I just got a Faxon barrel from Optics planet and I swear it's a used barrel. Grease on the instructions paper, grease on the plastic bag the barrel comes in and no head space check paint marks.

If the bore is good and tight it should shoot well. I would shoot it and see what you got.go from there. If it doesn't hold 1.5" or better. Let me know.
@@LUKE--zy8un yes there is testing of barrels, this barrel has been hpt proofed with an m197 cartridge and then mpi'd after. It's VERY common in mil spec 5.56 barrels(ie colt, bcm, ect). Just got my BA barrel for my AR10 build a few days ago. It was almost a spot on match regarding receiving condition. A fair amount of surface rust. We'll have to see how it shoots once assembled.
I’ve had nothing but amazing results from them. Don’t care what the inside looks like, just the target. I would reach out and ask them about it but shoot it first and see what happens there. Their reputation is very solid.

I called the manufacturer and ended up sending it back to have them to look at. These $50.00 bore scopes are really nice. I'm thinking about getting another one to attach to my phone so I can use it whenever I'm looking to purchase something.
Three years after the start of this topic, I just received a fluted 20" .308 barrel from Ballistic. Believe me they have not improved on rust prevention or on tool marks. The barrel has deep reamer marks on the lands and very deep rotating reamer marks in the grooves. After receiving the barrel, I ran a clean dry patch through, and it came out with black carbon and a red rust looking tint. I used Hoppe's and a nylon bore brush to clean it enough for scoping. The bore is dark with what appears to be rust, the circular reamer feed lines are the roughest I have found in any barrel I have scoped so far. Yes, the barrel may shoot accurately but rough barrels tend to foul, and accuracy drops off quickly. I sent the scope pictures to ballistic and basically was told to go pound sand. They said it didn't look like rust and suggested it was dried oil or copper from test firing, it's neither because Hoppe's and a bore brush do not remove the red colored stains.
I'll trade ya, got a 300 aac barrel from BA that won't headspace and for 3 weeks I've been wating on a ups label to send it back. their customer service is horrible, even said its IMPOSSIBLE fir that barrel to be wrong. Won't close on the go gauge, and yes the bolt is completely stripped as well were the other 2 bolts I tried.
I have been using B.A. barrels for many years now and I don't have a single rifle that won't shoot sub MOA or better. All of them are the Premium Hanson SS in 223 Wyllde in various lengths. Never broken one in just assembled and shot so you may be overthinking the whole accuracy thing unless you just got a bad barrel.
Have you reached out to Clint or anyone at Ballistic Advantage? Might want to do that before continuing on with the series so they can have a chance to get you fixed up.

I have a performance series barrel and never scoped it and don't care to but I can say my ballistic advantage is more accurate then I can shoot and is one of my favorite features on my ar
@@kotaboy32 I just got one of their barrels that looks worse than yours after cleaning, and was told by ballistic advantage that the black I was seeing is QPQ. I own 4 other QPQ barrels from them and the others are all flawless. I'll send it to you if you want to take a look with your borescope.
@TheMetalGuy852 mine came packaged in black bubble wrap with two stickers(one BA, and one p65warnings) holding it closed around a sealed plastic bag enclosing the barrel. I'd love for him to check the bore on mine on video, since they told me it's just QPQ I'm seeing, not pitting.
I wonder if the tooling/button that cut this one was previously used to cut a carbon barrel causing it to be cross contaminated. That would explain the rust. Kind of like grinding stainless with a grinding wheel that was used on carbon will make stainless rust. Even a carbon steel wire brush will make stainless rust
You'd probably right, it's so common on small batch work with non ferrous metals. That golden rainbow ish color looks like the titanium dioxide coating on the rifling button
Oooh. I just bought one of these. First swab I ran down my barrel came out with some carbon and rust. I think they test them all and don't clean them afterward.
All my new AR barrels I clean with JB bore paste and then fire-lap with David Tubbs Final finish. It takes care of the copper/carbon and smooths the tooling marks out.
My premium fluted looked the same, sucks to by a barrel then spend hours getting it cleaned up. I had to use JB bore compound to get it decent. Never buying a BA barrel again. Much better offerings at the price range of the BA premium. Also recommend everyone get a bore scope!
Did the barrel come direct from BA or from a retailer? I'm sure you mentioned previously however I can't remember and don't have time to go back through all of the videos on this build. I see BA has stepped in here offering to take care of it. BA makes some nice stuff and I think it would be important to find out if this pipe came from the factory like that or if there's a chance it was fired after it left the factory before it came into your possession.
I would be really interested in what BA has to say about this. I personally am a JP fan and every barrel I got from them was brand new (never fired through) and super clean inside (no tooling chatter). That barrel looks very.....odd, specially for being new.
I bought one for a build a week before you posted the last video on it. I'm worried now, looked shiney to my eye looking down the bore, but I don't have a bore scope to inspect it. I may have to get one now. Keep us updated if you contact ballistic.
Ive read a lot of the posts and many dont know what the hell they are talking about !! I dont endorse BA products " I use them and I have an 18'' BA barrel on my custom AR and know 6 other people that use this companys barrels. My barrel is an 18" BABL223021P .223 Wylde SPR Barrel w/Ops 12. (Premium Series ). I not only reload my own custom ammo but have been doing it for (40) years !! Im getting SUB .25 MOA groups with this barrel at 200 yards with my loads. (Bench Rest ). 2x18 Power Burris Scope. I cant knock a flea off a rabbits ass with my combination all day long at 450 Yrds ( BR) Of course !!! The point im trying to make is this video on the BA barrel was to point out the necessary part of cleaning out the barrel when its NEW !! . When I got my BA barrel I looked down it with my bore scope and found the same exact thing this guy found in the barrel in this video !! I cleaned it with a top quality COPPER solvent and let the barrel soak wet in the solvent !!! OVERNIGHT.. I cleaned the barrel with a phosphor bronze brush and wet patched it 4 times and bore scoped it again and it was so damn clean you could use for a straw !!! BA makes some of the best quality barrels on the planet, And for the price your not going to find a better barrel anywhere period !!! People can brag all they want about Faxxon !!! They are way OVER PRICED and way OVER RATED !! I own 2 and i know this as a fact.
It looks like they did not hone the bore prior to rifling. When they test fired, The poor surface stripped all the copper from the bullet and then lead was deposited into the bore. The rust can be from a reaction of the 3 different metals together.
MPI= Magnetic partical inspection. HP=High PROOF "Blue Pill" tested which is 20-25 percent higher than maximum pressure 1 shot then MPI tested afterwards. This information is published in speer bullets reloading manual. I would say the barrel had been used because HP test is 1 shot not several shots.
MPI Magnetic Particle Inspected KB. MPI looks for defects /flaws (such as cracks) within the metal. This also identifies putting and other problems with metallurgy.
How many rounds did they throw down it? Seems like a ton!! Also, why didn't they even try to clean it and/or add some anti-rust oil to a swab and apply some to it at least?
Personally, if I spent the $ for a premium barrel and it looked like that from the start, it wouldnt be in my arsenal, it would be back at the dealer for a replacement.
Gotta go with the crowd on this one, used or possibly flood damaged. One or two test rounds won't give you that great a build up. Looking forward to see what they have to say about it.
Me an un expert also. They do run a hot load thru them to test them but I have no info on what one of two rnds would look like.I guess I`ll have to go build another to find out since I purchased the same bore scope he has.
Mark Spivey I mean it may be labeled a “premium” line but it’s still an entry level brand. I would see how it shoots first but what are they like $150? I wouldn’t be too PO’d about it.
Rifle Shooter Channel add another $100 at least on it!! I wouldn't say that Ballistic Advantage barrels are entry level. Definitely not top shelf either but they aren't a cheap brand
Glade to see it cleaned up nicely! I'm thinking of a BA 18" or 20" SPR or DMR barrel for my first build. Excited for your review of the PSA DLC bolt carrier group. I'm thinking of picking one up for my DMR build.
I got a brand new BCA barrel that had this same rust looking stuff. Some said it’s not rust but copper something gunk but when I sent pics into BCA they even said it’s rust and they don’t use copper anti seize. So most likely it’s rust from sitting somewhere maybe 🤷♂️
I was surprised to see the angle of the striations in the grooves more acute angle than the groove. I've seen completely sideways or completely in alignment. This groove path just seems odd. Any idea what might cause that?
There is a bullet for reloading/barrel break in/honing whatever that you load and shoot and it conforms ur barrel like bore paste except ONLY where bullet contacts does it smooth,, check it out, looks like they might have fired it with the smoothing bullets to help accurize and test at same time...like a final lapping, and forgot it on a Friday evening learned up in wrong place and flash rusyed
My guess is that its 416 stainless. It's good for barrels and will resist corrosion more than carbon steel, but still susceptible to chloride contamination and rust if not properly cared for it will rust pretty quick..
I just got a stainless steel barrel from CBC and it looks like the lands are shattered in the first inch or so in front of the chamber. I looked at the first one I bought and seems to be the same way but it shoots great.
My supposed premium ballistic advantage heavy fluted barrel had a lot more rust than yours but no copper because it had not been fired yet and when I did fire it would not shoot better than 2 moa with match grade ammo but my proof research SS barrel would shoot the same ammo under .5 moa I guess the ballistic advantage people do not know how to use a borescope
KB,I know you're excited to mount and run rounds through that barrel, but that is used and neglected with many rounds going through the pipe, in my opinion. I'd contact them before any further assembly. Good luck!
I just saw a segment on guns and gear with Ballistic Advantage rep and he claimed all their barrels are honed and hand lapped. That was not the last thing done with that barrel. It was shot more than a few times and there is pitting plus test firing a few rounds wouldn't leave the gas hole that carboned up. I was thinking of buying one but not if that's the kind of stuff they try to push on people many of whom have bore scopes.
Well, now their prices will drop way down, since we all know that all their barrels are crap! And I will buy them based on low price, clean them up, like you had to do Kota.
If you buy 3 more of those i think you better rename the series on the builds. call one the tin man build (reference "billy talent rusted from the rain" or wizard of oz) or maybe swamp thing. lol good info regardless.
Hey KB, I found your video very interesting. I just recieved a premium series SS barrel from BA in .308 Hanson profile. I got this barrel on 23 Sept 2022. The bore of this barrel is 10x as bad as the one you video here. There is CRATERS of rust from breach to muzzle. No joke what you show is NOTHING compared to the junk I just recieved. I can't even get BA to respond to me about this!. Any help or even videoing this barrel for me might help.
Now I wonder what my barrel looks like.....It would be great if they sent you another barrel free of charge than you can compare the 2👍🇺🇸.....Stay Safe.......Steve from Illinois👍🇺🇸
What I want to know is how did shoot? How long will it last before the accuracy decays? What do other brands of barrels look like at the same point in time?
Your first vid on this, I didn't think it was a big deal. This time looks worse. Even after swabbing, where the rust was, now looks pitted. I'd talk to somebody at Ballistic Adv and maybe send that back for a replacement.
Looks good to me now to tell you the truth . Just needed to be cleaned as I expected. It was test fired with a high pressure round to check for cracks Im almost certain. The gas port looks good to me , I've seen way worse . I think it's a good barrel to be honest with you .
Looks similar to my BA barrel. Worse I've ever seen was on a T-bolt and it shot good so maybe my BA will also. Shows how some barrels are "copper mines".
Did you ever contact BA about the rust? I just got a complete upper from aero precision with a BA barrel that looks as bad if not worse than yours with the rust.
Shocks me how many companys do not clean there rifles or barrels before they send them out just test fire and box amd ship. When we startes in the mid 90s when we recieved a new rifle for inventory it was fairly clean. But now they are nasty I have to punch the vores out on all of them before I put then on the shelves. Drives me nuts.
Yea I kmow I am a few dealer. And the barrels for byilds amd even built rifles m700. M70. T3s doesnt matter they are all dirty when I get them. Amd when we started when I was a young fellow the rifles seemed to ve fairly clean when we recieved them. My father aaod the samething. Bothers me
Not sure if you have published any similar reviews on other brands of barrels. Without a baseline and other data it would be difficult to tell if this is unique to this particular barrel or if others are the same way. It looks problematic from the video but then again this may be what most barrels look like from the factory after the initial test fire. Would be interesting to know either way. i have a .223 Wylde BA Hanson barrel and getting ready to install it. Don't have a scope but considering getting one to check it out and see. The particular barrel I have was used and supposedly has had 20-25 rounds through it.
I have the exact same barrel on order, its due here on Friday and I have to say that I'm a little concerned after watching this. Given the total lack of ar parts ill probably keep it and just lower my expectations.
@@JenkinsStevenD 4150 is better than 4140 for a rifle barrel both are in the same family of steal but 4150 is a little more rigid and where resistant and 41V50 I believe has some chromium mixed in
Someone here mentioned that it's possible you made this purchase from Big Daddy? Is this true? If not, where? May I ask? That would explain a lot, I have never purchased anything from them. However, I know some acquaintances that have, and their experience was horrible. One had a similar issue as this one. I have a total of 4 BA barrels and 3 Faxon, 1 criterion, 2 christensen arms, and 1 from preferred barrels. They are all test fired. It was stated in my instructions sheet. I also have a bore scope, and I had one from Faxon show similar signs. However, it cleaned up well. Another note to mention is that all my barrels came in a sealed package. All but my Christensen arms came in what felt like a 20mil plastic bag, and the C.A. came in a sealed box with thick foaming to protect it. I would contact BA great customer service. My BA's shoot lights out ! They clean up very wellgas port is smooth and cleaned, I remember looking in a Rosco barrel for someone after his gun smith opened up his gas port 10th thou, the edges looked rough like this one, my barrels have nice smooth edges. In retrospect, from seeing yours, I would think it was opened up as well.
@@centertarget3186 Krieger is certainly know for their perfection, but for the money Criterion is one of the best. Hand lapped I've been able to get sub moa out of regular 55 grain federal in a 5 round shot group. I like their 18 inch hybrid with the rifle length gas system.
I have two of them. The only one I have mounted at the moment is an 11.3" on an AR pistol build. It's top notch. The second barrel is a 16" that I'm putting on a build for my stepson.
I have a Hanson 18" 308 on a Aero Precision m5. Had a time with failure to feed. Called BA and sent them my whole rifle. Told them it seemed under gassed. Clint opened up the gas port. Runs great, shoots good. Its shoots around moa most of the time. A little better sometimes. I also believe my barrel should have never got past QC.
Looks like the hpt m197 proof load was extra potent lol. Weird Cuz normally you don't see stainless 223wylde barrels made for accuracy that are proof tested.
Does the outside of the barrel look like it has been mounted up? I think someone used it and return it. Never had a BA barrel but from their comment in the last video they seem like a stand up company. Unlike my Anderson barrel that shoots minute of basketball and they won't talk to me.
You would still think that barrel would be in better condition. Especially for Premium Barrel . I know I'm gonna stick with Wilson Combat for SS Barrels . Then again I've never ran an endo snake through it . So it coukd be the same thing lol . Endo Snake new slogan . Keeping Barrel Manufacturers Honest
Yeah sometimes when it gets sprayed on it goes on a little heavy inside the chamber. You can run a rat tail file up in there a few dozen times or drill it out with a 3/8 drill. Run it up in the chamber about 4-5” and you’ll see all the nitride shavings crawling out. Should shoot real good!
I think you gave it a fair shake the first time and the second time around. That is far from being a premium barrel. That’s actually shameful. I k ow one person that will never buy a ballistic advantage barrel.
Somebody bought that barrell, returned it, and they then sold it to you lol, never expecting someone with a borescope would be getting it.

Sounds good, because I was going to buy a 18in rifle length gas system Barrel to put on my next build
I have a performance series barrel and never scoped it and don't care to but I can say my ballistic advantage is more accurate then I can shoot and is one of my favorite features on my ar
I sent you an email to Jason this morning with the previous emails. Please feel free to reach out to me, I would love to talk
Now that is the most useful and intelligent answer to rust in the barrel! Good comment!
Just got one of their barrels, had similar stuff that looks like rust but I believe it was a coating used during their qpq treatment.
My premium fluted looked the same, sucks to by a barrel then spend hours getting it cleaned up. I had to use JB bore compound to get it decent. Never buying a BA barrel again. Much better offerings at the price range of the BA premium. Also recommend everyone get a bore scope!
That barrell has more than just a few rounds in it! Send it back and lets test another one.
I have that exact same barrel on my build, so thank you for this video. I'll have to check mine to see if it has similar corrosion and marks
I'm not an expert either but I personally would expect better given its a "Premium" barrel.
Simpson Rd Larry I just checked their site, that barrel is $190.
Rifle Shooter Channel ok I thought they were a little more than that. I stand corrected 😉👍🏻
Kind of let us know if those solvents eat your Teslong bore scope up, not that it cost a whole lot but still pretty decent scope.
Yep, it looks Ten times better now Kotaboy32
Hey Ko show us the video camera used to look inside the barrel
He already did a review on it , and like me I see something good I run out and buy it . Seems to be a pretty good deal for 50 smackers
ua-cam.com/video/jsVSVeK-itw/v-deo.html
My guess is that its 416 stainless. It's good for barrels and will resist corrosion more than carbon steel, but still susceptible to chloride contamination and rust if not properly cared for it will rust pretty quick..
I would contact BA. Not a good showing for their premium barrel!
You all should see what Savage lets out and then say it is in there spec. it makes that look good
Yep it’s been previously played, takes some rounds for the gas port to get to looking like that
I just got a stainless steel barrel from CBC and it looks like the lands are shattered in the first inch or so in front of the chamber. I looked at the first one I bought and seems to be the same way but it shoots great.
You should do a before and after barrel break-in. Or even try the Tubbs Final Finish stuff.
That looked like it was pitted from rust. You did a great job cleaning. I love BEAR CREEK ARSENAL
You have pitting from the rust. I would email the video and give them a call. I wonder if you mistakingly got a returned barrel?
Well, now their prices will drop way down, since we all know that all their barrels are crap! And I will buy them based on low price, clean them up, like you had to do Kota.
If you buy 3 more of those i think you better rename the series on the builds. call one the tin man build (reference "billy talent rusted from the rain" or wizard of oz) or maybe swamp thing. lol good info regardless.
Hey KB,
I found your video very interesting.
Any help or even videoing this barrel for me might help.
same here, customer service is a joke
2 mins in and this is the barrel I want so hope this is good lol
Now I wonder what my barrel looks like.....It would be great if they sent you another barrel free of charge than you can compare the 2👍🇺🇸.....Stay Safe.......Steve from Illinois👍🇺🇸
What I want to know is how did shoot? How long will it last before the accuracy decays? What do other brands of barrels look like at the same point in time?
Your first vid on this, I didn't think it was a big deal. This time looks worse. Even after swabbing, where the rust was, now looks pitted. I'd talk to somebody at Ballistic Adv and maybe send that back for a replacement.
maybe they were stored in a facility affected by a FLOOD!!!! id definitely not mount it and send it back. like the guy before you did.
Things look so imperfect magnified.
You really need to send that back
Did you ever contact BA about the rust?
Why I don't like to buy stainless steel barrels. Just way to expensive compared to ol' reg 4140 steel. Chrome line'd of course.
Why 4140 over 4150? Seems like most of the barrels made today are 41V50.
@@JenkinsStevenD 4150 is better than 4140 for a rifle barrel both are in the same family of steal but 4150 is a little more rigid and where resistant and 41V50 I believe has some chromium mixed in
That really looks like a used barrel someone sent back or something.
Is this barrel new? Was it oiled? Was steel case/bimetal projectiles shot through it?.
Appears the metal was left bare and unoiled/untreated sir
Love the channel,
Thats aero rust helps with projectile guidance!
Can you recommend a borescope, please? I bought a complete upper from another manufacturer and now I'm paranoid. 😓
Notification squad on point today
It looks fire lapped to me. Could have used a 100 grit projectile. Pretty rough Brother.
Question if money was not an issue and you could only buy one ar15 in 5.56 what would you buy and why.
JP
@@kotaboy32 I know JP is high quality. Any thoughts regarding Krieger or Criterion barrels?
@@centertarget3186 Krieger is certainly know for their perfection, but for the money Criterion is one of the best. Hand lapped I've been able to get sub moa out of regular 55 grain federal in a 5 round shot group. I like their 18 inch hybrid with the rifle length gas system.
I think I would try another brand like Faxon or Roscoe. That looks terrible.
Ever scoped a Daniel defense barrel?
Has anyone tried the ballistic advantage Hanson barrel that comes with the pinned gas block.
Kool Video Bro.. Thanks!!
I wonder what a cold hammer forged barrel would look like V.S. a melonite or chrome lined barrel?
Hammer forging is the way the barrel was made. A hammer forged barrel can be both chrome lined OR melonited/nitrided after, and most of them are.
My Wilson Combat barrel is on of my favorites
I purchased one of their 300 blackout nitride barrels, and the nitride was messed up inside the chamber
Nitriding isn't a coating, it's a molecular hardening of the metal. So I wonder if it was some bad reaction or reaming mark that you're seeing instead
I would mop it down with some Sweets 7.62 and let it soak for 15 minutes and then run dry patches until they come out clean.
What bore-scope are you using?
I think you gave it a fair shake the first time and the second time around. That is far from being a premium barrel. That’s actually shameful. I k ow one person that will never buy a ballistic advantage barrel.
Now ya know two..Me
They are great shooting barrels.
I think they have a corrosive element in their cutting fluid from the machine shop.
bryan lawless those barrels aren’t cut they are button rifled!!
That barrel looks cut and not button rifled.
Stainless Steel?
What brand is your Bore scope or post a link to it
I’m wanting the same barrel
