I didn't care about the Little Mermaid story (being someone first exposed to the Dianey adaption, which I disliked when I was little) until I was exposed to the 1975 Japanese animated movie in elementary school (which is a faithful adaption) and read the actual story, which I actually appreciate it.
I have the feeling that quite a few of Hans Christian Andersen´s fairy tales are really depressing, but I liked The Little Mermaid, and especially The Snow Queen is my all time favourite fairy tale (finally one by Andersen with a good ending), I very much enjoyed the focus on the main character´s quest. - I´m really looking forward what you think about Great Expectations, I find it amazing that Dickens is still to this day quite an inspiration to a lot of modern writers like John Irving.
Yes, Andersen's fairytales aren't exactly cheery... I liked the sort of episodic structure of The Snow Queen, it worked really well.

My mum read me the original when I was a little human. Hehe.
The original is so sad! But I like it, it's one of my favourite fairy tales. The ugly duckling too. :) I'm going to re read them now. :D
Yay! I loved The Ugly Duckling too; as a little human I only knew it as a song though, never as the original story. I don't think I really read/had read to me many fairytales when I was younger, Hansel and Gretel is one of the few I remember reading specifically. :)
Ohh! Is it the song that goes like this?: "There once was an ugly duckling! With feathers all fluffy and brown, and the other birds, with so many words said: Quack get out! Quack, Quack! Get out of town! So he left with a quack and a waddle and a quack!" That song used to make me cry so much...I cried at everything when I was little.
Ha, yes, that's the one!!! It is now stuck in my head which is a bit of a problem... I used to love that "All through the winter..." bit and the final verse. :D
Yeah :) My grandad sings that song a lot! :) Haha. It's stuck in my head now too....I'm going to have to try and figure it out on the ukulele! :D
Was a good book
I actually prefer Disney's version of the story because I just can't stand depressing endings but some people say that Ariel from Disney's version was a selfish brat that should've died otherwise she would've learned a lesson about thinking ahead if Vanessa wasn't Ursula but yet that movie was my passion.
I haven't seen the Disney film in a long time; I'll have to watch it again to see what I think!
Agree to disagree, the original is much more realistic and complex.
