- Dr. Ebraheim’s educational animated video describing bursitis of the knee.
The knee bursa is a small fluid-filled sac located between the front of the kneecap (the patella) and the overlying skin). This bursa allows the kneecap to slide freely underneath the skin as we bend and straighten the knee.
This bursitis causes pain, swelling, tenderness and a lump in the area on top of the kneecap. It may be very difficult to kneel down and put the knee on the floor due to tenderness and swelling.
Type of knee bursitis:
1-Suprapatellar
2-Prepatellar (most common/popeye knee)
3-Infrapatellar
4-Pes anserine
Causes:
Trauma
•Direct injury or fall onto the knee can damage the bursa with development of sudden large swelling.
Occupational kneeling
•Bursitis is chronic and develops slowly as seen in carpet layers, tilers, wrestlers, etc.
Infection
•Inspect the bursa for any breaks in the skin leading to infection.
•Red, hot, painful and swollen bursa is a sign of possible infection.
Inflammation
Treatment of patellar bursitis includes:
•Anti-inflammatory medication
•Antibiotics if infection is suspected or confirmed
•Ice therapy
•Aspiration: send the fluid for culture and crystals.
•Surgery: debridement & excision of the bursa.
•Protective covering should be placed around the knee while avoiding activities that aggravate the condition.
I flew off my Segway and ended up in the hospital. this video is more educational than the info given to me at the clinic and at the hospital. thank you :)
I took a nasty fall a couple months ago and since then my knee has had a soft spot. I treated it as a sprained knee but it didn’t go back to its normal shape. The only thing I could find online was about a bursitis so I went to my doctor and she confirmed. She said to keep icing and wrapping it but it has not gotten better and feels so much different than my other knee so I’m planning on going to an ortho clinic tomorrow. Thank you for this video now I know what to expect!
I ragout like this video. Today, my Dr said I have bursitis in the knee, but I didn't know what that was. She explained, but was still confused. This video is very clear and precise. Thank you for clearing things up. :)
+Giggles Excellent Video! Sorry for butting in, I would appreciate your initial thoughts. Have you heard about - Dinanlinson Rocky Position Approach (search on google)? It is an awesome one off guide for learning how to fix chronic knee pain minus the normal expense. Ive heard some awesome things about it and my close friend Aubrey at very last got great results with it.
I love how your tone of voice changes at the end of the video. Great video doc. Thanks.
Hey doc thanks for breaking this down. I was a little too active at work and woke up with this pain right on top of my knee. Nothing like the old injuries. This aches and hurts especially when I need to sleep. 2 more days of this and I will be in urgent care.
Thanks❤
Hi Doctor, Thank you for showing all of the types of knee bursae. I'm trying to learn more about the suprapateller bursa as I've been dealing with a lot of swelling in that area, as well as pain around my pes anserine bursa. I'm working with a PT to strengthen my hips and knees, but am wondering if this is a bursitis, arthritis, or perhaps a tear. No need to comment, we're figuring it out. Just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge and say that I really enjoyed your humor at the end of the video. Thanks again :)
Thank you so much.. for explaining everything. May God bless you
This Doctor is the best
I had infra patellar, one time in my right knee, at that time I use to do wood floors, was painful but, not that bad.
This time happened in my left knee, I'm not working with floors anymore, but still working hard!
I decide to but my legs way high with several pillows, i stayed like that for about 1 hour, ones I put my leg down I had the worst pain ever, (felt like somebody was trying to pull my legs apart) my wife had to take me to the emergency room because I couldn't stand the pain!
Claudio
thank you very much
very helpfull fro my med class thank you so much continue your videos thanks for all the help.
Dr Nabil you are the best.Thank you .
@arabicarts thank you

ultrasound is good for the diagnosis and injection
@Tebraheim thanks
Thanks good video
thanks for the video...
Can the pes anserine bursitis come from a meniscus tear, arthritis or just trauma ?
Thank you.
Awesome explanation
Thums up
THANK YOU JOE
Thank.you.so.much.sir.
Professor Ebraheim! Your videos have continuously led me back to you for pinpointing any suspected [non-threatening] joint pain :) I even send my friends who are unsure and curious of the pains/symptoms your videos. Now I have a question sir, how would I be able to distinguish my pain above the knee from being either an injury to the Suprapatellar bursa or the Quadricep tendon? Pain is most felt when knee is fully straightened. I was an avid bicyclist for many years if that helps. Thanks!
Thank you for explaining bursitis to a layman. I went to a doctor and he drain my infrapatellar bursitis. He stated there is nothing I can do from it reoccurring. I will try ice and anti-inflammatory drugs. Thank you and may G-d Bless.
if the bursitis is due to knee osteoarthritis, what will happen if leave it alone and not treat by aspiration ? will the accumulation of synovial fluid cause any later problem if not aspirated? can that accumulated fluid be absorbed with electrotherapy without any aspiration?
A Big Thank You..
Thanks.
Thanks for the video
Can bursitis be treated with PRP injection? specifically prepatellar bursitis...and how does it work (if PRP can indeed be done)?
I'm 16 and made an awkward move in soccer training the other day, I can still run, but my knee is swollen and I can't bend it all the way, swelling is slowly going down. I guess it isn't that serious then right?
Same happened with me 3-4 days ago.
I got x-ray today.
So doc had suggested me a knee cap, complete bed rest for 2 days and put a pillow under your knee while sleeping.
Also you should consult a doctor before playing again as it can cause more harm
@@dexterggmu ye its all good again, had a partial tear of my meniscus ligament. So I just have to wear a brace.
i have a swollen knee (due to direct impact) 18days now. It only get a little bit better since day 1. My doctor don't want to do aspiration for me. Do you know why ?
My Physical Therapist told me yesterday that I have bursitis of my left knee on the inner side due to inflammation brought on by not walking properly from severe foot injury in July. I have had terrible pain in my left leg from my hip to my foot and the worse is the constant and sometime severe aching of my shinbone. I am not able to walk or stand on that leg much without terrible burning pain in my left thigh going down to my shinbone. It aches so much at night that sleeping is difficult.
How long before it buggers off,
My infrapatella has some hard swelling on it what do i fo for that
sir,
how to differentiate between infective from non-infective knee bursitis?
prt2: 2 yrs ago i had a surgery, and the doctor told me we'r gonna cut the bone, but not all of it, since mine is like 2 inches clear out, he said 6-8 wks, you should be bck to normal, then after 8 wks, he said it can tk 5-6 months to recover, then i moved from tht town, now its been over 2 yrs, and the level of pain is the same if not worse, and for my left knee he cut some of my nerves which mking me not feel tht spot, your ADVICE plz. thnks in advace
I was working on my woodworking on my knee for staining and later that day I literally crawled on my knee up the stairs with my 10mo son and next night I developed what I think is bursitis... hurts so much
Great video, thanks! I have "pre-patellar" bursitis that suddenly appeared after a leg training session in the gym (squats and lunges). NO PAIN when still, on movement or when loaded whatsoever, have performed another lower body session again and no worse. Daft question, but would I be best NOT doing any lower body work until it's subsided, or carry on if it's not getting worse or painful? Appreciate your input.
thank for the video!
although i got scare at the end
I have my Pes Anserine inflamed, and I don't know why....And I am only 12! Is it normal for my age group to get this? Could it possibly be from gymnastics? Would ice treat/cure it? Please help me out or give me some advice! :)
Thank you i have it befor 2day until now itake antiiflamation (diclogesic ) but its not helpfull ..and am trainer in agym ...and icant stop my work do you have any suggestion Instead of taking alot of Pills plz
Thanks
U think I have the infrapatella
I am not sure if she is correct because most of my pain is on the outer left knee and upper outer left thigh and sometimes hip but the worse is the shin pain. I have been housebound since July from foot injury and now severe pain in left leg. Vicodin does little to relieve the constant aching. I have been walking with a limp since July which she believes is the cause of my leg pain. Whatever position I lie on causes me sometimes unbearable pain in my left shin and knee.
Thank you for explaining everything articulately. I've been dealing with this for about a week now, and it's very difficult for me to perform my daily functions as an HVAC Technician. I tore the meniscus in my other knee about 5 years ago, but luckily made a good recovery. My question now is what career field shall I pursue next because HVAC is tearing my body up lol.
That's so sad to hear you are still suffering from this same situation. Am feeling for you right now, I know of a doctor who can help you get rid of this. He also help me from this same situation, He can also help cure yours permanently

prt1: Dr, plz. i need your advice, I was going to email you, then when I found that your following up on your uploads, I hv a question: I've been having bursa since i was a kid, i guess i paid attention to it first when i was 10, now I'm 28 and still suffer. its is infrapatellar one, but it does not feel like liquid, it is more of a hard bone, it hurts especially when I bend my knees, I can't bend and pressure them such as when exercising or prying, or crying while i'm bending, follows
thanks so much for this video, very helpful!
Forget Morgan Freeman or David Attenborough, I want this guy to narrate my life.
I have knee bursitis sometime I'm 11 and there's a lump beside the knee and I'm telling y'all it hurts when you move it😢
Only 20 dude I have this From an old injury
@Sharpbevel thanks
Trained BJJ for ten years, as soon as I’ve had a three month lay off from BJJ this had flared up on both knees.
Hey :)
I'm in gymnastics too, and funny thing - my pes anserine is also inflamed. This injury was from landing short (on hands and knees) after a double back. Did you perhaps fall on your knees at some point in gymnastics or another sport? It's would be quite normal for someone your age to get this injury :)
Take it easy and ice your knee to keep down inflammation :D
@kkt2004 PRP IS NOT PROVEN FOR THE BURSITIS
I was kneeling down on my knee putting alot of pressure on it i didn't mean to i was in a bit of a awkward postion and couldnt balance out my weight and my knee made a crack sound i can walk on it siort of run on it but when i bend it while sitting or laying down it hurts i cant kneel and i am only 15 i cant even kneel i am not sure if it is bursitis but it may be worse it is extermely swollen compared to my other knee pla help
thank you for nice edecation matarial
@EWWassef thanks
great video. i had a "popeye" knee.
can you get bursitis below the LCL?
No, because there are no bursa in that area.
You should see an Orthopedic Surgeon for an exam and x-rays.
If you are having limited range of motion, swelling and pain, see a doctor.
I’m 13 and I think I have this because I used to play a lot of football / soccer before I was advised to rest it and stop I have pain at the bottom of the knee cap and it feels swollen I’d looks slightly inflamed I went to the doctor a while ago and they said I most likely have Osgood Schlatters disease but they didn’t really know the symptoms of Osgood Schlatters wasn’t what I was having this looks and sounds more like what I have it’s not the largest inflammation but you can see it I struggle to get out of bed and walk down the stairs Etc. I just need some help finding out if it’s Osgood Schlatters bursitis or just something else I’m not sure
@mkhristov thanks
@drvdedania thanks
@Chinchillin33 I'm aware he did not, I thought he did but now it seems that my surgery needs a surgery.
@ilovciel will not help a lot

Took a bump at work. No biggie. Several hours later, could barely walk. Pain comes and goes. Maybe 20 steps and it's almost normal.
Worked 5 hours of OT today, got home took off my jeans and it was swollen and red
The knee is a joint. Chiropractors fix joint problems
He said feel how it's hot to touch? It's infected. Go to urgent care
They said go to work care
Doctor there took one glance at it and said Ah that's easy. You need penicillin
I'm allergic, doc
Well that's all we have. I'm going to write you a referral for the emergency room
Oh for fuck's sake. It can't be that bad
Door number one: Emergency Room injects antibiotics and you're good to go
Door number two: within 12-24 hours, you're going to need emergency surgery
Door number three: Ignore it and the infection will spread throughout your body. It will start shutting down your organs, and you'll die.
Fuck me
So I went to the ER. They took vitals, drew blood, multiple x-rays, ultrasound, and pulled a fluid sample from my knee. That one felt fucking amazing! Almost felt as good as my vasectomy needles did.
Knee fluid looks like piss. But mine was also a little white cloudy. Lab results show infection
Got intravenous antibiotics and 2 prescriptions.
Gotta get Rx tomorrow.
0/10 would not recommend
Gotta follow up with orthopedic specialist and work care doc
Thank God for L&I or whatever. I'm already behind on my bills
Thanks
