    Like your vids. Try adding wipes between the shots where you end on a beat. Like a DnD and logo or your brand logo spinning. You're great at picking the right info and relaying it in a way that is friendly and accessible. You just need a little shiny. Keep it up!

      Spinning logos are a little out of my budget right now but maybe in the future! Glad you are enjoying the content and thanks for watching! 🎲👍🤓

    Great video. I agree with you! they are all the 'best' as long as you are having fun! EPIC ANSWER: I prefer rolling the dice because it injects a certain randomness that adds a little excitement (and its not like OS D&D where you had to roll 3d6 and your stats were rolled in order) and usually you end up with a hearty PC that you dont have to worry about accidently killing off with a stiff wind (unless the player just builds a bad character). I have most often used the point buy system though having played in a lot of organized settings. I also you love your house rule to re roll ones! Keep up the good work!

      I think rolling the dice is so fun! It's the excitement of not knowing what you'll get and I like doing it at the table with everyone so you can see and get excited about everyone's rolls 🤓 Thanks for watching!

    Followed a number of your clips for some time now, great to see the channel growing. TBH I expected a little more from this subject though. There are a few factors that are affected by the generation methods and none of that was covered off.
    Anyone that has used the rolling method will tell you that more than once they have killed the character at creation and rerolled again to get at least an all right set of stats. This is a longer method, total up to chance and not worth doing if you are just doing if you are going to keep rolling until you get something you like.
    Racial modifiers can push starting stats to 20 for primary attributes, players taking the first roll, choosing a RP race over Min Max suddenly your halfling fighter has 16 strength and your Elven Ranger running about with 20 Dex at 1st level. It also pushes you into some very high stats by 8th level you can be at 24. That is some deity level stats.
    The gap between party members needs to be thought of here. As the DM you will find that a 3 troll battle is needed to challenge player 1, but is more than enough to wipe out the rest of the party. Unbalancing the entire game, you wouldn't give only one player a legendary sword and everyone else nothing as it would show favouritism, yet we lets the stats do exactly this 5e.
    The Array system means that everyone has the same combined total, but is totally free to spread them where ever they think best, add in racial attributes and you have the flavour of the race now mixed in, Elf an agile, Half Orc is strong. It leaves room for attribute increases as you level without blowing out the game at lower levels. Lastly it is much faster to do as the scores are pre-generated. 1 bad, 4 average, 1 good. Go.
    People say its too dull, I say its a role playing game, if you are looking for excitement in your stats you have probably missed the core concept. Balance in the game enabled a more manageable story for the DM to cater for all players.

      These are some excellent points! I intended this video to help out the true beginners so I didn't cover modifiers yet, just how to get the base numbers. More videos coming to teach new players the ins and outs of the game and I didn't want to make any of them too long and overwhelm them. Glad you shared all these insights that they can pick up on too - thanks so much for watching 🤓🎲

      With the new rules in Tasha's its possible to come out of session zero with your prime stat at 18. If a player has a stat at 24 at level 8 and its breaking the game thats on the DM for giving out the magic item that made that happen.

    I personally use a system that generates random ability score distributions but always results in the same ability score total. For 5E, roll (3d4+5) three times. This generates the first three ability scores. For the remaining scores, subtract each of those three scores from 25. Then, arrange as desired.

      Ditto, though we once used (6) 3D6+4 with a rule that if it was over 18, it was just 18. One person managed to roll (3) ones... We all agreed to let them roll again and recommended they not buy lottery tickets for awhile. I have also seen some people, per DM, use (6) 3D6+6 but statistically that seems to generate abnormally high stats or at least it seems that way to me.

  • @zreyon
    @zreyon 3 роки тому +2

    Depends on the group and the feel of the game. If I knew my players wouldn't like having lower average scores than a teammate I'd tell them to all use the standard array for example. And if I want a less heroic game I'd even use plain 3d6, roll 7 times, pick the higher 6.

    Nice video Kristen! The problem with rolling is that you'll often end up with an unbalanced party -- one superhero PC with high stats who will outshine their compatriots. Especially for new players, this could be a pretty frustrating first experience for the people who rolled average numbers and end up "taking a back seat". I could see rolling stats for a one-shot, but not for a campaign, where I prefer to promote fairness across the party (I also use milestones instead of XP).

    • @briangauthier5802
      @briangauthier5802 3 роки тому

      I would say that if one party member is outshining the rest its not due to stats, its on the DM. Part of the DM's job is to make sure that the camera focuses on every party member and they have their moment to shine. This could be excellent time to introduce a high powered magic item that will pump up a party member with poor stats. A DM's job is never done...

      @@briangauthier5802 Sure you can try to fix the problem, or you can avoid the problem from the get-go by using point buy or standard array which are both allowed by RAW and do not detract in any way from having a fun game.

    I thought of a seemingly common hybrid dice roll method. 3d6 is strict in order where you put the points, 4d6 is roll four, remove the smallest. Well. I thought roll 3d6 BUT freely place the points as with 4d6 except no removing smallest number

    For 5E, because ability scores have so much mechanical importance, you should probably use point-buy, especially if your table is "open" and players might come in and out of the game between sessions. If your table is "closed", you could use 4d6 drop lowest for more variation between characters. These two methods average the same ability score total so character power should be mostly unaffected.
