  • The island of Koh Larn is just 45 minutes away from Pattaya by ferry. The ferry is cheap but may not be ideal for everyone.

    Many thanks Steady Eddie.
Braver man than me, humping 20kg suitcase in rough water, up dodgy steps.
With my dodgy legs, and back no way !!
Koh Larn looks a great break from Pattaya.
Like you, I have done too many bar crawls, enjoying myself downtown, to visit.
On my to do list now.

The ferries used leave from an old rickety wooded pier on beach road , a little bit before Walking street . Who remembers that ? I think the ferries alternate between arriving at the beach and the "town" . Not sure though.

the ferry over to Koh Larn is a real bargain at 30 Baht done the trip a number of times. Hire an electric golf cart to travel round the island.

@@andrewrobinson2565 they are good, the charge gives about 3 to 4 hours run time and a top speed of 15 mph ideal for an island the size of Koh Larn more than enough power to visit all the beaches and sights, they do two sizes a 2 and a 4 seat very easy to drive and you cannot fall off

I'm X US Navy and I love the rough water but the way they are discharging clueless and out of shape tourists, it's just a matter of time before one slips and gets crushed. That docking was real 3rd world stuff. Now that I know it's so cheap, I'll definitely go for a quick visit. Thanks for the tour Eddie.

So glad I found this! Have been considering spending a couple of nights on the island as part of my upcoming trip in October, but now I've seen the boat situation, I'm not sure I'll bother! I'm only 56, but suffer from arthritis and am not always so steady on my feet, especially when my ankles and knees are playing up. Getting off that boat onto those steps in that swell (and also carrying a heavy suitcase) is a recipe for disaster and not one I'm sure I want to deal with. Thanks for the honest video mate, all the others I've seen have been by "bright young things", who probably never even gave the logistics a second thought as they leapt effortlessly to shore! 😆

    • @STEADY599
      @STEADY599  Рік тому +2

There are other, faster boats that go to the island and they may have easier landings. That's just the one that I took.

The Mamasan of the New Orn Bar in Soi Diana, and her daughter took me to Koh Larn on the ferry, many years ago.
On the way home she slipped as soon as she boarded the ferry, the floor was soaking. It was a very heavy fall, amazingly she wasn't too badly hurt, just a bruise.
Over the years I suspect there have been thousands of minor accidents. Unfortunately safety is second to profit.

I did a day trip to Koh Larn in 2004 on the ferry but our arrival coincided with low tide so the ferry couldn't get to the pier. We were met out in rough seas by a number of long boats and then we had to climb over the railing and down onto the long boat whilst both boats were bobbing up and down slamming into each other. Then the long boats dropped us off in water that was almost groin high on me and I'm 6ft 1. Luckily I'd wore shorts and flip flops but others were not so lucky. Apparently this was normal practice. It would have been nice to know beforehand so you could dress appropriately or opt out if you were aged, unsteady on your feet or disabled.

I went to Koh Larn for the day back in March 1986 on a long boat just from the beach at Pattaya and jumping into the water at Koh Larn. Just 1 hut on the beach then. I didn't have a suitcase and I was only 23. It was almost uninhabited back then. Anyhow, the beach still looks amazing. I was warned about the dodgy embarking and disembarking, and I was told it was onto floating piers. I think seeing it was quite enlightening. There would be some who could just not do that transfer safely! Makes crossing 2nd road look easy.... I look forward to seeing the rest of the visit.... The hotel looks good.

It’s a long saga. The owners didn’t have permission to build it so high with so many floors & a lot of law suits were brought about it blocking the view. Also a dispute about a distance being measured from the sea or pier & if it encroaches on public land or not. An order was made to stop construction then a few years later the owners were ordered to demolish it & a load more law suits were brought from those bought Condos off plot. The owners ignored the demolition order for years & the authorities said they would demolish it and bill the owners then the owners put in an application for rebuild certificate & would take down some of the floors to reduce the height & legal arguments & law suits go on as does the saga.

@@isaanman5399 Thanks for the info. It's a nightmare to look at. I see it from my balcony in Pratumnack. They love parties and events here... bet half the town would show up for a scheduled demolition !!
