I recently bought two rechargeable clip on tuners from Amazon and I thought I was done with buying tuners!! 🤣🤣 This unit looks like a perfect solution for string changing and tuning as well as a metronome. I remember seeing the earlier versions of this online, however this updated one looks like a winner. After checking the link provided in the description, it’s showing that they are on back order but when they do have it in stock I’m definitely interested in buying one!!! Appreciate the review Shane!!🎸🎸🎸👏🏾
From Leo: Wow, that product has more technology than Sputnik. I still have a tin pitch pipe from the '60's, and it still works pretty close. Who would have imagined how technical tuners would become?
Hi Shane, I bought one after watching Justin Johnsons review on how handy they are for storing different slide tunings. I've encountered the E- string issue but I just slacken the string off a little first & it seems to work every time. After owning many tuners over the year's this is the best of all of them 👌👍
You can press the button twice and it will stop winding, it saves just whipping it off. I expect it takes a little practice and as you said, we don't want snapped strings. My wife bought me one for my birthday, what a lovely gift. I had that problem with the High E, it works every time. I collaborate mine before every use which gets me thinking, would the normal Tuner be as quick? Still i am really taken with mine. The numerous different tunings is a superb function. Great stuff Shane, thanks pal.
The “tune up” feature is great so it leaves no slack in your strings. Also tuning with capos. How often do your capo tensions leave you out of tune playing live? As long as your intonation is set up, it should get it right. Only con: it’s quite loud. So if I’m tuning between songs and someone is speaking or praying (church context) the beep beep is like the Roadrunner arriving. Otherwise happy with mine.
And Gibson used to offer a factory installed robotuner system on their Les Pauls, but I remember that people hated it so much that most would just swap it out for a 'normal' tuning system, and then Gibson completely abandoned the tech, even on their 'innovative' Modern series that's meant to showcase 'cutting edge' guitar tech?
I thought people hated the robot tuners so much that Gibson only had them available for like a year before they stopped offering the system on ANY of their guitar models? But I just don't remember, was the problem that the Gibson system didn't work? I mean I guess the Roadie can be used on multiple guitars, but I wonder why people are willing to embrace this, while hating the apparently even more convenient factory installed auto-tuning system? And would/do any professional 'roadies' actually use these things when they're tuning up multiple guitars for live shows? Or is this REALLY intended for 'home use'?
Completely different product. The problem with Gibsons Robo Tuners was they failed to work. You could not remove them, they added weight and if you did not disable the auto function they would constantly alter the tuning and even break strings for you during a gig. This product is essentially a string winder and tuner for those that may change a lot of strings and want a quicker more convenient option.
I already have owned a number of tuners. I now have two, one as a backup. My main tuner is a Peterson Strobe Tuner at around $65. Also have a Poly-Tuner as my backup, but was my main one before I bought the Strobe. To me, a Strobe tuner is THE best. Not sure I'd want to spend $129 on this tuner. I have a "hand winder" for changing strings that works just fine. Plus some of my EG's have locking tuners. Thanks for the VID though.
I can see this being useful if you need to change tunings in a gig and want to do it quickly and silently, but otherwise I'll stick to my clip-on. Also, this would only tune to the exact pitch- however a lot of us may use slightly altered tunings to adjust for the inherent intonation discrepancies of guitar tuning (I know I do). For example, you might always need to tune your B very sightly flat so a D chord sounds in tune compared to an open G, or you might leave your low E and A strings a tiny bit flat to compensate for the extra distance travelled when they vibrate. The string winder function is nice, but I've got an $8 adaptor for my cordless screwdriver that does the same thing. I also like having my tuner "online" all the time instead of having to pick it up- so either a clip-on or an inline tuner in my signal chain.
There's nothing stopping you from manually adjusting you B string slightly flat - or whatever you're feeling you need? In fact, you would already be tuning it manally as perfectly as possible first, being releasing the B ever so slightly, anyway. I think your last point is the kicker, though. It sounds like laziness, but in practice, convenience is king. I think the clip on will continue as he tuner of choice for most. Especially when you consider price. I'd still want a Roadie, though. Axwell as a clip on, not instead of.
We normally play outside and the clip-ons can be very hard to see. We use the Roadie 3 all the time. At an outdoor gig, with acoustic guitars, it's a life-saver. We use it when practicing, too. We use multiple tunings and tuning combinations. It's faster and easier with the Roadie. Maybe we're lazy. But we're glad we have it.
I'd be interested to know how well it works in a gig environment. I've found that other 'vibration' tuners can be affected by other people plating loudly around me, which doesn't happen in a 'hard wired' situation.
I have been using the Artist Guitars, “RoboWinder Automatic Mechanical Tuner” for a couple of years now. Somewhere in between the R1 & R2 when it comes to features but essentially has everything I need and use. Half the price @ $79, very well made and continues to serve me well You could consider a comparison with the two winders! Cheers 👍🇦🇺
Great stuff Shane, I’ve gone up from the version 2 and it’s been worth every bit. Especially 1/2 tone drop E flat. The string winder saves stuffing around and yeah it can really speed along ‘beware’ on high lol. Stay strong and safe. Setting to high accuracy it does fantastic job also telling it to tune up so goes little flat to in tune keeping the tension the wrong string thing seems to fade away as long as it’s holding it down on the peg head. 🤷♂️. Keep up the best Guitar utube show, still loving quality of my shirt and hoodie as we get cooler season coming. Maybe I’ll need a new coffee mug to use while restringing and jamming.. big fan Cheers 👍😎🇦🇺
I did set up a preset for bass on my Roadie 3. I don't use it often for bass, but it is handy to have the option, as the Roadie 3 is always to hand. I have found that it works better on 3 a side tuners and the high E on a 6 a side tuner is sometimes an issue. I think it might be to do with headstock mass and sensing the vibration of the string.
This things works, for the most part, but lately I've found mine wont tune the high E to an F. Even when I have programmed it on my phone and then syncd it, it still wont understand. Very frustrating
Very cool idea! Didn’t know it had so many features. I’d probably stomp it to death the first time I forget it’s in winding mode and break a new string.
I have no experience with this so I am going on assumptions. Since it isn't rated for basses, it must have plastic internal gearing. I wonder how well that will hold up over time.
From what I’ve seen it will wind and tune all in one no need to pull it off and switch back and forth. Look into it though and I think you find it’s even more awesome than you thought lol ✌️
You mention it is not as good to tune when the pitch has to go lower. If one wants to tune to a lower pitch (ie CSNY tuning EEEEBE). Will I be disappointed. I really would buy this for special tunings...
would've like to see the tuner in action while plugged into a strobostomp or some ultra fine tuner to see how accurate it really is. I bought a Gibson when they had the autotuners on and it was a neat idea, but the hardware programming was so flawed, was a shame. was nice to access tunings as the press of a button.. if it didnt take 30 tries. good review thanks
Great Review Shane! I’ve seen the older ones and they weren’t too good. Looks like the New Version works much better! Question: I got a Notice of your Review of the New SG Special but when I tried to watch it, it said it was for Private Viewing. Now I notice the Vid is gone. Are you going to put it back up so we can watch it here soon? Thanks man and Cheers from Salem, Ohio US.
That seems very cool would definitely come in handy when I wasn’t to change strings on my 6, 12 string acoustics and my Kramer guess I’d have to do it the old fashion way on my bass lol 😎
Somebody out there is already creating an attachment to be placed at the guitar which will allow the player to either communicate via cable , Bluetooth,or MIDI and allow the guitar to tune or retune to different pitches thus eliminating such device to be carry on 🤷🏼♂️
Thanks for the video. Could I set up a preset for 3 string GDg guitars on the roadie. I have to tune 20 or so guitars at the start of my craft shows and then again for each customer trial.
Update after one season of selling cigar box guitars at craft shows. This has been a life saver with 20+ guitars to tune at least once every show in the sunshine. Easy to set the custom GDg tuning. No squinting in the sun to read the Snark. 100% worth it for my particular needs.
I have this to replace my other Rodie. The one thing. I dont like is that it tunes my guitar a step down and. I dont know how to get it back up like my old Rodie had it. It does have a-lot of presets. I just need it for my 6 and 7 string.
I don’t mean to be a downer on the tuner but it seems like it would be aggravating to use. I didn’t like the fact that as you’re in winding mode, the tuner won’t stop winding when it reaches the pitch of the string your on. Plus the high string the unit didn’t want to recognize the pitch of the string.
The Batterie in my Roadie Bass died, too. Lastet one year and then held only the charge for one tuning, now it`s dead. Hope they improved the batterie lifew on the current gen. But as with all rechargable devices I don`t think they`ll last for more than a couple of years.
@Luke I was going through cancer shortly after buying it so I didn't get to use it for a couple of months after I bought it. I contacted them but never got a response
Interesting - good idea for many. I'm a sit on the couch, take my time restringing and tune up with a clip on while watching Netflix or something - it's actually relaxing and "pissis" off my cat😾. I think it might be a bit fiddly for gigs.
How big was that hammer that made contact with your finger? - that looks like it hurt. Great review. I think I'm fine with my clip on and manual winder I can put in a cordless driver. This is a tad pricey, perhaps a bit over-engineered for what it does.
I’ve used these, the version II. I don’t like “auto” anything. I prefer to do things myself, especially guitar related. They do do what they say it does but auto things aren’t for me. I’m still using my all analog Arion tuner from the early 90s. ;) And a manual string winder. Been good since 1994.
Expensive when you can buy electric string winder for £20 ish and a snark for £10 and to be honest its a bit of a gimmick but definitely cool. You still have to spend time stretching the strings a re tuning with new strings anyway.
if im too lazy to plug into my TU-2, I grab my Musedo t-28. Found one on tour years ago and ive only used those since. I got tired of throwing snarks across the backstage area
man, i just dont know about this. Cool, yes. It doesn't seem like it would same much time. My clip on, and board tuners work well and are faster tuning. Maybe for a guitar store or someone that has to do a ton of guitars in prep for an event.
Just for poops and giggles I’ll detune my guitar and tune it up by ear just to see how close I can get ...then I’ll put on my clip on tuner ...pop open a beer and..rock on ....PS...I change my strings once every six months os so whether I need to or not...and that folks is why they make beer 👍😎🎸
So, rather than listen to my reasons why you shouldn't buy one of these overpriced and inaccurate toys, just watch the numerous youtube reviews where they compare it's accuracy. None of the Roadies have ever rated highly and you should only waste your money, like I did, if you think that rough enough is good enough.
Lost interest when I seen that it has an internal battery. Like any battery, they have a life span and will not charge up eventually. A couple AAA's would have been a better idea.
Disappointed so far. Doesn't tune the G and B strings well at all even after going through the calibration exercise which I did on all 3 electrics I have. Honestly, using the harmonic tuning method yields better results than this device sorry to say.
Luke It will depend on how well it’s made. If it’s reliable in the long term, and not prone to early failure (eg with built in rechargeable battery or motor not up too snuff), then probably not unreasonable. I have my doubts though as it’s a pretty complicated gadget and complicated gadgets are rarely build to last these days.
In my opinion this has to be the most useless device ever. But... out of interest I checked the price, £142 for a tuner, metronome and string winder. Headstock Tuner £10 or less up to about £30 for something like a TC Pedal tuners £60ish for Boss or TC - Mooer, Donner etc much cheaper (and in my experience as accurate) Manual string winder from about £5 or less (In have 3 of them all free with Magazines over the years) Ernie ball powered winder, around £25. Metronome free smartphone app. Admittedly I've never seen one that vibrates but I've never really done silent practice where I've needed this and if I did I could get a Bluetooth earplug for a couple of quid, So pay £25 for winder, £0 for metronome, £10 - £60 for tuner) ... total £35 up to £85ish for a higher end tuner - and this would tune a bass as well!. or £142 for a gizmo gadget. In the UK CR2032 batteries are easy to find, every supermarket usually has plenty of them. As do a lot of corner shops. I have a few devices that use them so buy them in 8 packs from Amazon. I think I will invent a plectrum that can pluck strings, should be able to raise about a million in Kickstarter as they appear to be pretty gullible. String winder sounds useful but is it?, I'm a gigging player (or will be again one day). Admittedly Unlike Shane I don't change the strings every gig and most gigs I take 3 guitars, one is essentially just used on one song. Most of my gigging guitars have locking tuners which make string changing pretty quick when it is required. The time saved by this thing for most guitarists will be negligible. F'ing useless piece of crap that will end up at the bottom of the draw in less than a week. Even Shane says he mainly uses it for string winding. He got his given to him. I've one question to ask Shane. As you admit to mainly using the winder function would you pay the £142 asking price for the Roadie3 or £25 for an Ernie Ball string winder, £5 for a manual winder or do it by hand?.
@Luke True. That's why I put "in my opinion" (which has no value to anyone but me :) ). Truly I really cannot see the point of this for the sort of money they are asking. Minus the auto tune and vibrating metronome, you can get the same or better functionality for a much lower price. If these things retailed at a price to match say a boss tuner then it might be a different matter. I've no idea about the vibrating metronome, it takes a while to learn to play to an audible one so I'd imagine that a vibrating one would be even harder and would you use it often enough to make it worth while. Again speaking for myself; I have never thought "if only I had a silent metronome" And is having a box turn your tuners really worth that sort of expense for the majority of players? £142 ??? Again my opinion is that it is nothing more than an overpriced gimmick that will soon be forgotten by the majority of players even the gadget nuts who say "wow!!! cool, I must have one" when they first see it turning a tuner. But, if you've got enough money to spend on this, I believe I can find a London bridge I could sell you :)
Completely useless device as it does not tune UP to the note. It just as often tunes DOWN to the note, which guarantees that strings will quickly go out of tune, like during your performance! Don't waste your money!
Cool! Thanks for sharing this with us, Shane

Gibsons right? Jk... lol
Ty for the review.. been considering buying it and now I will

PRS makes a rechargeable clip on tuner..enjoyed the video

@@stanlee5465 I have a 2015 and love the tuning system. There’s a human element which is lost with these auto systems.

The Roadie 3 would make a great gift for a guitar player who already has everything.
A head-to-head race with a clip on tuner and a cheap speed winder would be interesting to see LOL. 🤔
Why did you put lol at the end of this statement?
Buzz Feiten Tuning System ?

Over kill for me I have locking tuners so not much winding involved. Also if it just a standard tuning a clip on polytuner would be quicker.
I purchased one of these tuners. I don't like it at all. It's way to expensive for a string winder which is what I'll be using it for.
Thanks for saving me some money. It’s hard filtering out all the bs sponsored content where people are paid for their "opinions"
Worth buying for the winding function! Was there a metronome vibrating watch I’ve seen advertised somewhere?
Yes. It’s made by Soundbrenner

Six months? You must be made of money! It's every six years for me.
Not really ...I buy used strings 😎🎸
This is what we should get rather then robot tuner
perfect for people with no hands who couldn't otherwise tune a guitar
So, rather than listen to my reasons why you shouldn't buy one of these overpriced and inaccurate toys, just watch the numerous youtube reviews where they compare it's accuracy. None of the Roadies have ever rated highly and you should only waste your money, like I did, if you think that rough enough is good enough.
Robotuner on headstock = uncool.
Detachable = cool.
LeftHand Power
Hah, cool gadget!
Lost interest when I seen that it has an internal battery. Like any battery, they have a life span and will not charge up eventually. A couple AAA's would have been a better idea.
Bit shocked by the price!
If you love that??? I have a 2013 Les Paul for you. Robot tuners .
$115 - Mom taught me not to say anything if It wasn't nice.
The metronome sounds like a duck!!! I’m curious how this would work in a live setting..
Disappointed so far. Doesn't tune the G and B strings well at all even after going through the calibration exercise which I did on all 3 electrics I have. Honestly, using the harmonic tuning method yields better results than this device sorry to say.
That's a very expensive tuner. $115 is too much for me. I'll stick with my $12 clip on.
Hi brother can you able to give me one guitar...
In my opinion this has to be the most useless device ever.
But... out of interest I checked the price,
£142 for a tuner, metronome and string winder.
Headstock Tuner £10 or less up to about £30 for something like a TC
Pedal tuners £60ish for Boss or TC - Mooer, Donner etc much cheaper (and in my experience as accurate)
Manual string winder from about £5 or less (In have 3 of them all free with Magazines over the years)
Ernie ball powered winder, around £25.
Metronome free smartphone app. Admittedly I've never seen one that vibrates but I've never really done silent practice where I've needed this and if I did I could get a Bluetooth earplug for a couple of quid,
So pay £25 for winder, £0 for metronome, £10 - £60 for tuner) ... total £35 up to £85ish for a higher end tuner - and this would tune a bass as well!.
or £142 for a gizmo gadget.
Again speaking for myself; I have never thought "if only I had a silent metronome"
And is having a box turn your tuners really worth that sort of expense for the majority of players?
So it’s not for you then!
The background music does nothing to help a tuner demo
Completely useless device as it does not tune UP to the note. It just as often tunes DOWN to the note, which guarantees that strings will quickly go out of tune, like during your performance! Don't waste your money!
What kind of sorcery is this???
Not as good as my old auto tuner. Hahahaha
🙄
I keep hearing easy to use…..no it’s not
Very Bad.
Does not get the E string . It is a sign for bad sensitivity.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Can it tune my wife ???
Shane gets sent the latest gadget for free, and wonders if it's "worth it?"...? Hahahahaha🤣😂😭
(Just teasing, Shane! It looks really cool, actually)
