Bro, holy crap, thanks. I've always struggled using sharpening stones because I can't keep a proper angle. The quarters tip is crazy, I appreciate you.
I think you will find that it won’t help that much, most of the skill is keeping the angle as you go through the motions and if you notice the coins are not constantly under the knife.you can buy a small tool that stays with the knife and keeps a perfect angle at all times and they don’t cost much at all.
Heck yes, thank you! Everyone always talks about specific angles and how to find them, but practicing with the quarters until I'm familiar is an amazing idea. You rock!
No offense, but this is terrible advice unless you want to ruin your edge. The best way to find your angle (which is different for every blade) is to lay it flat against your stone, then lift it *just* until the apex touches the stone. 3 quarters stacked will create varying angles depending on the width of the blade you're trying to sharpen, getting you nowhere.. slowly.
@@mytrigger5613 Right, and even if you just stick with a common angle, like 20 degrees for example, you'll only wind up reprofiling the edge on some of your knives. Which ain't fun lol!
Dude thats an awesome piece of advice. The first stone i ever bought was a rough 80 grit and came with a little ramp at a 30° angle. Totally helped get the muscle memory
Watched this video to try and sharpen my knife, i was able to get a pretty satisfying result. Instead of using the motion depicted here I found it easier to first hold the knife parallel to the stone and then sliding it towards me while slowly curving the knife towards the tip.
A magnetic angle guide with a level would help any beginner. I got mine on amazon but i havent used it with whet stones. But i have restored a razor sharp edge with the ceramic part of a sharpal pull through sharpener, by putting the level right on the back of the knife where it can lay flat. Its made for flat surface stones though.
King is great value for a whetstone but I actually recommend a diamond stone(sacc one costs about 20 bucks) at least for learning bc if you mess up your angle you wont dig into the stone and also you dont need to wet it for 10 minutes. Also a strop is nigh on mandatory for a truly sharp edge
Weird how after I bought a new whetstone this vid comes up. I already know how to sharp my knifes and my other cutters always want me to do it for them. And then they dull it after a day already lol. I sent this to some of my co workers
The coins are just a guide to the correct angle, not everone knows how to sharpen a knife. I'm sure he doesn't use them when he's actually sharpening his knives
If you don't apex and create a burr it will never be sharp, and if you don't remove the burr at the end it will make your knife feel dull after a single use, if you don't know what that means then you need to look it up before trying to sharpen, it's pretty simple, but he did not even explain the basics
I feel ashamed. Almost 30 years old but don't know how to shaken a knife. Now i do. It reminds me of guys that don't know how to change a tire. Well i know how to change a tire but don't know how to sharpen a knife. Why didn't my dad teach me this! Dad's teach your kids the little things in life!
Honestly, some videos make this seem like some form of wizadry - nice to see a video keep it simple! The process really isn't as hard as some like to make out!
@KarenActivator1000 He is cutting on a regular paper, use NEWS paper 📰 🗞, If you know anything about sharpening then you would know that this stone he is using is for beginners, it looks like a 400 grit 1000 grit stone, he didn't use a high quality stone or a Leather strop for a finish, how can you not tell? How long have you been sharpening knifes? What type of steel do you sharpen?
@CadillacDriver if they are telling the public that they had make a breakthrough, then you know they have already perfected it and are advancing. But read about MinD-Vis
Yeah, conveniently forgetting to mention that the hardest part is to keep that angle while moving the blade. Finding the angle on a pre-sharpened knife if piss easy btw.
Me who live in a country whom never use coin. Useful but not applicable. Also I though moving you knife up and down hurt the blade? I was taught somewhere to only move in one direction
So...follow this example, and you will end up with ruts in your stone. But hey, that's why a virgin stone is being used for this tutorial. Gullible's Travels. (Other people have pointed out different errors. Aside from The strange Capitalisation for The title Of the Video...)
That’s what I was saying. I have Damascus steel blades that can not be sharpened the same way like for say my Kbar. Then the back and forth motion idk about that I’ve nvr tried that method.
Try a paper fold it in a 90 degree angle (in half) than again in half makimg it 45 degree and than again in half making jt 22.5 witch is the right angle hope this helps
the easiest way to make a sharp knife or scissors blunt is to cut paper. So using a piece of paper to demonstrate is stupid. Plus, even the bluntest scissors or knife will cut paper…it proves nothing.
That doesn't work, that would only work if your knife already had that angle. The easiest way to do it is to lay your knife flat. While sliding your knife forward lift the spine your knife until you feel your knife grab. Verify with a sharpie.
If you're knife is super dull, then you will need to go to a coarser/lower grit stone like a 300 or 400 grit to establish a new edge. Then when you have removed enough metal, and you feel a burr, then you can move on to a 1000 and then polish/refine the edge and finish on a 6000 grit stone.
I never ever sharpened my knife for 14 years and now im about to try it. Thank you!

Such a simple tip. I’ve always held the knife to low the quarter got me in point
Hey, thank you! Never seen that method before cool share👍
The Quarter trick only works with knifes the same width as in the video. It would make a 35 degree angle on my office knife

What angle approximately are you getting with the quarters??
Awesome. Thanks bro
Good idea bout the angle. Ty

your save my knifes
I bought a craftsman knife in walmart with its sheath and really i never tries to sharpen them till today im go buy a whetstone
Great example
And here i was sticking a quarter or half my knuckles past the knife as a angler
the quarters are only good for the starting stroke. after that, unless you have some sort of guide your angle can be plus or minus.
I have a 6000 grit and 1000 grit. It’s a duel block. 6000 to high?

If it's alumina, then you can use oil which is more convenient.

15-20 minutes
