I'm a quarter German and my grandmother used to sing this song before she died after that I started singing it as a form of respect for her
The Germans are not to be disgraced but rather they are to be honored for their contributions to history for it is not just World War 2 and the Holocaust for there is much more to German history than just World War 2. Sincerely an American who knows about some German history. I would say the best contributions that came from the Germans happens to be technology and art and also without the help of the Germans and French and Spanish and Dutch my nation would not have gained independence so to my fellow Americans who watched this we can thank the Germans for helping us. They also built a lot of the things we see now in our nation.
I refuse to believe there would be such person who only see the Na*i and Holocaust in WWII as everything in German history then ignore the rest of it like WWI, Holy Roman Empire, Prussian Empire, etc.
Well sadly german history heavily emphasizes the Nazi era (but of course this era shouldn't be forgotten), and the era of german empire is (mostly) set equal to the Nazi era (which is of course is nonsense).
I would generally wish that the german government would encourage more patriotism based on culture and history. However, the only political party that emphasizes this is the far right AFD, to whom most germans (me included) are opposed.
