  • Are you looking for a new anime to watch? Nothing in the 2023 releases doing it for you? Well, what about a "hidden gem" recommendation, an unknown great anime to watch? This week, it's Planetes, a 2003 release from Sunrise, who animated Cowboy Bebop, Gintama, and Code Geass, including all their seasons and movies. The sci-fi anime follows a young girl with a new job collecting junk in space, a tall about the mundane, everyday aspects of life in a new, amazing backdrop; to us at least. From these initial reactions and impressions, Planetes seems like a great anime, following a Cowboy Bebop formula for success. Give this one a watch!
Unknown Great Anime is a series dedicated to uncovering the hidden gems of the Japanese animation world, finding highly rated, but unpopular works to recommend for you to watch! Sometimes impressions sometimes reactions, but always focused on sending something good your way.

In place of my usual links, here's a correction:
In the script I referred to INTO (the organization who dedicated and removed the monument) as a company, rather than what seems to be an international organization between governments. Wanted to offer a correction in case it effects the plot moving forward!

Planes is defintely in my top 5. Maybe even top 3From a hard-sci perspective it's one of the most realistic pieces sci-fi media out there.
It starts out as an episodic slice of life show with some underlying themes and serious moments. But after the first five or six episodes, it changes into someting much more. Suddenly there is personal drama and political intriuege. Im talking Yormungand levels and that isn't overexaggerating. It quickly starts becoming less and less episodic. So many layered charecterts are introduced and interact with each other. All these different threads are woven or are revealed to the viewer to be woven into one thread, one story.
Planetes one of the animes that I can recommend to everyone.

A great recommendation! I'm a big fan of Planetes, and it's nice to see more people sharing a taste for anime. Another great recommendation, from an obscure anime, is the OVA directed by Mamoru Oshii, "Gosenzo-sama Banbanzai!" The director's other works, ultimately, take the spotlight off this amazing journey.

This anime is truly, truly special.
I am an astrophotographer and space nerd, I love space, but most space sci fi doesnt do it for me.
I read the manga for it and, I thought, it had a LOT of potential but suffered from a short run time and some poor writing decisions.
The anime takes the source material, improves upon it in almost every conceivable way, and makes it into a masterpiece.
I just finished it and I am so so so so goddamn happy I could cry. It is the first anime Ive ever seen to take a source material, and just directly improve upon it without disrespecting it or stepping out of line with the authors intention in the original.
It is a touchy thing to do, and they do so splendidly. Bravo Sunrise!

I think Starship Operators could benefit from a similar retrospective in this format.
The basic synopsis, minus any major spoilers: The protagonists are young military cadets whose planet gets invaded and conquered by a militaristic empire. They're on a prototype ship, and decide to fight a one ship rebellion in order to free their homeworld. Lacking funding for munitions and supplies, they get a sponsor in a TV network. This sponsorship deal turns their actual fight into a literal reality show in order to garner galactic sympathy (and cynically, ratings for the network.) The empire attempts to chase and destroy them, and the battles depicted are (mostly) hard sci-fi in nature.
Meanwhile, various political forces are jockeying for power and manipulate the situation behind the scenes. It also delves into how detached the network's audience - and by extension, the viewers - can be from the horrors of war. It's an underrated anime.

As for the new format/show idea I think it works, especially if you need more time to mull over your more research heavy or theme heavy videos. As long as it doesn't become too much to manage, I think you should keep this up.

I'm pretty sure that should be "pla-ne-tes" not "plan-ates"
A clue is in the katakana. PU RA NE TE SU Japanese doesn't do consonant clusters, which is where you get a lot of those extra vowels...except for TS. If it was "plan-ates" it would be rendered "PU RA NE TSU" (or PU RA N E TSU).

I'll be honest Prof. I came across this channel yesterday and binge watched 8-9 of your vids (about 25-30 min average) and I am already in love with this channel.
Yeah, there are some times when your analysis kinda misses some obvious things due to your own pessimism. Case in point being your edgerunners analysis where you missed the fact that Lucy's 'moon' was David by the end of it and she wasn't really selfish.
However, you do bring up a lot of points about my favourite anime that I never deigned to think, that provide an entirely new perspective on them. And I love that fact. You have secured a loyal watcher, Prof.
I'll be coming back every week to check out your new vids while I catch back on the previous ones.
Also one question though- have you watched Made in Abyss(another great anime) and Chivalry of a Failed Knight(vastly different genre but still a good anime).
Why am I asking this? Because I want to know if you also watch those 'trashy' power fantasy or 'cutesy' anime that somehow turn out to be a lot more.
Chivalry doesn't have any deep theme(the themes that it develops are due to that character rather than the characters developing around the themes). However, it provides great character development, excellent romance, likeable main characters with their own agency and great fight scenes.
I have seen you analysing a lot of deep and thematic anime for the last few hours but do you find entertainment in literature meant for the entertainment of the reader yet becoming great in its own right?
    Just a genuine curiosity here.

It's fairly long and it's 'Case' nature(a single case divided into few episodes) really manages to convey different deep themes and such sometimes. The anime is pretty good, but it's lightyears away from the original manga. Yukimura's PLANETES is a masterpiece in human-centered sci-fi, in simple, yet effective storytelling and in balance. The anime takes some elements and the base line of the manga. but then builds its own thing. It has much more focus on comedy and the whole corporate thing. The manga is much more focused, and feels more mature in its intent and the way it explores its characters; especially once the final arch starts to roll.
I think both are good products, but if I had to stick with one, it would be the manga... by far. It's one of my favourite mangas ever. Precise, elegant, human, intimate and yet with a promise of greatness. I'd go as far as saying that it surpasses Vinland Saga in many regards due to its less ambitious nature and more focused run.

    • @ridleyroid9060
      @ridleyroid9060 13 годин тому

I disagree, I think the anime is a monumental improvement over the manga. The manga has some fairly shoddy writing at the start and rushes a lot. It improves a ton by the 4th volume but it then ends. So many things are expanded on and given weight and meaning in the anime, so many things are made believable as well (tanabe and hachis relationship felt forced, especially when she is introduced in the 2nd volume of a 4 volume manga).
