It's a 15 inch device, with a 1440p display that refreshes at 165 hertz, with an aluminium chassis, a 13th gen Intel i7 CPU, an RTX 4060 GPU, as much RAM as you could cram into a laptop, and very solid I/O.
So, this thing is chunky: it's not meant to be an ultrabook, it weighs 2.1 kilos, or 4.6 pounds, and it's pretty damn sturdy. Not much give or flex to this chassis, thanks to the aluminium.
The hinge is really solid as well, with minimal wobble when typing. It's a 16:9 form factor. Of course you can open the laptop, and access the 2 M.2 slots for SSDs, the 2 DDR5 RAM slots, and the battery, which is 62 Wh. You can also buy spare parts from Slimbook, including the bezel cover, touchpad, lid, battery, keyboard palm rest, display, and more.
Now, in terms of specs, this laptop is well equipped, with a core i7 13620H, and an Nvidia RTX 4060, with 8 gigs of VRAM.
You can spec the rest up to your liking, with up to 64 gigs of DDR 5 RAM, at 5200 Mhz, and up to 4TB of PCIE4 storage.
You can also choose to dispose with the gamer branding and use a more unified black keyboard instead of having the white accents on the WASD keys, and you can pick any keyboard language you want.
As per I/O, on the left, you get a kensington lock, a USB 2.0 port, probably for a mouse, a mic jack, and a headphone jack. On the back, you have a mindisplay port, USB C 3.2 gen 2 with dusplayport support, HDMI 2.1, a gigabit ethernet port and the barrel charger, since charging this thing over USB would be a challenge. And on the right, there's an SD card reader, and 2 type A USB 3.2 ports.
On top of all that, you get Bluetooth 5.2, Wifi 6, a basic webcam and onboard mic that won't blow your socks off, dual speakers that are pretty decent, and a backlit keyboard with RGB, because, gamer.
In terms of benchmarks, the CPU get a score of 2733 in single core and 11625 in multi core on Geekbench 6.
    browser.geekbench.com/v6/cpu/...
Battery life is decent, with about 7h of generic office work with wifi on, 50% brightness, and using the silent mode.
In Horizon Zero Dawn, at the native 1440p resolution, without any upscaling, and at the ultra preset, the Slimbook Hero managed a super smooth 60 FPS.
For Shadow of the Tomb Raider, also at 1440p without upscaling, and the ultra preset, I got 99 FPS on average, sometimes going down to about 80, or up to 120.
The display is really solid, it covers 100% of SRGB, it has a refresh rate up to 165hz, and it's 1440p.
The keyboard is solid enough. The keys are very stable, and they have good travel. They're quite clicky, and the sound is pleasant, and they bounce back super fast, it's very nice to type on.
The touchpad is ok. It's smooth enough, and precise, although it's very off center, which I find annoying in day to day use.

I like this design and appreciate that the touchpad is in the middle of a keyboard and not in the middle of a laptop case. There is small disadvantage, touchpad bends a little too much.

To me, there is another cosmetic disadvantage. The Font on the keyboard looks like it's ripped right from most an action-based Scifi production, i.e. badly legible. It might be attractive to the main target demographic, but it assaults my senses. I miss touchpad buttons (a Linux laptop would ideally provide at least three, but that space can be taken by the touchpad itself and normally you would indeed attach a mouse to it. The price is quite competitive though, especially when considering that the machine has both a powerful CPU and GPU.

Small critique on the video, when you were tilting the laptop around while the video was playing, the video content was fading in and out, but it made it look like the turning of the laptop was the cause of the content disappearing. I think the timing made the viewing angles look worse than it actually was.

The closest to perfect Linux gaming laptop this year is probably going to be the Framework Laptop 16. Pretty much any keyboard and touchpad layout you want, USB4, AMD Ryzen HS CPUs, AMD dGPU (so no Nvidia nonsense), great repairability and unrivaled upgradability, and a 16 : 10 2560 x 1600 165 hz 100% DCI-P3 500 nits screen, which no other Linux laptop has at the moment. Which is why it's, imo, still "strange" to use Linux for gaming - you're still locked out of many games that IMO happens to be less popular in the FOSS community.

Can you check if the refresh rate of the monitor can be changed when different screen resolution is set? Also, if you use live system (with different DE and newer packages, like Manjaro KDE), are refresh rates the same?
I have a signal from a user of Slimbook Executive, that he has the highest refresh rate only in the highest resolution, so when he changes it down, he gets only 48Hz possibility. This would mean that the monitor is practically locked with the highest resolution and refresh rate, which uses more energy and limits the user ability to save battery life. This seems to be a huge drawback and the one that may convince me not to buy anything from Slimbook. The price is right, but at what cost?

    • @DavidStruveDesigns
      @DavidStruveDesigns 7 місяців тому +9

Personally I'm of the opinion that 1080p as a common resolution needs to die already and join 480p and 720p in the resolution graveyard. The new minimum should be 1440p as we've had this for long enough with even higher options for quite some time that there's really no reason or excuse for anybody to be still gaming at 1080p. Having to develop games and devices for this resolution is just holding everything back. We've had this resolution for _seventeen_ years already, and despite everything else advancing like hardware, game complexity and detail this resolution is _still_ the base/default or most common and that's just ridiculous!

@DavidStruveDesigns Personally, for 13 &14 inch laptops, 1920x1200 is fine, because it's pixel dense enough without hurting battery life. At 15 or 16 inches, it depends on product category. But once you get up to 17 or 18 inches, then most people (including myself) can notice a 1080p panel and all of the pixels involved, which doesn't happen as much at higher resolutions.

    • @DavidStruveDesigns
      @DavidStruveDesigns 7 місяців тому +4

@@cameronbosch1213 Okay yeah, I'll give you that - 1920x1200 is okay if you need better battery life for now. Though again, perhaps having to deal with a bit of a higher resolution as a base will force companies to figure that out? As I said, having the "easier" lower-resolution option allows them to cop-out a bit too much in development IMO.

The problem with gaming on Linux isn't the games themselves, it's everything AROUND games. There are decades of mod managers, mods, save editors, cheat engines, trainers, etc., etc., that were developed exclusively for Windows, and if you want to get all that setup on Linux, there is not going to be any easy one click way to do it, you'll have to set up the Wine Bottles yourself and try to run it that way. We may get to a point where it's perfectly feasible to run Linux for games going forward, but then if you want to go back and replay an old favorite, I think you'll always have to deal with this.

Gaming on Linux is better than ever, but for my personal use case(using utilities for single player games like WeMod, CheatEngine, and trainers, and having my game library on a different drive than my Steam install causing conflict with Proton) it's not enough to convince me to switch permanently.

I didn't do much CheatEngine usage besides very simple value updates (e.g. increasing a number) so Game Conquerer has been perfectly fine for me.

Probably fixable by using a symlink that point to the place where the file is expected. By example I have a couple of games on a windows NTFS drive then the proton folder and compdata folder are simlinked to a Linux drive. This fix the issue that can happen when proton run from a windows drive. Actually all my compdata folder are also symliked to the NVME ssd to get instantaneous prefix update, then the game files stay on common HDD or Sata SSD. This trick should also work for resolving other kind of files conflict.

I'm pretty happy with what I've bought, but, although this is a little less powerful, it's SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper, and it has Linux-supported hardware (mine took a little tweaking to get working effectively). Only thing is it needs a 17"+ display. It's a gaming laptop after all. You want as big a screen as possible when gaming on the go.

It's something Valve (or one of thier technically-savvy users) found with the Steam Deck. If the hardware can't quite manage a consistent 60fps at a 60Hz refresh rate, it'll end up effectively running at 30fps with vsync on. If, however, it's not quite able to hit 60, but can beat 40, then a 40Hz refresh rate will come out smoother.

As usual, I see some problems or deviations from the ideal
    - 0 on Numpad is not wide, due to arrows taking its space. I work on spreadsheets and my lifelong muscle memory tells me to hit the down, left corner, which has an arrow on this laptop
    - pad is without buttons, I just can't get use to it, I get missclicks or lack of clicks, it's just horrible and only few vendors nowadays still use firm buttons on a pad, which is regrettable,
    - screen is 15,6, not 17 inch, which I'm used to, but I'm reconsidering the smaller form thou, since mobility is important for me, and such laptop is a more working device, less a gaming device, but should do both very well,
    - power plug on the back, in 99% cases AC is on the left or right, so the cord would be curved and tense all the time - not good from durability standpoint
    - lack of 60Hz, which is the biggest issue, battery wise
Still, the price is so great that it can compete with known gaming brands.
I currently am on a 10 years old 17-inch Alienware laptop, so the time to switch to something newer is approaching fast. I'm torn between buying a cheaper gaming laptop from a popular brand, which carry a risk, or choose this one? Usually, the price was speaking for the popular brand, but the Slimbook pricing is right at where I wanted to spend, that is ca. 1500 EUR. So the question is, could I live with the above cons? Can I get use to them?

I tried to game on Linux and none of the games I play run "one-click". I'm talking about DotA 2 (have problems with shaders or smth) and Overwatch 2 (not supported on Linux). It's still doesn't feel like on Windows, where gaming is maybe less efficient, but yet easy and user-friendly.

If you told me "Gaming laptop" followed by "Linux", my answer would be "Tempting, if I needed one."
Nothing weird about using the arrow keys for gaming. It all depends on the genre of game. You use WASD for FPS games and arrows for platformers. _IF_ the developers haven't gotten sucked into a "WASD is God" mentality. So many platformers have been ruined by developers making them use WASD instead of the arrows. It makes your left hand do all the work, whereas with the arrows to move, it's more balanced. Always make movement and jumping controlled by different hands!
