounds of the accelerator into its reactor from the right angle lol). Also i usually have the fed fighter with multi gun to allow for an additional source of kinnectic asside from my plasma accelerator. May not be the best build for pvp right now as most pvp players engineer the hell outa there ships but this comming year i plan on getting her fit for the long hall in the fight. I do agree though that the chieftan python and *pukes a little* fler de lance are amazing ships for this list. Surprised the vulture wasnt on the list as that bugger can go die in a hole with a good pilot any large ship in pvp or if the AI is feeling exceptional that day facing it in a large ship in pve is frustrating lol.
My list: 1. Chieftain 2. Vulture 3. FDL 4. FAS 5. Challenger (6. Corvette) (7. Krait) Yeah fdl on 3rd. Think i can fly it halfdecend but there is just so much annoying shit going on with the fdl. Offcenterseat, strut in my face, c4-slot is kinda awkwardly placed, optional slots like a small ship. Etc etc. I recognize its, technicalky a good ship i just never enjoy flying it.
I don't know what you mean about the corvette being slow its fun watching your victim run away while you boost into ramming speed and watch them explode failing to get away from your chungos of a ship.
I have an unengineered FDL, I am still new to the game. Currently grinding to get the cutter. Ive been super happy with the FDL but I learned must of the game in transport ships which this ship is the complete opposite in every way lol. The only problem I have with the FDL is its heat management. Maybe I am doing something wrong but I get like 3 shots off before my computer is warning me about heat.
I really love killing Anacondas. The fire breaking out all over it's hull is just so satisfying, along with the impressive BOOM. My favourite killer being the FDL, followed by the Krait Mk 2 and then only the Corvette. Talking of grinding. I have a big hole in my fleet; no ships from the Empire.
I can’t go into stats and don’t have years of experience, but the ships I have the most fun fighting in are the corvette, type 10, anaconda, krait 2, challenger, mamba, and courier.
I really need to go back to Elite. I had just bought a Corvette just before Odyssey came out and I haven't even flown the damn thing. I've logged in a couple times since... But just keep jumping into my Anaconda. Really should start equipping the Vette but... *knife sharpening noises*
Vulture can handle 2-3 fdls gankin for up to 5 min if you know what u doin (and maybe if the fdls dont know what they doin) ;) Glad u gave it a mention at the end cos its the most fun to fly ship in all of ED. Only thing i'd change in your list wld be the Cutter and FDL. A FDL or even a Chief can easy beat a Cutter 1v1 and everything can wake after loosing shield so no excuse there.
Hah, I still love your vids even after all these years! ED is still one of my go to games when I haven't played it in a while due to burn out after 4k hours invested. For new peeps, I still follow the ED chat on Dischord and to them the game is still livid and relevant. I went so far as to equip G2 gogs, dual Gladiator sticks and a YawVr chair, which made the game purely epic. I have virtually two of every good ship in the game, however outfitted differently for combat. Each one has its quirks and strengths. Your unique outlook brings a much needed smile to my face, Kudos and keep up the great humor!
I’m actually in the process of putting together a ground assault hauler XD All it needs is a dumbfire rocket launcher with high ammo cap and multiservos, it can boost out of harm’s way with ease (672m/s). Used exclusively for Odyssey missions as a quick transport capable of raining rockets on scavs when I don’t feel like messing with them on foot.
Say what you will about the Clipper but I've always loved it, it is FUN to fly. Would have used it a lot more had it only been a teensy bit smaller so it could fit on medium pads.
@@Motoboo_Marine u cant use rails or PAs at all on the clipper, so yeah gimballs or turrets are good the only thing the clipper is good for is gimballed frags with 600 speed
I wish they bumped up the power of the Corvette. It is such a great ship, but is eclipsed by the cutter with its versatility. It’s the best mining ship, combat ship, looks decent, and all around is a nice thing to have. The Corvette takes just as long to get to, is good for combat, but can’t outrun Xeno swarms… can’t jump from a single planet to another, and god be with you if you have a planet with more than 0.5g because you’re gonna slam into the ground so hard. While it’s by far the best looking ship, it just can’t compete unless it’s modified and engineered perfectly, and there’s no other players around.
I guess I agree with you. If we we consider all ships in this game pound per pound in their combat capabilities, even today I guess Vulture is the champ.... And, if they would actually improve few things, or lets simply keep as it is with Engineered power plant a size 5 and just improve its speed, gets me wondering if it wouldn't be capable of getting into your top 5
1. Cutter 2. FDL 3. Mamba 4. Krait Phantom. Reverski, I mean :P 5. Python, krait MK2, FAS. They can fight with specific builds of ships in higher rank and with the same or higher pilot skill. Otherwise - they suck.
Totally agree about the Chieftain - When it was first released, a UA-camr called "Chaoswulff" (Whatever happened to him?) did a review of it and took it for a test run in a Haz Rez. It had no upgrades (All E rated except for the weapons!) and performed so well It became my go to ship for combat missions . . . . . never tried the Challenger or Crusader though . . . .
The Crusader can have a Ship-launched Fighter bay (and in Odyssey is the smallest ship with the 4th multi-crew seat) Whereas the Challenger is simply the tankier of the three with 1L 3M 3S hardpoints
Sorry, but the Chieftain looks like the box the Clipper came in. Not that it matters. You could put me in the most capable, well-spec'd boat imaginable and an NPC in a Cobra would still send me to the rebuy screen. In fact, I had to rebuy a Chieftain because somebody told me it was the perfect "can't lose" fighter for learning combat.
Am I doing something wrong? My mamba even with maxed out thrusters (non eng) my asp exp is faster and more maneuverable than it 🤷♂️. I'd really like to find a fast nimble ship that gives good damage and has decent shields and I havent found that ship yet.
In terms of what ships I like to fly the most, then my list is as follows: #1 Federal Corvette #2 Federal Gunship #3 Federal Assault Ship #4 Federal Drop Ship #5 Vulture *honourable mention #6 Federal Eagle
As I'm not a full-time player of Elite, for now I decided to keep enjoying smaller ships. In that situation, Viper MKIII is really fun to play, even if it suffers from low jump range and fuel tank, it acts very well in combat. It's actually still holding me from taking a Vulture. Vulture's design is really cool though
I made the jump from the Mk3 to the Vulture, and I love it. The viper will always have a special place in my heart, but the Vulture will tear through people with the class 3 hardpoints.
@@echo3-770 Yep, I know it's a really cool ship. What stops me the most is actually the grinding to engineer it, for now I only have good-enough engineered Viper Mk3 and DBX

5: Chieftain
The Mamba. So much fun to pilot and wonderfuly efficient if it suits your style.
Seriously they just need to nerf boosters already
Before doing the Federal and Imperial grind, I found that the Anaconda was very nice for large ship combat. After getting a Corvette, I switched it over to a long-range jumper, but having 7 hardpoints made it fun to experiment with different weapon options.
Conda actually has 8 hardpoints
2 small, 2 medium, 3 large, 1 huge.
I was surprised myself when i build my utterly useless Plasmaconda a while ago.
@@browski7655 You're right, it is 8.
Amazing description of the FDL
The only thing I disagree with is that I tend to find a much bigger ratio of furries flying the cutter instead 🤣
"black belt paraplegic" love it
Imagine playing pvp
Dude I love your videos. Humor with facts .
The chieftan my gaint slayer! 3x cytoscrambler's, 2x pacifier frag-cannon's and packhound.
I got allmost the same just with a corrosive MC instead of the pack hounds.
So basically i copied D2EAs Blunderbuss^^
Not gona lie the corvette and the mamba are my vavorite fighting ships due to the hardpoint arrangemant and class.
The Krait MKII is my Go-to, 'cause I prefer Large Weapons the most. And it's Hardpoint Placement.
4:42 the reason I never liked the Clipper was 'cause of how far apart the Hardpoints were, and I was not going to learn to aim with the hardpoints placed asymmetrically (like, the right side having all Fixed, and the left having all Gimballed)
my list:
(assume full engineering)
PVE:
1-Corvette
2-Cutter
3-Anaconda
4-FDL
5-Python
PVP:
1-FDL
2-Krait Mk2
3-Chieftan
4-Mamba
5-Cutter
Having done the grind for both, I prefer Corvette over Cutter for anything except Mining
I prefer mining with corvette, i never get the timing to turn with the cutter and end hitting my big butt on the asteroids! But cutter is horrible to turn, don't know how to fight with it without using turrets!
I got the Chieftain early on which has made transitioning into the Krait MK2 hard. Feels very sluggish in comparison.
Transitioned from FDL to Cutter, ask your questions :p
Man this game needs more ships.
Sadly I dont really think It's going to change anything. It'll be another copy paste. Elite lack "rock-paper-scissors game" and variety of tactics. It is always about more stats
“And I would die happy if it sat on my face”
Spot the man of culture.
Dude you made my day, so funny.
4:45 so true, so painfully and hurtfully true.
Actually started playing again, since last year. It was the perfect pandemic game lol... Krait Mk II with all handprints Overcharged multicannons w/ incendiary rounds is my go to. All firing, Looks amazing from the cockpit!
I love my Krait for combat. Kicks ass, and actually has a bit of jump range (32ly) so I don't completely hate flying it to combat places.
the usual method would be to travel to a location you wanna fight and have your combatship(s) sent there. Far easier this way. Even if we are talking about a Combat-Krait.
@@joethesheep4675 takes time and costs credits. I'd rather just fly there.
Such cute intro, a million percent glad you've blown up so
I thought you did this one months ago, yamiks.
Has something changed with the nerfs?
i love the krait mk2 :) i like this little fighterbay for 2extra lasers flying on their own.
basicly all of the Chieftains sisterships are dam good.... and you get that gunboat ffeling from them that is just "Chefs kiss"
The only issue I found with the chieftain is that the canopy is jutting out like a sore thumb
Plasma Vulture!!!
Cutter PVE is all about reverse and shields.
XD
My list:
1. Chieftain
2. Vulture
3. FDL
4. FAS
5. Challenger
(6. Corvette)
(7. Krait)
Yeah fdl on 3rd.
Have been having issues with my conda keeping up with smaller ships so I'll just fighter it
I have an unengineered FDL, I am still new to the game. Currently grinding to get the cutter. Ive been super happy with the FDL but I learned must of the game in transport ships which this ship is the complete opposite in every way lol. The only problem I have with the FDL is its heat management. Maybe I am doing something wrong but I get like 3 shots off before my computer is warning me about heat.
did u engeneer it? bc it has good heat managment imo
Mamba became my favourite combat ship after i got one.
There was a thing at 1:01-1:02 I don't know what though It appeared for like 1 or 2 frames
"...and I could die happy if it sat on my face". Man's got jokes lol
Vulture can handle 2-3 fdls gankin for up to 5 min if you know what u doin (and maybe if the fdls dont know what they doin) ;)
Glad u gave it a mention at the end cos its the most fun to fly ship in all of ED.
Only thing i'd change in your list wld be the Cutter and FDL. A FDL or even a Chief can easy beat a Cutter 1v1 and everything can wake after loosing shield so no excuse there.
yay, vulture! still fly it if I want to have fun in combat. great ship.
"You came to the wrong place, but I am going to tell you anyhow." - Such a pungent
I’m actually in the process of putting together a ground assault hauler XD
All it needs is a dumbfire rocket launcher with high ammo cap and multiservos, it can boost out of harm’s way with ease (672m/s). Used exclusively for Odyssey missions as a quick transport capable of raining rockets on scavs when I don’t feel like messing with them on foot.
Used adv missile racks to get extra ammo with no downside
1:20 for a second there I thought it was an Asp Scout.
Nothing brings more joy to ones heart than annihilating s sidewinder with a corvette
Say what you will about the Clipper but I've always loved it, it is FUN to fly. Would have used it a lot more had it only been a teensy bit smaller so it could fit on medium pads.
hardpoint placement is not good for pvp
@@tjc2478 Very good hit and run PvP & PvE piracy with the right build. But, full combat? I wouldn't use it.
It's really fun to fly, the hardpoint placement just sucks. I use one as a support vessel with healy beams
@@Motoboo_Marine u cant use rails or PAs at all on the clipper, so yeah gimballs or turrets are good the only thing the clipper is good for is gimballed frags with 600 speed
I just found out they made X Rebirth in VR with touch controls all the way back in 2017 and i mean thats full ship, stations and on foot vr. wtf elite
In what universe does the cutter have maneuverability in spades? Even with class A dirty drag drives its still like flying a skyscraper taped to brick
Sure Yamiks says furry like it's a bad thing but we all know you have a hard spot for horses boyo. =p
Has gimballed C4 weapons on the Corvette and wonders about its relatively bad performance...
I can't be bothered to suffer through the rank grind for the cutter, but I have the rest and love them all.
combat pve:
1 corvette
2 vulture
3 fdl/kraite mk2
atixeno
1 cutter
2 krait mk2
3 Challenger
pvp
1 Courier - fast legs can`t be beaten
Ive been using the challenger for combat and if you outfit it right its actually not bad at all
1. Cutter
2. FDL
3. Mamba
4. Krait Phantom. Reverski, I mean :P
5. Python, krait MK2, FAS. They can fight with specific builds of ships in higher rank and with the same or higher pilot skill. Otherwise - they suck.
You can also slap SLF hangar on Krait
I love how u sound like a nord in skyrim I just love it lmao
Sorry, but the Chieftain looks like the box the Clipper came in. Not that it matters. You could put me in the most capable, well-spec'd boat imaginable and an NPC in a Cobra would still send me to the rebuy screen. In fact, I had to rebuy a Chieftain because somebody told me it was the perfect "can't lose" fighter for learning combat.
No Armstrong moment. Kind of made me sad. lol
Am I doing something wrong? My mamba even with maxed out thrusters (non eng) my asp exp is faster and more maneuverable than it 🤷♂️. I'd really like to find a fast nimble ship that gives good damage and has decent shields and I havent found that ship yet.
That' s the tutorial I was looking for.

The Vulture will get you in close and allow you to stay close. If you're a good pilot.
@@stevenboughner7255 Decided to get one, now I only have to engineer it... ugh
Hei guys i'm here to ask you an info. Do the frontier fix the fps problem? i have only a 1060 and it was ok with horizon but odyssey for what i understood would be really bad with my spec. do u suggest me to buy it now or wait?
What about the anaconda? Im still shocked at The kills ive bagged with the damn thing.
