The Late James Dewar on vocals + bass was the perfect match for Robins guitar. Slow Blue's or Blues Rock, it is just wonderful combination. Daydream is my favourite song. It's just utter bliss and I have to say - The live version recorded at Stockholm Concert Hall from his 1976 album simply titled "Robin Trower Live" is amazing. The sustain on his guitar on this version is - Ooooo yea ! [ can't find the words ] & James vocals is smooth, mellow and beautiful. Yea my favourite track , studio & live versions. Blues is mainly emotionally melancholy driven. Love lost. Distant memories. An aching heart wishing to go back to a time you were happy. Singing the Blues....Feeling blue....Give Gary Moore a try. He really made his guitar cry. He could bend those strings further than any other guitarist. "Still Got The Blues" Try it. Love your reaction to such a great track Thankyou.
Your comments are spot on! Trower was great live, and the live version of this song is fantastic as well. Saw him twice in concert and as budding guitarist was in absolute awe of him. He has continued to put out great music over these many years.
A girl I was dating around the time I first discovered this song had a water bed, which was still a bit of a novelty then. I can remember us going out at night, getting stoned and then going back to her bedroom, lighting incense, turning on her black light, putting on this song, and we’d both get on the bed and just gently kick our heals and listen to this song--the bed waving to the beat of the music--such great memories :).
The late great James Dewar on lead vocals and bass. So under rated!! Trower was such a tasteful player. He just knew what to play and where. Love Trowers use of the univibe and wah pedals!! Good choice you two!👏👍
Trower power babies, love this guy. Early and later stuff is great. This early work was fantastic, the vocal is his bassist who had arguably the best un-celebrated voice of the 70's. Bridge of Sighs and Victims of the Fury albums were killer.
This was from his first album after leaving Procol Harum, and shows his Hendrix influence. (The kind of Hendrix rhythm playing that incorporates hammered embellishments to the chords, that they say was influenced by Curtis Mayfield). For a cover of a basic blues song by Trower, try the live version of "Rock Me Baby". Like Hendrix, he often used a Uni-Vibe pedal to get that swirling sound, and now has signature Fulltone overdrive pedals for distortion. At 76 years old, he still tours.
When I was 15 I had a good friend who was a guitarist like myself. He put this album on and asked me, “Who do you think this is?” I hadn’t heard it before but the only name I could think to say was “Hendrix?”
Thanks for the background info. And glad he’s still touring. Saw him perform early to mid-2000’s. He had recruited Richard Watts, his son’s friend, to do vocals. I happened to know the guy running his front of house sound board, so we had great seats and got an invite backstage, but didn’t get to meet Robin. Excellent show, though. Thanks for the comment. 🤪
@@michelemichele3375 I saw him once with Procol Harum, and my favorite slow blues playing of his is on the song "End Game" from the album B.L.T., with Jack Bruce on vocals.
Robin Trower Live! Daydream lead live is extended quite a bit, and the 20k in the crowd are just mesmerized. It's truly the best version of this song. In fact, all his songs have more energy live. Day of the Eagle, Bridge of Sighs, Twice Removed from Yesterday, Fool and Me, all great.
Trower uses rather heavy strings and is not afraid to use lower notes/tones in his solos. He has fingers and hands of steel which allows him to perform some of the most perfect vibratos in the business. He does play “a lot of chords” as Nick alluded to, many times utilizing “thirds” to get that sound. James Dewar not only had the perfect voice to accompany Trower’s playing but was a very accomplished bassist as well. Many thanks again for this playing. Loved both of your reactions and comments.
Listen to the entire Robin Trower Live album . My best friend turned me on to that one and Frank Marino Live about 1977. Both guitarists and albums were my favorite from that point on and to this day. Robin is a genius and very nice and humble man. I see him every chance I get and he never disappoints. It's great seeing this white haired old man plug in his axe and melt everyone's face off.
I saw Robin Trower on several occasions since the 70s. Most recently about 4 years ago. Always a fantastic show. He's going out on tour 2021-2022. He's in his 70's and he is still an amazing guitarist.
Some of his other songs you might enjoy are Bridge of Sighs, Fool and Me, and Day of the Eagle. Jeff Beck is another great guitar player you might want to check out. I especially like his Blow by Blow album. Freeway Jam and Cause We've Ended As Lovers are two of my favorites.
How F---in great is this song! I also requested this after your previous Robin Trower offering. Amazing song from an album that, at the time of its release, was largely ignored until his next album “Bridge of Signs” came slamming on to the rock, rock/blues music scene. Way to go guys!!!:)
Now you've discovered one of the greatest guitarists of all time! James Dewar on vocals! Great stuff, if you want good blues-rock solos check out his songs "Benny Dancer" or the live version of "Bridge Of Sighs" from the album Beyond The Mist. I know you will really love them!
Yeah...!!! Robin Trower!! JUST PLAY THE ENTIRE ALBUM "BRIDGE OF SIGHS"... YOU WILL LOVE IT ALL!!! OK. Blues... next! You have to check out Joe Bonamassa!!! Try "The Whale That Swallowed Jonah"... from hi "DUST BOWL" album. He is an amazing guitarist, and singer too! I've seen him live... Awesome! Enjoy! Regards, ALinCAL
Awesome. If you loved this one then there are lot's more Trower jems for you to enjoy. "Bridge Of Sighs" is Robin's most famous tune. Well worth checking out.
LOVE IT..I GREW UP IN THE 70'S AND WAS REALLY INTO HIM..STILL LOVE HIM BUT WOW,WHAT AN IMPACT HE MADE ON TEENAGE KENT! MUCH LOVE TO YOU TWO..KENT IN OHIO
Have you checked out some Robben Ford ? Example....Talk to your Daughter. He's a fine guitarist who helped form the fusion band Yellowjackets, but on his own he's a bluesy player.
I saw Robin twice, once in a small local club. He was always so upbeat and playful with his guitar. He had a semi-circle of Marshall amps that he'd move around in to work the distortion. And of course James's vocals were just so rock solid perfect for this music.
Fun reaction and nice to have you back after a few days off. Trower is definitely one of the unsung G.O.A.T.S. In the same vein I would suggest Jeff Beck doing Cause We Ended As Lovers. 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
The voice here is James Dewar, not Trower. The guitar is all Trower. According to what I've heard live over more recent years, Trower is playing better than he ever has.
That's the infamous vocals of James Dewar who played bass and lead vocal during Robin Trower's most prolific period in the 70's: Twice Removed From Yesterday, Bridge of Sighs, For Earth Below, Long Misty Days, and Caravan to Midnight. JD passed in 2002, but Robin Trower is still going with 36 albums to his credit. Arguably, one of the best power trio bands EVER! Robin's career has been earmarked with his signature Stratocaster and Fulltone pedals. Thanks for reacting.
Blues? How about Gary Moore: Still Got the Blues or Jimmy Page: Prison Blues or Alvin Lee: The Bluest Blues? All are worth a listen, guitar masters all. 😎
You know, I do like Gary's Blues phase, but what made me a fan was his "Metal/Heavy Rock" era. But personally as far as Blues, was a track that was overlooked because of that heavier era (maybe the last album that he played that type of music); "The Loner" off of "Wild Frontier". That track, he makes his guitar cry in pain, and maybe the audience listening as well :).
This happens to be one of my favorite tunes of all time. In my early twenties I was hanging out with the wrong people and got exposed to LSD... like a lot of young people those days. After a particularly long trip and having not slept for 36 to 48 hours, I would always put the headphones on and listen to Trower as I finally passed out from exhaustion. Listening to Trower playing through a phase shifter with good quality stereo headphones is almost an out of body experience for me. Near the end of the song, when he starts sawing on that fender for those 12 measures, is one of my favorite sonic experiences of all time. I can just feel about a thousand watts of energy coursing through my brain when he is sawing away. Absolutely love Trower and hope you will play more... like Bridge of Sighs.
Saw Trower in 70's on tour with King Crimson in Tampa. Honestly, I didn't think much of Trower, but in the last 20 years, my appreciation has grown tremendously. Then he played in BLT with Jack Bruce and it dawned on me how good Trower is and his early stuff.
I would love to see you guys do a video about your musical preferences. What genres/artists/bands did you listen to growing up, and what music have you discovered since you met??? We've heard you mention Dream Theater quite a bit, and Alan Holdsworth, Iron Maiden (that's all I can remember right now.) Btw, I love your opening graphic. So cool. (EDIT): Ok, so I just read your "About" page...that explains a lot. I see many artists listed in your influences/preferences that I love as well. What a great union of souls you are.
From his 82 album called Back It Up, the best Trower song 'Benny Dancer'. Gary Moore and Javier Vargas are two guitar masters to check out 😳. Gary Moore has a very good Blues vocal.
Robin uses a Univibe pedal especially in the earlier recordings. Not so sure he's used flanger, but early on, he used a lot of vibe pedals. Newer is the DejaVibe.
Robin Trower is one of my favorites! You got it on the second try! LOL I've requested it before, but try Be-Bop Deluxe- "Adventures in a Yorkshire Landscape." Even if you don't try it on the channel, I believe you'll really like the song, the band, and the guitarist/vocalist, Bill Nelson.
Great reaction, N&L! Appreciate your guitar knowledge, Nick ... and your Cat Power comparison, Lex (what a unique voice, huh?!). Trower does cite Hendrix as an influence, but also mentions Albert King and BB King. I like so many genres of music for the change of focus. Jazz can be more cerebral; Blues might hit more in the gut. 🤷🏻♀️ Lol. What I also like is finding the “family resemblance” in music - finding the Blues sound in Rock or the roots of Blues, Swing, Ragtime, etc. in Jazz pieces. And watching that evolution of each genre to its defining characteristics and sub-genres. So thanks for being open to reviewing a wide range of music. You both have the ears, the knowledge, and the heart to do any genre justice. We appreciate you and your channel. Your growth is stellar! Now, how was your visit and did you record any reactions with Lu? Hugs to the Marley Man. 🤪
James Dewar's vocals were once described by a journo as a Glaswegian alley cat being strangled in a dustbin (or something like that..!) which I can totally see. And I love it. Fullsome descrition, and actually the personification of a blues rock voice that works.
"Some legato"? LOL, the solo was almost all hammered (just kidding). In the early 70's phase shifters were used (before the flanger). I had an MXR 90 Phase Shifter back then that I bought when I was 14 for $45 (I saved for months). This song takes me back there. 🍁
Trower says his main inspiration came from BB King. He admired how BB would put so much emotion into every note he played. If you can't feel the emotion from Trower's guitar, you be either deaf or...................Blues has so many interpretations and just different styles. You mentioned Scott Henderson, check out his stuff with violinist Jean Luc Ponty. Yeah, Fusion jazz has just as many interpretations!
Robin really kills it on this song.Daydream is to me his best song and the live version from '75 Winterland concert is a must watch video, you see Robin and his guitar faces,as well as James Dewar on bass and vocals and Bill Lordan who replaced Reg Isidore on drums in '74.The best trio in the mid '70's was Robin,James and Bill.A great song by Robin that doesn't get much air time is A Tale Untold, you may really enjoy that one as well.If you want to see another master on guitar and who also sings is Frank Marino.Frank like Robin was influenced by Jimi, but each has their own ways of getting it done.Try watching Frank Marino from '78 on the tv show Midnight Special playing King Bee and Johnny Be Goode, both cover songs but really great versions,Frank is a guitar genious, and for one of his own songs watch It's Begun To Rain from Live at the Agora, but be sitting for that one as he will floor you with his talent.Robin and Frank will always take you to a better place with their solos. Thanks for doing Daydream!
All comments are great ive been a tower fan since I was 16 now im 60 and still love him all his early work with james deer on bass and vocals is great! But soon after deer had a stroke he put together a great 4 piece with a guy named davey Pattinson on vocals they did 3 albums the 1st one called passion is awesome there is a song called if forever I wish you guys would check out so good!!!!
Some more blues, lol lets see, Not sure I've seen you do ZZ Top, fun blues rock, Fool For Your Stockings and Blue Jean Blues are close to this style, more rock Just Got Paid, Cheap Sunglasses, Waiting For The Bus/Jesus Just left Chicago-must be done together. Gov't Mule is a good jazzy blues Kind of Bird, Birth of Mule are real Jazzy, fun rocker Thorazine Shuffle, Don't step on the Grass Sam, Mule. I could go soooo deep in blues but these are more main stream artist tho.
Thanks guys for another Trower reaction, loved it! Saw Mr. Trower and his band in a bar in Memphis in the early 90’s. Amazing performance! I feel he never got the recognition he deserved. My favorite English blues guitarist. You guys should check out some Stevie Ray Vaughn if you haven’t already. Thanks again, more Spock’s Beard! Keep up the great work, love the channel!
Good choice, Michelle Michelle. NicknLex, this song has a blues basis, but it feels more like Soul in Trower's presentation. He makes sure one feels emotion. And by the way there was a Rolling Stone cover years ago, probably 1973, that had the headline ROBIN TROWER, JIMI WHO? Stevie Ray Vaughn would pick up the same mode later on.
Robin does not sing at this point. James Dewar sings on the early Trower records. He did start doing his own vocals in the early 2000's as I remember. You should listen to some of that. As far as blues goes rock is rooted in the blues, so you have kind of been listen to it for a while. I also love jazz, you should do Larry Carlton.
Larry Carlton is one of the most versatile and consummate guitarist in the past 50+ years. Some of the greatest guitar work by Steely Dan was done by Carlton. He can play anything.
Hey Nick N Lex, glad you both like this song and glad you got back to Robin he is a very awesome guitarist and has a lot more good songs. If you two like jazz do you know Stanley Jordan? Keep up the good work. Steve
Robin Trower doesn't sing, he only plays the guitar. The singer was with him for almost his entire career. I don't know his name, but he has a very good voice. If you watch Robin Trower videos, the only time he uses the microphone, is to welcome, and then to thank and say good night to his audience.
So many I'd love to have you guys react to...'Bridge of Sighs', 'Day of the Eagle', 'For Earth Below', 'Caravan to Midnight', 'In City Dreams', I guarantee you will love all of them...one of the most underrated performers ever. Another artist that fell through the cracks is Emily Gillespie...also known as Emily's Imagination' ....I promise you guys will fall in love with her...I'll suggest 4 songs...'Falling Slowly', 'Drive', 'this Day is mine' and 'Focus'...PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE listen to her. She is an amazing talent!

I feel you.......Exactly how a feel.........
He was awesome. Best singer Robin ever worked with. He fit Trower's tone and style so well.
Trower and Dewar were magic together.
Trower's fist six albums are absolute classics and still on heavy rotation for me all these decades later.
Everybody I ever knew that had one eventually sprung a leak and had to bail like mad! More trouble than what they were worth!
James Dewar, my favorite vocalist of all time. From rockers to ballads to love songs....he could sing them all with equal talent. Such a voice!
I've always wished for his singing voice
The late great James Dewar on lead vocals and bass. So under rated!! Trower was such a tasteful player. He just knew what to play and where. Love Trowers use of the univibe and wah pedals!! Good choice you two!👏👍
Trower and Dewar were magic together.
The version of this song from his 1976 Robin Trower Live album is epic! FYI - The bassist is the vocalist for the band.
James Dewar(rip)
Mistah is spot on!!! - that live version is classic!!! Loved Robin back in the day!! Saw this band many times!!
Back when this was released I would put this on to set the mood for any dates I brought back to my apartment, saved me a lot of work!😄😄😄

DAY OF THE EAGLE BY HIM IS A STONE COLD CLASSIC!
The Penultimate Trower for sure!
Yup.
That's the one I was going to suggest! Funky, then sublime, all in one classic song
Day of the Eagle & his Bridge of Sighs are both killer songs which I’d love to hear Nick & Ale a listen to.
This is fantastic. Robin Trower is class and Jimmy Dewar's vocals and bass are sadly missed. Robins live albums are great. You've done good here!
The magic of the Fender Strat and Marshall Amp with Robin Trower at the helm....
Same Rain Falls and Long Misty Days are awesome too ! The late great James Dewer singing…
Trower's tribute to the great Jimi Hendrix. The combination of Trower's bluesy riffs and James Dewar's silky smooth vocals is pure magic!
The thing I love about Robin is that so many of his notes and bends sound like a human voice. One of my fave Strat tones ever!

Nobody has dialed in a Strat’s tone better than Robin.
It’s that perfect blend of bell like clarity with a warm, heavy fuzzyness.
Every Strat sounds differently from others.
In this case, it's the pickups through a processor and a Marshall amp that enrichen the string harmonics.
You are getting me back to all the groups I heard in the 70's ... love watching your enjoyment, subscribed!

Yes, very Hendrix-influenced. Nice mellow track for a late evening.
song makes you feel like you're floating on a cloud.
amo las bandas de los 70 ,musicaaaaa
Ballerina is a beautiful song by Trower.
I have been a huge fan for 40 yrs . Still sounds good.
Never heard this one before, but I've only heard a few things by Trower. Good stuff though.
Thanks for doing Daydream!
you guys should react to Day of the Eagle by them from the winterland concert! it's on youtube!
All Hail the Fender Stratocaster and Marshall Stack!!!!!
All comments are great ive been a tower fan since I was 16 now im 60 and still love him all his early work with james deer on bass and vocals is great! Love it.
the full jam is on live robin trower that blows me away so much SUSTAIN,SOUL,ATTACK
Legend has it I was conceived to this song
Love Blue Jean Blues.
Thanks for your comment, Robert 🤪. Was it a Rolling Stone cover that folded, maybe? Can’t recall when the format changed. 🤪
@@michelemichele3375 , I don't recall precisely, but I don't think it folded. It was around the time got a big name in music.
Steve
Vocals by James Dewar, bass player
I Can't wait Too much Longer. Is a very cool tune.
I'm daydreaming about you "Taking a Pebble", hopeless as it now seems.
Maybe NickNLex will take that pebble and pop it in the CD player or Turntable :).
Ahhh! Cosmic Blues from Trower! Robin is a disciple of Hendrix.
Trowers "Little Wing'
Please listen to "Death dont have no mercy"
From "Live Dead"
Thanks for introducing me to this. Its going into my music bag for sure.
