    I just learned that porcelain and limestone also have measurable amounts of silica. It’s something important to think about as we start to use stone in large formats that require more cutting.

    I think one of the reasons quartz countertops are so popular is that they allow you to have a very low maintenance and light or white surface. Many people like the brightness that they can bring into a space and the traditional alternative is typically a marble. The argument everyone makes is that marble is a pain to maintain and quartz is easy. There is some truth to this but I think it comes down to what your expectations are for the care of the materials in your home. Natural materials require more care but they are better for the environment than synthetics and when issues of manufacturing processes causing harm to workers come up, we have to ask ourselves if the low maintenance option is worth it. Also, what ultimately lasts longer and feels better to you: a wool sweater or a polyester blend?

    Hmmmm…this would make me think about another product. Isn’t silica the stuff in the packets when you buy a new boxed shoe? The packet they say do not swallow 🤔

    Glad to know it’s not just the US contributing to this problem! What are some tips for making sure you’re not purchasing engineered stone if you’re not familiar with this process of picking out countertops or stone finishes?

    Also radioactivity might be another issue. Plus I just found out after we moved to a place with quartz countertop that when i swiped my finger from the bottom part, what is pretty much on each top shelf white dust was left on my finger so I think all the dust was slowly falling into my food, cutlery, pans and everything I had in top shelfs.... anyone else had this white dust? Why they would not wipe it after installing, if the dust is so dangerous...

      @@createdbeing302 take everything out and wipe it many times it's very hard to wipe completely and then hope it doesnt get too much into air and food later. For radioactivity have windows open frequently. Still wish i would not have it in kitchen. Or if decide to install definitelly with the top wood shelf included not without how they do it.

    I go out and cut this worktops at customers houses and fit them. We do in 2 days what it takes bit company’s to do in 2 weeks. Yes it’s dusty, but if that doesn’t kill me. Time will

    Don't feel bad if you have quartz countertops! We didn't know this either until the NPR podcast came out. But spread the word so this problem doesn't continue.

    I would say ‘put heads together’ and create a cutting machine where it also uses water. This is a very sad; you go to work to make a living not to die from it.

    Coming from so one who knows and trust me I know. A lot of shops cut dry and don't give employees or won't even let employees have respirators and other PPE. I've been in a lot shops and on million jobs. Hardly ever see anyone with a mask of any type. Mask cost money and slow the employee down. Company's could give a shit about the safety of the employees!! It's just the world we live in.

    It's not the issue of quartz stone itself.

    Don't mislead people. Working with any common counter top material will expose you to crystalline silica IF you work with dry cutting and polishing tools. Always Wet cut and polish. Granite , Marble, Porcelain, Ceramic, and even solid surface ALL have Silicates. It's in Mortar, grout, concrete, and Just about every product used to construct a home. Hardi plank is fiber cement. It's all based on silica. The problem is not quartz counter tops, it's people who choose to Create hazards either by ignorance, apathy or both.

    It's interesting that Australia adopted testing standards for worker's at risk, but I did not see anything in the article about them being more preventative. Have you heard of any country adopting better practices?

    Miss leading title. This issue exists across the board with all silica based products including concrete. Workers need to wear their PPE to keep from inhaling the dust. “Wet” manufacturing techniques for engineered material virtually eliminates dust. Maybe your next video show be about lung disease found in bakery workers. It’s a real hazard as well. Again, it’s about wearing your PPE.

      We weren't allowed to wear mask. OSHA fined us one time for not having proper training on how to wear mask so after that happened we weren't allowed to wear them anymore.

  • @jagboy69
    @jagboy69 2 роки тому

    This is not hard. You wear a mask in the grocery store, you put on a mask when cutting silica based products. Don't forget about the mail order cat little box people, they use silica sand. DUH!

      @@SKFortyseven3277 why not get the training then? If training is done, doesn't that solve the problem? If not, then you all will have a solid argument for not being able to protect yourselves.
