Welcome to the Aamodt / Plumb UA-cam Channel!
We are a boutique Architecture, Interiors and Construction Firm based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 2017 we started The Slow Space Movement, akin to Slow Food for the built environment. We spend 90% of our time indoors and so many of the buildings we inhabit are poorly designed, made with low quality toxic materials and built with exploited labor.
McMansions are the fast food of homes so we are starting a video series on Slow Homes which features tips and advice for creating a home that is good, clean and fair. If you want to live a conscious life and are concerned with making choices that are good for their health, good for the environment and ethical for other humans then this series is for you!
We hope you like it and spread the word.

Lol
Why am I reading that cedar is toxic?
What is the least toxic material to use in your opinion on the siding of a house that resists mold ?
Love this! I became chemically sensitive after buying a brand new home. Looking into building a non toxic home now. Thanks for sharing this.
I have recently stopped buying plastic storage bins, which I love and have a lot of because with a lot of kids you need to organize. But recently, my eyes have opened to the dangers of offgassing and now I look around my house and cringe and open windows very frequently, even in the winter. Thank you for this, as I am in the middle of my “out with the toxic and In with the less toxic” rampage and finding it very difficult to find affordable options. One thing I worry about with a lot of the wooden products is wondering if and what they were treated with. Michael’s craft store has wooden crate boxes which are great for organizing. I do wonder if they’ve been treated with anything but they look like all wood. With a 20% off coupon you can get them for 10 or $11 and they’re fairly big. Thanks for this! Looking forward to more.
Love! Thank you so much. It's unbelievable how much toxicity we live in and so hard to know where to start to clean it up. I learned something new about the PVC pipes. Now I'm questioning my water :(
Can’t agree more on that . Putting chemical over the surface of a natural stone is a stupid idea to begin with
I would say ‘put heads together’ and create a cutting machine where it also uses water. This is a very sad; you go to work to make a living not to die from it.
Wonderful info. Thanks for putting together and sharing. Love the idea of wood and stainless. I’m thinking about copper and hoping it would meet your ethical standards. Thanks again
Hot denim jacket. Now what can we do to remove PVC from piping?
I think they, (Home Despot") Hahah, sells Non or low VOC paint, too. They may also sell hardwood flooring, the real stuff, like white oak. I'm excited to try a, 1/3 rd beeswax, turpentine and boiled linseed oil finish on solid wood ! Thanks for the cool video! Keep up the good work! Have you smelled white cedar from Canada? It smells the best! I use it as a cheaper option for decks, as compared to plastic decking. I'll be asking my local lumber yard to source some of that FSC plywood. I will be using it for sub floors. Thanks again!!!
That boo is annoying!
Thank you, I have MCS and have built and remodeled many homes for myself. The video is really well made, easy to understand and no fluff. I am always looking for errors or misunderstandings, and I saw none. I like your approach and openess and YOU ARE RIGHT.
Me too Cheryl. It's hard to live in this world of SO many toxins😞
DIY.
I'm really blessed to live in a very wealhty City, we have super rich people dying all the time with no relatives so they put all their really expensive natural wood furniture in these consignment shops. This is really good advice and I like your style! Thank you!~
RAAAWER!
I enjoyed this video so much. You both are very clear...I must renovate an entire condo and I'm a total newbie. This was so helpful. Thank you.
I must renovate my condo and you gave me such a great start to understand how to do this with my health as top priority. Thank you.
Hi
Great info. What youre doing is a great help to many people and this will grow. Thank you.
love your video helped me a lot avoiding mdf
Thanks for this! Can Daltile be used on floors?
Coming from so one who knows and trust me I know. A lot of shops cut dry and don't give employees or won't even let employees have respirators and other PPE. I've been in a lot shops and on million jobs. Hardly ever see anyone with a mask of any type. Mask cost money and slow the employee down. Company's could give a shit about the safety of the employees!! It's just the world we live in.
Some knew about the danger , but made no attempt to comply with osha regulations , he just opened a bunch of shell companies to hide the money in case he was sued...
I’d love more content like this!
This channel needs more videos and views!
IKEA is deforesting Romania. Not a good look.
My favorite is the soap stone because of all the texture & color. I love that you said the soapstone patinas, very cool. I also love the wood but after someone eats at a wood counter how do you clean it? 🤔 I’m so used to using a spray and wipe cleaner that disinfects
Hmmmm…this would make me think about another product. Isn’t silica the stuff in the packets when you buy a new boxed shoe? The packet they say do not swallow 🤔
People like you just like to ruin things. If you look hard enough everything is dangerous even with your wood countertop. You should just live in a tent.
Thanks for the education on the options. I'm doing a kitchen makeover next month and wanted something affordable and more eco-friendly. Your video has sealed my decision to go with butcher block.
Wood is noble, warm and aesthetic option with disappointing cons of depleted green cover on our beloved planet !
It's not the issue of quartz stone itself.
I love that you're showing the less toxic options and telling where to obtain them. Would also be interested in seeing a home setup with these options of anyone wants to open their home. ;)
I love the soapstone. Love the videos
I am employed by a Engineered surfaces company that seeks to change this. We have also added a 100% sustainable product.
what do you recommend to store cashmere sweaters? thank you
Soapstone? Can you say "asbestos"?
i used a portion of real butcher block on a cabinet I rescued from the garbage in my old home. it was just one surface so i went ahead and treated it just like it was a butcher block? oiled it often but cut right onto it. I think IKEA wood tops are sooo pretty but they are no longer full butcher block? they have composite inside but this makes them lighter and also they are more sustainable according to their website. I'm thinking of either stainless steel, butcher block, or soapstone now in my kitchen. my issue might be what the fabricator my contractor works with could make for me?
Red cedar exposure can be very toxic to the body. In high densities red cedar trees case a reaction “cedar fever” in some individuals.
This is not hard. You wear a mask in the grocery store, you put on a mask when cutting silica based products. Don't forget about the mail order cat little box people, they use silica sand. DUH!
@@SKFortyseven3277 why not get the training then? If training is done, doesn't that solve the problem? If not, then you all will have a solid argument for not being able to protect yourselves.
I am very thankful for your videos which is very helpful for the consumers who has no knowledge about the right, safe, & ethically manufactured home products. It is great service as well as very educational! Thank you.👍
Keep up the good work. Another benefit of copper (in addition to ayurvedic tradition of drinking water out of copper cups as the extra copper in the water has health benefits including the prevention of grey hair) is that viruses etc cannot live on it. Copper is naturally bacteriostatic, thus ideal for door knobs and pipes.. It would be interesting to see a video on the horrors of PVC pipe. Also they sell a (I think its PVC?) board at home depot.. White sheets that u can cut easily into shelves. I like them (+even chemically sensitive people like them) because they have no smell.. Curious if they have the same carcinogens +endocrine disruptors as PVC Pipe, and curious (even if they did) if it would matter much if U were only using them as shelves since they might not out-gas much if you're not running water over it?? (as U would with PVC pipe) or would they??
We are just finishing our build of our house made from Western Canadian hemlock. So, of course we are looking for as much sustained products as possible. We are using Quartz kitchen countertop and using our old butcher block pieces that we bought with us from the Uk years ago. We are now trying to transfer to natural products and moving away from using plastics.
Like your channel. Please keep going as this is so helpful.
Thanks very much, I am looking for storage materials with alternative to plastics.
Soapstone is the best one here by far. Expensive though and tough to size.
What about Granite or Marble?
Just from the name of this channel you can tell the video is going to be bullshit.
