Richard always seemed fragile but when he was well his voice was incomparable. Some people never die and he's one of them for me...'with you in sight the lost are found'.
+Clem Well observed my friend !! I suppose there are always two sides to every story, but as much as i admire Robbie as a fellow guitarist, I tend to feel that he could have done more to help the boys in the band when they needed it. Yes, he would have written most of the songs, but helping friends in need did,nt seem to be part of his agenda?? PS>>>..God bless Garth too of course. hope he is well and happy.
Richard wrote the melody and vocal melody, while Robbie Robertson wrote the lyrics on this one. A fantastic collaboration. Poor Richard. Wish we could time travel and save him, Rick, and Levon, too.
The lead-in to this is at the end of Chest Fever (track 14). Which, by the way, is just an epic performance in his natural range. Anyway, someone requests Whispering Pines, and he's hesitant and says "I don't know if I can hit that one. Hum if I miss it."
I agree Mike. And I believe a lot of his problems after he sobered up came from the fact his music he wrote was stolen from him, leaving yet another empty hole in his life. Sad thing. He was such an amazing singer/composer and he did give it his all. So much soul in this mans voice. I miss him :-(
His vocal control is actually fantastic. As a person that struggles with that same vocal range I can say that he does that kind of more gentle tone on the higher notes so cleanly, and it is NOT easy to do.
Richard wrote the melody, and Robbie wrote the lyrics. Another example of a talented musician, that succumbed to the demons associated with drugs and alcohol.
I'm guessing you didn't see the king sang unchanged melody in 77. 6 weeks before he passed. Rest in peace Richard my favorite from the band. And almost any band. Tx
Just found this recently, thanks so much for posting this beautiful raw version of one of my favorite songs from The Band. Now I know why Ben Franklin named his almanac after this guy! His loss was all of ours.
Sadly, one of Richard's worse days and yet no one else could deliver this song. The emotion, the real emotion. When I listen today and compare the forced emoting by the likes of Kid Laroi or Justin Bieber, I really feel sorry for the kids who missed Richard and other singers like Ray Charles
The best EVER, but not here. Too much partying and singing falsetto w/o proper traing for long term voice preservation. This was 85 and he died in March of 86. This is my favorite Band song, and the my favorite song period. Been listening to the beautiful studio version for 43 years. Saw them 27 times in concert from 1970 until one concert after the Last Waltz. They never did this song.
@@xtho7999 Wish I did meet them. Most were in New York. I actually went to two that were postponed. In the 70's you found that out when you got there. Of course those two were about 60 miles away (NJ). I did go to Watkins Glen.. First and second concerts were on the same night. We had front row seats at the Waldman Skating rink in Central Park. Tickets were $2.
i dunno. i don't think another human being could ever sing this song any better than richard on his worst day, he had such an amazing gift
totally agree, I just listened to Jakob Dylan's version, doesn't have one tenth of the soul that Richard gives it.
God rest his lovely, beautiful, talented, tormented soul. May he have found peace at lastl
Right on
You are still remembered Richard, you are considered one of the finest singers ever, you are one of the few that made me cry with some songs vocals.
Richard always seemed fragile but when he was well his voice was incomparable. Some people never die and he's one of them for me...'with you in sight the lost are found'.
all these years gone by.............but I still miss him, Levon and Rick so much. Angels all three.!
+Bubbacat54 not Robbie though hahaha

After reading Robbie's book, you might see things differently. I know I do.
Hard to listen to this without tearing up. Sure miss Richard.
best voice i've ever heard
it is in rotterdam new york
the truth amen
agree from japan
Every time I think about Richard Manuel I cry...
Me too. Bless him. x
mee too わたしも
He was amazing, and so tragic.
It's heartbreaking to hear his voice break ,in a way it's fitting for the song
so true
Makes no difference how many years pass..I will Never stop loving Richard..
One of my favorites. Besides the great vocal performance and words, the piano playing is lovely. Richard gave us so much love.
Can still make me cry.
OMG ...me too.
I am cring now
Kind of a rough recording but man...... Richard was perhaps one of the top 10 greatest vocalists in rock n roll history
So many peeps are missing out on the pure QUALITY that was THE BAND. Clapton knew, Harrison knew....they ALL KNEW.
Amen Brother ....Richard had it in spades. Love and peace
If you can get yourself a copy of this CD- do it! It is full Richard's raw voice power. It is not perfect by any means, but a lot of powerful music.
Richard wrote the melody and vocal melody, while Robbie Robertson wrote the lyrics on this one. A fantastic collaboration. Poor Richard. Wish we could time travel and save him, Rick, and Levon, too.
切ない…切なすぎる
リチャードの歌声は魂の叫びのようで
いつまでも貴方が大好きです
such a great loss.a wonderful singer.tragic we could not help him.

God Bless you Richard for your talent, r.i.p gentle soul
Richard was just AWESOME! RIP Richard,,,,
I agree even when he couldn't sing at his best he put his all into all his music. Too bad he couldn't get any help for his problems :( R.I.P Manuel

inatizzy2 Not sure how selling your publishing rights amounts to theft.
One of my most favorite tunes by the Band!
Same here
His vocal control is actually fantastic. As a person that struggles with that same vocal range I can say that he does that kind of more gentle tone on the higher notes so cleanly, and it is NOT easy to do.
I am wondering if the transition from the soft voice to the natural voice was intentional. The song is "whispering" pines.
A fragile soul with a foreboding rendition of vulnerability personified.
Richard wrote the melody, and Robbie wrote the lyrics. Another example of a talented musician, that succumbed to the demons associated with drugs and alcohol.
I think some of the imagery in the lyrics was Richards though. Read that somewhere.
@@sadhvacman7238 I think Robbie took from Richard Rick and Levon some of their voice and personalities when he was writing.
he was so............................wonderful.
Miss you, Richard,Rick, Levon!❤
The must beautiful voice in the band but Levon rains in heaven.
SO amazing that this group could come up with such haunting music. Been a fan for long years now.
Like seeing Elvis in '77.... Damn the world!
I'm guessing you didn't see the king sang unchanged melody in 77. 6 weeks before he passed. Rest in peace Richard my favorite from the band. And almost any band. Tx
loved this man beyond .......

so sad yet so amazing he still gives it all his soul even though he cant sing it perfect
You can feel the hirt when he sings this song. Peace Out and Love MMLZZ
Missing Richard….
Incomparable voice.
ah richard - it's sad to listen to this...........
Gracias Richard por enseñarnos a cantar con el alma!!!
gracias

Love ya Rich ❗❗❗
Thanks a lot for posting this. What a beautiful song.
Thanks very much foresting this. Wonderful.
If he'd only made a solo album
Hurts my heart....
A beautiful song
He seems so happy when he finishes “Natural Fade!” Him joking around to is great “Slave Drivers” I love it.
涙が出る・・・・・ I love his voice......
The Band had two high voices. Richard was the high and lonesome ...that could sing low with Soul.
Richard voice was ragged here, but still effective.
Happy 70 birthday sadly missed
Im still here.
I was there! 😢
The man could fit right into Steely Dan. Same vocal nuance, same poetic power.
GREAT!
Miss you richard
Awesome
never heard a Bieber song at all. this song I heard almost every day since 6 years. wanna thank my soul for the good choice.
So sad his voice had gone ....
Just stopped me in my tracks.
Maybe rugged but so feeling!
is it my imagination or is someone in the crowd doing levon's part at 2:22 "Standing by the well" ??
I think Danko was there doing backup iirc
Good catch
Can't hear it
👍
Richard lost so young so sad so
The Getaway!!!!!! Was this the club on the border of SaugerStock???

The drugs and Alcohol really screwed up his voice. You can really hear how bad it got in on some 76 recordings.
27 times? Incredible? Did you just gl city to city? At that point you must have met them

Tough song to sing. Richard is really struggling here
🤔...factory worker or "star performer"..addict is an addict..on a pedestal just farther to fall ..
if I comment I will be hated
