HIDDEN GEM Village: BAUEN Uri SWITZERLAND

- Bauen is what can be considered a true hidden gem among the Swiss villages. It lays by the shores of the Vierwaldstättersee (Lake Lucerne) and is often overlooked. Many people who visit central Switzerland do travel to Lucerne and the lake but often are unaware of the beautiful site of the canton of Uri. Bauen is not only a hidden gem but also considered being one of the most beautiful villages of Switzerland. Bauen is best to be visited by boat from Brunnen, hiking down from Seelisberg or otherwise by car. The arrival by boat is definitely going to be the most unique. As you are walking through the village of Bauen, you will notice the many palmtrees and Mediterranean vegetation. This is due to the unique climate present in Bauen; it’s usually quite warm during the year. With its Mediterranean vibes and the many palm trees, this village is very inviting to visitors. The village of Bauen has some beautiful traditional houses and an iconic church that are quite eyecatching. The church looks good from the village perspective but even more beautiful, if you are hiking up towards Seelisberg. Just after a couple of steps, you will be reaching 2 to 3 great lookout points at where you can overlook the village of Bauen and the prominent church. Furthermore, in Bauen there is the house of Alberych Zwyssig, the composer of the melody for the Swiss Psalm (national anthem). Should you arrive during warm Summer days, do not forget to go for a swim at the lake! However, make sure to swim during the early afternoon as otherwise the sun will be gone! This perfect hidden gem Swiss village is good to combine with a visit to Brunnen or Altdorf (UR).

With the palm trees, the town looked like it was lifted out of Switzerland & placed in SE Asia. So surprisingly close to Lucerne. Great video!!

I am Swiss, 52 years old, and hiked to Bauen just today for the first time in my life. I was stunned to see palm trees and experience this mediterranian flair usually to be expected in our most southern Kanton of Ticino. If you haven‘t been there yet (or Switzerland in general) take a ride with the ship from Lucerne. The whole region around this lake is worth the trip in every aspect.

There are several places in Central Switzerland with a so called micro climate that enables palm and even chestnut trees to thrive. Weggis is one of those places and Walchwil in the Canton of Zug for example. What all those places have in common is they are all located right at a lake with many sunny hours and protected from strong cold winds, usually coming from North.

There is no end to the beautiful villages in Switzerland. The water in the lakes are such beautiful turquoise. I have been to Lucerne, and the whole region is fantastic, so I will have to check out this village. I knew about palm trees in Lugano, but did not know they were in the German section of the country..

Hey. Beim Strandbad sollte es Umkleidekabinen geben, sonst halt ins Lido in Luzern gehen. Hat zwar mehr Leute aber ist sicher besser ausgerüstet.

Hi James. Yeah I guess there temperatures are different at where you live; exotic and truly a paradise. Are you from New Zealand or any of these island countries like Fiji, Samoa? I have unfortunately never travelled to this region. But I would love to! The word cold is pretty relative; to people from Skandinavia this might be even very warm and both of us would probably hardly understand their perception :) It's interesting how we look differently at the same things.

Hi Peng-Qing. Yes, I would say so. The other villages are nice but they got many modern buildings (like terrace appartments) that change the appearance, something that Bauen does not have.

Hi. I'm going to Switzerland next year. Can you give me suggestion what town I should stay in? I prefer small town over big city like zurich or geneva.
The last time I was there I stayed in st. moritz for only 1 night (which I deeply regret, I should have stayed longer). It was really beautiful place, might be top 3 places I've ever been. But I wonder is that even the best switzerland can offer?
I am looking throughout youtube, instagram, google. All of switzerland towns are really beautiful and I got overwhelmed. I cant pick 1 of them. Hence why I am asking. I would like to stay in 1 town and explore the surrounding nearby within 2 hours train ride max.
Hi Efan. Selamat pagi dari Switzerland! I suggest you to stay at villages and not at cities or touristy places that might be expensive. Sankt Moritz is known to be for the very upper class and thus is quite costly. I can suggest you to watch my "Top 10 Villages of Switzerland" Video and my "Top 10 Places I visited in 2020". These migth give you new inspirations. I hope they serve you well.
@djemographic - the palms also grow in Vitznau and the surrounding area - maybe they only grow in that region, not just that village :)
Hi Daniel. Yeah, they also grow here in North Switzerland, where I live. Bauen is unique, because it feels very mediterranean and it's really full of palmtrees because they grow specially well. Ticino is where palmtrees are even more prevalent.
