Thank you! Excellent and informative. I am looking for videos to demonstrate to a friend that pruning does not mean leaving a bare stump. You show in detail which branches to cut, how to cut, and the finished product - a still beautiful, natural looking tree. Well done!

The real reason is if you don’t cut the lower branches it’s tough to cut around without occasionally getting clobbered by a branch on your tractor. If have all the trees on my property limbed up about 8’. I can cut the lawn much faster and not have to worry about getting injured. I noticed that my trees have grown like crazy since I limbed them up as well. It’s a big job to do. I cut the branches, drag them into the woods and once I have a lot rent a chipper.

The Power Companies really do a hack-job on the trees. Like in the video, but there is nothing you can do.

There's some good information in this video but there's some questions raised by it as well
In many places that supports the myth that removal cuts are better than reduction cuts and that reduction cuts are improper
At 3:00 a reduced branch is taken back to the trunk, taking part of the collar with it
at 4:50 again a flush cut is demonstrated as the proper cut
Nowhere in the video is the primary rule of pruning stated
That it is the size of the wound that matters the most
and that Branches should be retained and reduced if removing them would create an excessive wound
Which is often defined as exceeding 4 inches
At 6:50 a very large branch is removed using a single flush cut instead of the three-part cut that was demonstrated earlier
This is not safe for the tree and not safe for the tree cutter
Perhaps the most questionable statement in the entire video is that pruning mature trees is done to the same guidelines as pruning small trees
There is no science or common sense to support this dubious statement
The objective with young trees is typically to push outward growth
The objective with mature trees is often to retain interior growth and good structure and Health and minimize risk
The US national standard on tree pruning requires that the objective be established before work takes place
This video is substandard because the objective is never established and specifications are not communicated
The opening statement, "Flowering and shade trees in the landscape require periodic pruning to control size and shape..." fits the aggressive and unrealistic tone demonstrated throughout. Back to the drawing board, UK.
Respect the natural form of the tree, and its contributions!

The information about topping trees is not true topping trees versus cutting them down what do you think would be better it's a no-brainer if you top a tree at least it's going to be there for a while and you can enjoy it and protect your house etc. shade trees grow fine under power lines Etc

*Communities loosing super long lived Ash trees to Emerald Ash Borer (From Canada down to Panama, and everywhere in between), need to watch this video.* _Otherwise many Municipalities thinking original urban forest problem after replacing Diseased Elms, was planting too many Ash trees, and second planting too many Honey Locust._ Need to know fact that, 3/4 more Maples & Lindens were planted as replacements, than Ash & Locust combined. While monoculture plantings of any species is poor decision, even for aesthetic reasons. Top problem when replacing Elms over last 50 years was first...not installing trees at root flare level with surrounding grade (Planting too deep). And second, not formatively pruning replacements for good structure. Which is required over any trees first 15-20 years. Even though many assume replacing Elms with fast growing Silver Maple was second biggest problem. When fact was, Silver Maple species needed structural pruning the most when still young. That is why great majority had not survived past 60 years, needing removal after multi-stemmed trees became publically dangerous. *CAUTION: 99% of todays Nursery trees arrive with root flares already too deep in rootballs.* _So installing rootball level with surrounding grade, no longer applicable since Nursery workers fail to remove extra soil burying root crown before excavating from field._ FUNNY FACT: Facing todays urban conditions and outdated Arboricultural pruning practices...one would have more success replanting with superior Ash species and temporarily protecting from EAB, than replanting with Maple, Linden, or even Oak!
