- This is the new Land Rover Defender 130, the longer extended version of the Land Rover Defender. The Defender 130 rounds off the Defender family and promises to be the largest and most practical offering, Land Rover have added 340mm behind the B pillar to create more space inside. This means that the 130 is offered as standard with 8 seats, you can opt to have the third row of seats removed and have the 130 as just a 5 seater, hence giving even more boot space. The Defender 130 sits on pretty much the same platform as the 110 so promises the same driving dynamics.

They are wonderful looking machines! Just make sure you sell it before it hits 40k miles. (MTBF on their transmissions is about elk miles) 😊
It is a pity that Land Rover does not offer the option of mounting two comfortable and spacious "Captain" type central seats. With 7 seats, and 8 as an option, I think it would be more successful. We will keep the hope that Land Rover will soon offer this possibility.

One of the pluses to this model is the seating folds down to create a flat surface for more cargo or even sleeping room if needed.

I just bought the 130 here in the USA for next year delivery. I got the five seat version so I can have the fold flatter seats and not the "bump" with the third row option. I wish they would have had the front seat drop down center third row seat option on the 130...I miss the "bench seat" in the front row that I had in my 1970 Datsun pick up
With the 5 seat option, does the second row fold completely flat with the rear cargo area (like on LR3 and LR4)? Thanks.
what did it set you back? and did you get gas or diesel? living in CA, we're nervous to buy anything right now - not only is the economy on thin ice, but the dumb governor has no concept of reality
I guess you can retrofit a front jump seat? it's available on the 90 and 110
I just picked one up at the dealership (130) and it’s sick. I don’t plan on fitting a horse in the back so the small bump is really a non issue, and all the cool, unique things about this car more than makeup for it
they should build a Van on the same platform, like a big combi that can go anywhere.
It’s good review (as usual) although it’s a shame you weren’t able to grab a few friends to demonstrate how well three people sat in the 3rd row as it looked as if you occupied one and a half seats back there

I think mostly 2 or 3 children will be sitting there, granny and grandpa will be in the second row, it would anyway be uncomfotable for adults to climb through to the back. It's a wide car, wider than most and the second row and 3rd row would more or less be the same. It is always cramped if you try and fit 3 adults in most cars second row even, unless they are skinny women, they will be cramped in. These are proper seats though so your older teenagers will fit in comfortably and not just todlers as in some other 3rd row cars
I think the 3rd row its good for 3 kids or 2 adults. But beasty look LR 🥰
In very Rural areas in India , the 3rd row is 5 seaters easily.
Now it has the same space as the old Series 110. Space in the back for jump seats.
I love the looks and the extra convenience, but I still have not heard any reviewer comment on the elephant in the room, which is the bump in the trunk floor when the 3rd row is folded down.... I understand the stadium seating and all that, but to me that bump hugely limits the usability when you do not need to use the third row.

I just test drove a 130 8-seater today. That bump is such a disappointment. That’s really cheap execution. It looks absolutely ridiculous and lacks any elegance. Deal breaker for me.
Just picked mine up and I absolutely do not care about a tiny bump as I do not plan on trying to fit a horse inside. Amazing car, best under 120k
It's probably because it has its spare wheel on the rear door. This leaves you with lots of spare room in the trunk, being able to lower the floor. But they should've made a larger compartment, so everything is flush anyway.
A 130 van or crew cab pick-up model would be great i think

Land Rovers are one of the most reliable vehicles in the world. There are Land Rovers that have been running since the 50's. It's about whether the driver can drive or not. I hate Range Rover, just because they're for rich people, not for farm workers.
Pffffft… who expects a transmission to last longer than 45k miles anymore? Cars are disposable, drive it hard and sell that Land Rover before it hits 35k miles. Problem solved! Hello? 😊
Awesome awesome....the goal I can't reach is this "defender 130"...however on defender....love love love love love love love very much....
Wanted to go for the 130 as I have besides my family (in total 4 pax) 2 mid-sized dogs. Price of the 130 based on my configuration 125.000 € exactly matching BMW X7 40i or Mercedes GLS 450 pricing but both are so much more luxurious that you get the feeling that 130 is massively overpriced. But most decisive point to not buy the 130 is the missing flexibility of the interior seating in comparison to the Defender 110 or BMW X7 or Mercedes GLS. In the Defender 130 none of the back seats can‘t be entirely folded flat which is so disappointing. You are opting for more cargo space for you dogs as well luggage by folding down the 3rd row but it is not flat. Same for the second row. So I called Land Rover as I couldn’t believe it and I was told that the 130 is not aiming for real adventurers but more for soft ones with an extra luxurious touch. If these the marketing road map than I do not understand the minor luxurious equipment as well as quality in comparison to all its competitors like BMW, Mercedes, Continental, Cadillac, Wagoneer, Infinity, Nissan…..

@@paulwatson4650 Because there are still lots of them from the 50s/60s on the road, and they were pretty much bomb proof. Any of the old Land Rovers are better. If something goes wrong, you can fix it yourself. With a new car, if the same happens, you've got to take it to a mechanic with an IT degree, so they can mess around with your computer on wheels.

The Mitsubishi Delica D5 (2006-) is available with 8 seats. It's brilliant but has never been available from new in the UK. I have a recent import and have travelled comfortably in the rear row of seats as a 110kg 5'11" adult.

This, no doubt is a wonderful car, but it shouldn't be called a defender. Good luck getting a pallet in the back of that or a tone of sand or ballast. I have a puma 130, and it's the hi cap pickup which for me makes it so good for me. This is more of a Freelander Max. JLR should have mothballed the defender badge for this range and called them Freelanders.
I really liked this 130 defender. Unfortunately is so expensive to buy. As a tourist private driver I organise privet adventure trip around desert and this 8 site will be good choose for us.
I just picked one up for $78,000. Honestly not bad at all
@@BestOfTate23 unfortunately it still expensive hahah. We use Toyota Prado TX that start from 48,000$, and the one we have is about $53,000 .

Matt, You are so right, 'we' ''love'' a Defender. And yes this one is 'mass-ss-ive'! I swear you could live in the back of the 130 and have room for a dog! In fact several. Will be interesting to note how many buyers go for 8 seats or six. More 'load capacity' if being used as a workhorse. As always Rybrook have spec'd this one superbly. I thought the 110 was ugly, oversized and overpriced but Land Rover have really excelled themselves with the 130. That they couldn't produce a fold flat interior or at least have the rear row fold flat at this price level seems like a ludicrous oversight. I assume the 5 seat option gives a flat floor in the boot but that would make opting for the larger model rather pointless. I also noted from the video that the third row passengers cannot even see out of the vehicle.
Just as long as you’ve got a land cruiser following you, that way when you break down you’ll get home.
Why not buy a new discovery top spec for half of the price?! It’s literally the same chassis and most will be driving the 3.0 diesel ones so the disco is the most sensible option especially if you consider that the internal space is practically the same.
and the Disco actually has a nicer interior, for less $. :)

How much did it cost
The 130 looks just too long in the back and the 90 is way too short. If you need a 7 seater take the GLS Mercedes. But the Defender 110 looks just perfect!

very nice one of the few larger wagons that have a no 3rd row opt , wish more auto makers would offer a 2 row opt as lot of of us have no need want or ever have a use for a 3rd row , who want a large cargo bay
3:48 No flat floor. Deal breaker. Why can't Land Rover engineer flat folding seats. My 16 year old Discovery 3 has them. This is useless for carrying anything other than people. Beautiful exterior though!
Because the next one will have flat seats. Meaning you need to buy new car.

I own a Land Rover 130 -the Puma 2013 model. It is called a 130 because it has a 127 inch wheelbase. What is the wheelbase of the new Defender? It looks like it has a big overhang at the back. How does that effect payload?

I have a 2009 Landroverdefender110 and it’s Brilliant, and can seat 12 people 3 in the front 2 behind in the Middle seats and in the back 2 bench seat for 3 people each side, So tell me again how you cant think of another 4x4 or Car that takes more than 8 people? … DUH 🙄

The Discovery 4 did it better, in my opinion.
Except the seats don't fold flat, which they did on Discovery 3/4. All the looks, none of the utility.
Nowhere near the Disco in terms of turning circle. Anyone caught in one of these in a city will very soon realize what an ungainly lump of metal this vehicle actually is.
My disco 3 will someday come to an end. But I'm not sure what I would do. Disco 4 will just be as expensive to run. Don't like the disco 5. The defender 90 and 110 looks good but I want more space and seats. I saw the hump and said what is that. How could they get it so wrong. I prefer 7 seats and no bump. Also I think uk licence only allows for 7 seats. Any more its then classed as a mini bus. I am going back 10 years though.

Ok, the load space is longer. But for use as a super comfortable five-seater with huge loadspace, why would I spend £120k on this instead of £130k on the 7 seat Range Rover? The interior luxury and quality is incomparably better, the load space is still vast, the off-road ability is still incredible. I think you have to REALLY want to portray a certain rugged image to essentially opt for a vastly less wonderful experience in daily use.

@@humanfirst11because Land rovers are iconic for breaking down. Land cruisers are all terrain and know pan to go for ever. Hope that clears it up.
@@leonhenry4861 Talking as a lifelong African, Old Land-Cruisers was bullet proof. Now they are also getting over complicated. But game lodges stick with old fashioned real Defenders, because it just looks right.

The biggest problems I have with this new Defender are the poor max payload and no option for a manual gearbox and air suspension. I have a 1999 130 TD5 which has a much higher maximum payload, 1300 kg compared to 850 kg for the new one and this new Defender feels like a huge step backwards for commercial customers compared to the old one. I think that by not offering a commercial version with a manual gearbox, proper suspension and a decent payload, Land Rover have lost a big chunk of their prospective customers. I certainly won't be buying one, I will most likely end up buying something like a Ford Ranger or an Isuzu D-Max.

That gear shifter is a complete dealbreaker for me. As a previous range rover owner, I just couldn’t do it without your shifter. They should’ve just put a rotary aluminum knob to select gears.

That's not a defender! . . . . Its been reworked and now has more in common with a Chelsea tractor . . . .WHY? because its more marketable apparently they can sell more , how at those prices is astonishing. Well at least they can sell these in the US the TDCi apparently doesn't meet safety standards over there I've heard, but really its because of direct competition with jeep (my opinion) and yes spoken like a true TDCi Defender owner (old is gold and always will be) ;)
