Robin should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Ex guitartist of Procul Harem he left in early 70s to go solo. This album should be listened to in it's entirety one of the best ever. Saw him in 74 and opened my eyes and a whole generation to the blues. Ended up seeing him 5 time in Detroit at Cobo Hall and he sold out every concert. He filled the gap after Hendrix died and he did it so well. James Dewar the bass/vocalist was at the top of his game and was considered that. Imagine growing up with the music of the 70s , Queen, Robin, The Who, Black Sabbath, Yes, Stones, Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep etc. We were so lucky

That is why R&R HOF is a joke,. It took until the 2000s for both YES & THE MOODY BLUES to make it, heck even Ozzy Osbourne is not in as a solo artist. And how many "one hit wonders" are in?

I didn't hear this song for the first time on the FM Radio. It was 1974, my friend was getting a haircut, and I went along. He sat on the chair to get his haircut, and I sat in the waiting area chair. This song was already playing and pretty loud. I immediately asked the hair stylist "WHO THE HELL IS THAT!!!??? "Robin Trower," he said. Well, when my friend finished his haircut, we both walked into the record store which was a few businesses away. He bought the album and of course I did too!!!!!!!!!!

Robin Trower was the guitarist for the group Procol Harum before he left to do his own music. A couple of good examples of his playing with that group from the 1970 album "Home" are "Whiskey Train", and "Whaling Stories". At 76 years old, he still plays well and has tour dates lined up for next year. His big influence was Jimi Hendrix. The bass player is the singer in the group.

my two older brothers and i saw robin trower live at the swing auditorium in san bernadino, ca. we'd been listening to his bridge of sighs album non-stop for months. it was the summer just before 8th grade for me, and it was my first concert. robin trower walked on stage with his bass player and drummer, said bellow, and proceeded to play the entire bridge of sighs album without breaking at all. it was fantastic. a number of years later, my brothers and i were driving through fresno, ca. , and happened to look up at a theater marquee that said: mahogany rush, tonight. on a whim, we went. frank marino just leveled every person attending. he took us, the audience, to places we'd not planned on going... and it just kept on and on. amazing. we were losing our minds in the most extreme blues/rock guitar solos and riffs and chords. after 4 encores, mr. marino called a night. the lights came on, canned music began to play, janitors began sweeping. whereupon, every concert goer there, started stomping their feet. the place started to shake like crazy. then someone on a loud speaker started threatening the crowd with legal consequences, whereupon large objects , like chairs, stared flying we kept clapping and yelling for more. anything not tied down was in the air and a true riot started. thankfully, frank and his band came back on stage (after 10-15 of mayhem), and played two more encores.... fantastic .

Discovered Robin Trower - guitarist - during the 70's in my teens with this very album. I heard the title track and bought the album....then bought all those with vocalist the Late James Dewar who's tone so fitted perfectly with Robins playing. Those albums are wonderful. Years later I found out Robin was in Procol Harum. - Really ? so I looked at some old footage and there he was - I nearly turned a whiter shade of pale - who knew this guy would go solo and become the son of Hendrix ? A live album from 1976 live at Stockholm Concert Hall and a track called "Daydream" is pure utter bliss with some guitar sustain that will leave you gasping. Just a beautiful wonderful track leaving you happy & stunned at the same time....Yes there is a studio version - but this live version is on another level...."Daydream" you will float away......Other guitarists around the 70's + ? - "Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush" - He even does Hendrix cover versions & his solo albums are also incredible. He even sings like Jimi Hendrix. Great reaction to a great guitarist I've loved for decades. Thankyou.

Trower was in Procol Harum back in the late 60s. Try a Procol Harum song called A Salty Dog. A wonderful song and an incredible sailing tale.

I was a kid listening to early Beach Boys (they're great), but when my cousin played Bridge of Sighs for me it figuratively blew my mind. Floyd, Jimi, Cream, it all opened up.

Robin was the original guitarist with Procol Harum! Check out their albums "Broken Barricades" and/or "Home" - Power Failure - Simple Sister and Song For a Dreamer (Trower's homage to Hendrix) and the title cut Broken Barricades and from Home, About to Die, Whiskey Train and Still There'll be More are good examples of the band before Trower exited.

Saw Trower the 1st time in 75 opening for Humble Pie! What a gig! The next time was 78 and he was headlining, with Wishbone Ash as the opener.
I'm glad you two are digging the 70's sound. Enjoy your journey. ☮

Thanks Michelle Michelle! I requested Robin Trower a couple of times in my comments but I'm kind of new around here. I still was thinking maybe they picked it up from me! This is a great song for the day! Peace!

Then this is in your honor, John. Nick & Lex set up a system so we can donate to request songs (Buy Me a Coffee). I was lucky to get in quickly and paid to request a few. Right now, it’s closed until they catch up, I guess. But they will set it up again. 🤪

Will have to watch this after work! One of the greatest "Albums" ever created. Trower wasn't dubbed the "English Hendrix" for nuthin'.
Always loved the "change" and breakdown at the end to get everybody clappin' and feeling the groove, great way to end the album. One of my fave tracks on this one. Every song is soulful, and he makes his guitar scream and cry like the best of them. So glad you are discovering one of my favorite guitarists :D.
Opeth even does an awesome version of the title-track "Bridge of Sighs". Trower is a VERY respected guitarist by his peers.
    That chorus (those words):
"But that stone just keeps on rolling
Bringing me some real bad news
    Takers get the honey
    Givers sing the blues"
    . . . man, ain't _that_ the truth!
NickNLex . . . you guys hardly know Deep Purple??? WE all need to change this. Robin Trower, Ritchie Blackmore, Michael Schenker, Gary Moore and many others (from Judas Priest, early Scorpions w/Uli Jon Roth, Triumph and guitarist Rick Emmett), and heck, if you don't know DP, that means we'll need to get you guys into Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow with Ronnie James Dio! How do WE get you 2 into a lifetime of great music in a few weeks? :D
Note: Robin Trower (guitarist) is 76 years old and STILL touring. He comes to LA often and I have yet to see him.

He's an excellent guitarist is Robin Trower. I saw him a couple of times back in the early 70s, including Reading Festival in 1975. You'll enjoy a lot of his stuff.

Robin Trower played with Procol Harum .Whiter Shade of Pale being their biggest hit.
After going solo,he is the first guitarist to take what Jimi Hendrix used and was using until his death and attempt to keep experimenting with those particular effects, chord structures, scales, etc.
The Bridge of Sighs album is incredible and is an awesome continuation of that Hendrix sound.
There are many "tributes" and covers of Hendrix but very few have really tried to stay within a pure Jimi set up.
Jon Butcher/Jon Butcher Axis is another good example I think, and Eric Gales as well.

Robin is is still touring and recording today and he's well into his 70s. It's a different band now, as James Dewar on vocals and bass has passed and I believe the drummer also has passed. He has recorded three albums with Jack Bruce of Cream fame as well but he had a great run in the 70s and like a lot of his peers he continued to produce music but never got the accolades he got in the 70s. He was originally in the prog rock 60s band Procol Harum but left to form his own band.

Ooooh yea. Been following Robin Trower since he left Procol Harum. I concert with the driving bass of James and Robin’s screaming guitar left your heart pounding and ears ringing for hours afterwards.
In recommendation of other songs listed in comments I might add “Hannah”.👍

I used to have a cassette tape by Robin Trower, from I believe 82 called 'Back It Up'. I played one song over and over, it was called "Benny Dancer" The great Dewar just knocks it out the ballpark, Trower knows guitars.

As soon as a I saw you were reacting to Robin Trower I clicked like it was an emergency reflex. My friends and I would jam to his albums all the time which was a great way to learn for a bunch of 13 - 14 year old's. He used a phase shifter pedal btw (precursor to the flange). That classic Strat sound is quite like Hendrix and Ritchie Blackmore as you noted the Deep Purple sound. The entire album is Fire. 🔥😎👍🍁
