As Donald Trump selected Ohio Senator J.D. Vance to be his vice-presidential candidate Monday, we look at the record of the 39-year-old political rookie, who rose to fame after writing the memoir Hillbilly Elegy and who once compared Trump to Hitler and called him unfit for the presidency. He was elected to the Senate in 2022 with backing from right-wing billionaire Peter Thiel, and he has since embraced the MAGA movement and become one of Trump’s most loyal supporters. For more on Vance’s rise and his appeal to the Republican base, we go to Pikeville, Kentucky, to speak with famed sociologist Arlie Russell Hochschild, who has been speaking with Trump supporters for her forthcoming book, Stolen Pride: Loss, Shame, and the Rise of the Right, which is a follow-up to her 2016 book, Strangers in Their Own Land: Anger and Mourning on the American Right, described as “a Rosetta stone” for understanding the rise of Donald Trump.

@@zvmZvm0102 You are correct, the elite or some call the rich, don't give a crap about the economy or damage to our country's resources, they only believe in Generational Wealth. The problem is not the President, it's the politicians we elect to govern what we call Democracy. We our fooled to hate each other through racism and divisional wealth, while they pass laws to keep the poor people down and lift the wealthy up. If we don't wake up and smell the coffee, there will be no Democracy to fight over. Remember the civil war, well when Trump takes office, he and Vance will make January 6th, look like child's play and our whole country won't be safe for any race, unless we come together like we did when George Floyd died or any crisis we have encountered. Also, how in the hell we going to have a mass deportation of immigrants when you can't even keep the borders safe as of now. Poor people of all races need to stand up against the generations of rich Politicians and Corporations that created this mess we live in today. Anyone reading this post also read and pass along to others, the 2025 manifest in its entirety and ask yourself do you want to live by these new laws and regulations. Sure, Biden is old and so is Trump, yet as least Biden is not going to cause a race war in the US. Keep in mind the Caucasian race ( is or will be the minority race and as i see it the Hispanic race will outnumber all others. Pay attention to the People in America, not the Powerful in America, they are the cause of our major problems!

Your understanding is on the right track.
O'Brien's efforts are aside from Republicans. Under biden, every single bill/policy that's been pro-union has had zero Republican support. They shut it down every time.
O'Brien is attempting to hold them to at least something that could benefit the working class, and its him getting to use the platform for reach. One theory is they want the Amazon deal, and possibly the trump admin had him speak in a handshake deal to allow it happen. Thats just speculation though. The RNC is looking to leverage the speech for sure (appearances, sway voters and draw ire), but as you point out the elites and republicans most likely will not allow going any further than that.

It's easy to demonize the people who support Trump and I appreciate the nuance that Mrs. Hochschild is speaking of in this interview. What are people who feel betrayed left and right to do after being ping-ponged back and forth without any true representation. And the tendency to look down on these people just makes things worse.

I watched this with an open mind, but as a once democrat from California, I too did not like Trump in 2016. It was when I had to travel around the United States when I started listening to Americans. When I listened to their needs, when I had the opportunity to break bread with the heart of American families, is when I found what the true spirit that backs Trump is. The thing is, most people do not address the heart of America and the heart and soul of the American's that live within this country. We as a country have purposely disconnected from each other. We have disconnected from what our purpose is as human beings and as a community. Life is short... it is the precious commodity we have, Time.... and yet, there are so many people willing to become outraged by a man who truly has the heart of America within him. He sees the people, he lives for the working class. Doesn't matter that he has money... He worked hard for that privledged ... It's not Trump that is the problem. It is the people who have chosen to be angry, divisive, angry... why? because they are told too be. This country needs to find unity within each other. We all have a measured time to live. It being angry how one want's to live? Is being self righteous the cause you want to be remembered for? We are hurting each other, hurting our families, our neighbors, and the most beautiful country ... We are blessed beyond words... and being grateful is something most people have lost touched with... its more than saying it, its feeling it... You cant be angry and grateful at the same time. Let's find that narrow path where you find genuine love, kindness, truth, and preservation for all... not just self. We The People....

When Traveling-Salesman Harold Hill of "The Music Man" came to town, people liked him as well. He only cheated them out of money for Band Instruments for their children. That was fiction, this is not and the Stakes are much, much higher now. We're talking about the Executive Branch of the US Government.
The 3 Judges that Trump placed on the Supreme Court have ruled that anonymous campaign donations with no cap are "legal now". Those same (conservative) Judges ALSO ruled that when a President does ANYTHING in Office, what once was illegal isn't anymore. There's more; the EPA was signed into Law by President Nixon and has, for the last 5 decades, cleaned up our Air and our Rivers, for starters. The recent Chevron case has gutted the regulation power of government agencies - that's bad timing considering that Boeing is extracting profits for their executives instead of engaging in their Aircraft manufacturing. Maybe the Party of deregulation and Tax Cuts for businesses should have thought that over but neither they nor the Judges that ruled in favor of gutting Regulations in the Chevron case seems to care.
That all sounds pretty dangerous and it also sounds odd that the Judges Trump appointed would grant legal immunity to a sitting President when Trump clearly said, several times, that "he would be a dictator on day one". ONLY day one? Because, in 2016 Trump promised an endless number of times that he was going to be "too busy for Golf, working for you" and yet Trump Golfed more often in 4 years than Obama did in 8.
Red States have to still rely only on traditional TV, radio and newspapers, those have now been purchased by a very few, very wealthy billionaires. Not many residents living away from the airport/business regions in the nation's Midwest have Broadband. Many don't have any Internet at all. That means that they don't get to hear news from media that is not owned by billionaires and influenced by corporations. They never get into listen to Democracy Now! or the others.
Faced with that lack of diversity in the news they consume, those people must instead; ask themselves if this country is moving in the right direction for these past 4 years. I believe we are now. Biden has done good work and placed good people in important positions (one exception is Pete Buttigieg. I don't care that he's gay but I don't like him).
Trump was interviewed 39 times by Howard Stern on Howard's show. His show is not for me but I DO know that Howard Stern is very intelligent. I know also that Stern and Trump had many of the same fans, Stern knew that when he warned them on his radio show; "The people who Trump despises the most, Love him the most.".
Now, Howard Hill of "The Music Man" didn't hate the townspeople that purchased his band instruments but he did cheat them and again; the Presidency of the United States is not fiction and it is very, very important. Do not get this one wrong.

Just remember Kamala called Joe a racist. Then became the VP.
And most forgot about Kamala’s run in with slick Willy brown back in the late 80’s .. and that is facts. I can only say one thing to unite the country .. there are both sides to every coin, somewhere in that middle is the truth

If Not HOMELESSNESS is Only going to get worse ESPECIALLY in all major cities ❤

@@bwofficial1776 Those "new locals" are speculators and landlords. They'll flip and raise prices on their own properties just to make housing into a rental market. Guess who will eventually be forced into that rental market, or leave? The older locals.
EDIT: It's also quite selfish to assume that older locals should pack up and go on the whim of wealthier new arrivals. What if those older locals are retired, infirm, and/or disabled? Should they be forced to hammer away at and flip ruined houses? Why must people "play the game" just to afford a place to live?

**He was right about NATO, China, NorK, Russia, Ukr, Afg,
**He slowed illegal immigration to a crawl
**The economy practically exploded, it grew so well
**Enacted tax reform that was especially beneficial to the middle class, the wealthy actually not so much
**No wars, but in fact avoided war (e.g., when his "mil advisors" urged him to retaliate against Iran, but said no)
**Built a strong defense and military
      **ENERGY INDEPENDENCE
      **Jobs back from China
      **First safe modular nuclear reactors
      **450 miles of border wall
**Low unemployment -- historic economic growth across ethnic lines -- $6K per family
      **prison reform
**Abraham Accords Middle East peace agreements
**Reduced CO2 by 2.9% AND withdrew from toxic Paris Climate scam
      **Vetoed Iran $ billions
** Inflation 1.4% when left office (NOT 9% as Biden lied, Biden MADE it more than 9%)
**Poked the DeepState status-quo establishment bear, and drew their monumental opposition
**Not perfect, but he did what he could to keep his promises in the midst of withering hostility
**Was not "Hitler" or "a dictator," unlike the present authoritarian regime
**Was not what the Marxocrats or the Marxocrat Media accused him of, and tried to destroy him
I would say Biden's policies, such as killing energy independence and creating record inflation REMOVED FUNDS from my bank account. I have had to suspend my retirement, thanks to Effing felon, Joe Biden, and am I angry? THINK ABOUT IT.

News Flash: Manufacturing companies in the U.S. do not move overseas because their situation in America is too hard.
Companies move overseas because doing so increases their profits, their bottom line.
The decision to move is made by a tiny group of plutocrats in the corporate board of directors.
The board is totally unaccountable to ANYONE, they can do as they please, and nobody can stop them.
The failed union strategy of "partnership with management" is just that: A FAILED STRATEGY.
That is why union membership in America among privately owned corporations is around 5% of the labor force. Almost non-existent.
You would have thought that (with union density approaching zero) union leaders like O'Brien would have ditched failed strategies like "partnership with management".
    And you would be wrong.

I'm a big supporter of Democracy Now for their stellar reporting on the genocide in Gaza-at the hands of the Zionist movement. I come from the people of Appalachia on my maternal side. From a long line of coal miners more specifically. My family has been staunch Democrats for generations. I was not raised in that community however, so my views come from an outsider's perspective although I have a deep heart for those communities.
Here's my main point: I am no longer a registered Democrat-where I worked tirelessly for both of Barack Obama's campaigns. I switched to Independent so I could vote for Robert Kennedy Jr. I have pulled out of Bobby's campaign due to his lack of support for the people of Gaza. I currently have no candidate. I am extremely hesitant to vote Republican. I don't feel I could do that so I am not voting in November. How I justify this decision is believing my vote as an individual *does not count*. At least not in my state.
My question for Ms. Hochschild is rhetorical but it's this: who brought and are bringing the drugs into the poor Appalachian communities (and to the Native American communities at alarming rates) along with the Sackler family and their opiates? Where are these drugs originating from?
I think anyone with any common sense knows the answer to that question.
*THIS* is why individuals like JD Vance are having massive appeal to peoples of economically and mentally distressed communities; he appeals to the ones who are really living it and not just writing about it. It's really not rocket science.

    Dear Democracy Now!
as an avid supporter, i am angered and dissatisfied that you can do no better than exploit a bullshit depiction of the entirety of the Appalachian region as extrapolated from one small area of Kentucky (and not even extrapolated any remotely interesting fashion.)
“shockingly “ everyone who comes to this region and reports about it tends to peddle the same “get out” myth wherein in order to be smart or progressive one must get out of the backwards region of drugs and pride and violence, etc etc etc (ad nauseam…)
this story creates perceptions about the Appalachian people and then other retell the same tale, for the pleasure of the rest of the nation, who loves the reinforcement of the “Appalachian poverty drama”.
Appalachia is an inherently variegated region that by nature of its unique boundaries within states, but not encompassing states except for West Virginia… makes it a different region to easily navigate, politically speaking…
However, every single reporter who wants to talk about Appalachia with regards to Trump does so in a pat, un interesting and quite frankly bullshit manner that would not suffer the rigors of reporting with regards to any other polling in any other region. Progressives and moderates live here too, we loved our unions…lots.
We have universities, and plenty of people who are not addicts, not violent, people who speak more than one language, who are of all sexual orientations…and plenty of immigrants we love and cherish in our communities as Also, you might want to talk about how Appalachia has been the site of more than just coal- its first ever natural resource being the old growth forests in the Mountains in the Smokies and the Blue Ridge. it is remarkable to me how people love to report on this and no one even thinks to get a fresh take because the fresh take of Appalachia for the rest of the nation would of course be a take that denies the homogenous view of Appalachia as evidenced by one JD Vance…I
how about you bring on some of the APPALACHIAN scholars and excellent writers who have been part of the movement in response to Jd Vances’s Cavalier notion of the using the first person plural we to speak for an entire population of people as if “we”were all his own personal puppets on his way to opportunistic power grabs.
If you want to check out some excellent writing about that represents a complicated perspective that actually reflects a complicated region that refuses to be lumped into one single thing… Check out the anthology APPALACHIAN reckoning, as well as the other anthology “walk till the dogs get get mean: contemporary writing from Appalachia. “

They had too make up/exaggerate the movie because the book was,so boring. I didn't know who he was when I saw the movie. This is probably the only time the book isn't better then the movie. Once I read, the book,I realized they had to embellish the movie in such a way because the book is just whining. His situation wasn't even that bad. The movie made his life seem unbelievably tragic, until you read the book and realize it's pure Hollywood. Sorry I wasted money on that book. It was a struggle to slog through.

@@Ann-eb8fo Umm, it's about his life! Was he supposed to add lies and drama just for your liking? Sorry, but it was a best seller with rave reviews, so much so that it got Ron Howard's attention to direct the movie and attracted some big name actors to play in it.
