- In this week's guitar tutorial we are checking out the FASTEST way to memorize the guitar fretboard with the ULTIMATE fretboard memorization practice exercise. This is, hands down, the best exercise to learn the guitar neck and, with just 5 minutes a day, you'll have your fretboard down cold!

Time codes for Workouts:
40 BPM: 2:23
60 BPM: 5:51
80 BPM: 8:12
100 BPM: 9:58
120 BPM: 11:22
This first guitar practice workout (one of the best exercises to learn the guitar fretboard) has us finding each of the 12 chromatic notes on every string. If we limit ourselves to the first 12 frets, each note can be found once on each string (except the open-string notes).
The Rules are as follows:
1. Notes are limited to the first octave of each guitar string (up to 12th fret)
2. You will play all 12 chromatic notes around the cycle of fourths, starting from A.
3. String order 6-5-4-3-2-1-2-3-4-5-6 (then change note)
4. No open strings (all open string notes will be played at the 12th fret octave)
5. Try to play each note with the index finger (finger 1)
6. There are five target tempos to aim for ranging between 40 BPM to 120 BPM

Even after playing 35 years, I find what limits me most in being to translate what’s in my head to the instrument is a mastery of the fundamentals of the instrument. This is very useful for any guitarist. It may seem tedious and unexciting at first but anything that opens up the fretboard and doesn’t just segmentalize it will have huge payoffs in the long run. Until 12 years ago, I used to be able to play the major scale only in one position. That’s not being a musician that’s being a guy who plays guitar. I want to be a musician. Now I practice scales in every position both horizontally and vertically and every once in a while comes a break where my brain says, now I get it.
Thanks so much for your insight. That’s exactly what motivates me - transforming casual players into musicians that truly understand the instrument 🙏🏻
It's generally argued on the YT that the only way of memorising the fretboard is to base your mind on references; no way really, they say, to spot one note without having the neighbouring notes before along 4th or whatever. Ry N proves this to be wrong. You stick to his lesson for a week and then you have the whole stuff in your backbone. Why do the piano lads & lasses get to know their seven, or whatever, octaves by heart - in their sleep at that - by the first month while we guitarists stumble for a lifetime. Well done Ry. I suspect by now that Ry has more goddies for us.
Or the violinists for that matter - even without darn frets.
I'm confused as to how the note order was chosen (A, D, G, C, etc.). Why this order? Love your stuff!
it's the circle of fourths.
D is the fourth of A
G is the fourth of D
C is the fourth of G;
etc
plenty of lessons out there on the circle of fourths
Exactly. It’s the cycle of fourths (counter-clockwise around the cycle of fifths). For this particular exercise it’s useful because it ensures the pattern of notes across the strings is completely different each time.
Brilliant! The very thing I need to level up. Thank you.
thanks for providing these materials. they are well structured and easy to understand. thank you
Great exercise! The backing track is cool and a great idea. Thank you
Thanks for checking it out 🙏🏻
Ok you keep answering all my prayers with your youtube videos.
First I needed a tutorial for cyclone - done.
Then I was just about to get into some 3h music theory video although the only thing I really wanted to know for now is where to find all the notes on the fretboard. - bull's eye !
Cheers mate (imagine last part of cyclone village sessions)
Thanks for sharing. Great to hear the videos help 🙏🏻
Very good teaching.
Nice clear simple effective practice aid. Thanks
Hello I tried to get your free e-book but I never received the email. Can you help?
Hey Heather. It looks like you were sent an email. If you still didn't get it, you can email me at contact@rynaylorguitar.com and I'll sort it out for you. Thanks 🙏🏻
Thank you very much for this exercise Ry. Any chance you could please explain when a # is a sharp or a flat and vise verse. Again, thanks heaps for this exercise...
You’re welcome Simon. The naming of sharp and flat notes depend on the scale/key you’re playing in. For example in an E major scale you have the note D#. That same note would be named Eb in an Eb major scale. Hope that helps 🙏🏻
Thank you for explaining that Ry😊
Many thanks..your lessions are all amazing..🎉❤
Thank you! 😃
Hi, Ry. I'm new to guitar, I mean, completely new to any kind of music playing and this, so far is my favourite exercise. I'm curious as to what the music is you're exercising to.
It really seems to help it along.
Cheers.
Hey Macs. This is just a backing track I made. It’s available to download on my Patreon page 🙏🏻
@@Rynaylorguitar Thanks a lot. x
But there are no Guitar Pro tabs for this bro....... only a pdf
Hey. Do you mean on Patreon?
hey ray! really appreciate your videos. especially your guitar tutorial on wildfire is great. I was wondering if you could so a tutorial on "learn it all again tomorrow" by Ben Harper. Heard that song in "The longest Ride" and it won´t go out of my mind.
Thanks. I’ll check it out 🙏🏻
