I'm used to using the higher end pre emergents but tried Spectricide pre emergent to see if the results are similar. If Spectricide really works, that could be a huge plus in terms of convenience. Results pending👌
So helpful. The bag instructions were throwing me off and I have been holding off because of that. Your advice makes so much more sense. I will be applying today now. Thanks!!
Sept and March applications work for me since I have mostly centipede. Lowers the exposure to issues with stolon adhesion. Take care of the few weeds that make it through with a post-emerg.
Great video! I was away and couldn't watch this video when it came out and now I am glad I did!! Thanks for making things clear! I bought this product and was trying to get out in the morning to catch the dew! By the time I'd get out there, the dew was gone and I'd have to wait til the next window! LOL Thanks again for what you do!
I love weed stop for lawns that’s pretty much the first thing I ever put on my lawn a friend gave it to me as a housewarming gift I used it and afterwards I thought it killed my lawn but then I realized it kinda did because my yard was mostly all weeds and not much actual grass my yard was like 75% creeping Charlie and 75% percent dandelions …wait that’s too many percent … but you get the picture for the most part all I really did was consitantly cut my lawn at around 4”, I have mostly tall fescue with probably some KBG and perennial rye thrown in, I’m in PA so basically the typical northern cool season grasses, but just consistently mowing on the taller side and the occasional weed stop for lawns and while I may not have a golf course lawn it looks acceptable
So I have been dealing with new construction from end of last November. In the spring I messed up and put the blue scotts bag(pre-emergent) down when I seeded. 80% of seed failed to germinate. I learned my lesson. I scuffed up the ground a month after, and seeded winter rye. It was wonderful cover and it lived almost to the beginning of August before the heat killed it all. Mid-August I re-seeded KBG(w/tenacity). After sprout and pout, it's now taking off with fall nitrogen blitz. I just (waited 28 days after germ) hit it with post emergent(lots of weeds!!) this past weekend. Since its new grass, should I avoid pre-emergent, or just wait a bit longer to let the roots take up even more before laying down pre-emergent? Thanks!
My preference is to hold off on any herbicides in the first year. Of course, that is a very conservative approach, but I'm not too concerned with everything being just right. I'm in it for the process. I'd say hold off as it's still very new. Thanks for watching and the question.
I live in CT and temps here have been chilly in the mornings and around 60-70 degrees during the day. My lawn has many weeds and I want to save as much good grass I have to then seed in the future. Is it ok to apply this product right now? Thank you
If you're wanting to seed in the future anytime soon, you don't want to use this. It acts as a pre emergent and will prevent the seeds from germinating. I would look at a selective weed killer to only kill unwanted weeds and then you could seed a few weeks after the weeds are killed. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
I have recently found your channel and it has motivated me to give my lawn the attention it needs. I noticed the Spectracide weed stop granular bag notes that you can't seed until after 10 weeks of applying the weed stop. I live in North Carolina and have fescue grass since we are a transitional state. My grass is in horrible condition and I already have weeds that have started to come up. Weather is cold enough to frost my windshield in the morning but warm enough to sweat while outside during the day. I know I need to seed as I have a lot of bare spots and plan to dethatch today, but also have a huge weed problem. Do I really need to wait 10 weeks before I seed my lawn? If so, I will be outside of the window to do spring seating and it will be too hot and into the summer time frame. Would using the post-emergent spray be a better option, as I believe it only calls for 3 weeks until you can seed? Or perhaps I should only overseed and not focus on weed tactics until the fall? Appreciate any help.
Yes, I would wait. Pre-emergents prevent grass from growing from seed just as they do weeds. If you're really needing to seed, just don't worry about weeds right now. Those can always be taken care of later. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching the channel.
Thanks for the advice. like a lot of people on here, the instructions didn't make sense. it said don't water for 24 hours after application. so is it saying that for both pre-emergent use, you don't need to water it in? I kind of feel that it may work that way on wet grass but if you've already used it by watering it in for pre-emergent use and was successful, that's what I will do. Just don't want to have to wait 2 months to find out it doesn't work the way the instructions said. so went with your instruction for pre-emergent use.
I only use this as pre-emergent and water it in asap. I don't care about the post-emergent properties of this product. I use the Spectracide liquid for that, which shouldn't be watered in. Hope this clears it up. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
☀️Another great video! I actually compared Weed Stop in my last video and application cost was considerably more, but I have a lot of turf. Another tough break this weekend for our teams 😢
Thanks man. Yeah, for the big lawns, this may not be the most cost effective product. But for the 2500 sq ft I’ll be treating in the back lawn, one bag at 15 bucks ready for pickup at Lowes is tough to beat. 👍👍 Yup, tough to watch at this point. Ready for basketball haha. Thanks again!
Good info. I put my pre emergent down twice a year in November & February. Haven’t had much luck finding Spectricide weed stop. Where do you purchase it?

I didn’t apply pre emergent this spring I totally missed it. It is now the end of May and temperature is around 85-90 degrees. Can I still apply pre emergent or is it too late?
It wouldn't hurt. It could help limit the number of summer weeds you see cracking through. However, if you're not already seeing a lot of weeds, I wouldn't. At this point, I'd just spot treat with a post emergent those areas that need it most. That's what I'm doing at least. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

I'm so frustrated 😭 I bought my house 2 years ago. It was nothing but weeds. I have used weed killer and plucked it clean, by hand, twice. I have started it from seeds twice as well. Last fall my grass was perfect. Finally. The snow just melted now and once again is nothing but weeds😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
@@BudgetLawns i couldn't last year, cause it was the second time the lawn was brand new. (I killed the first one last spring when killing the weeds😞) As in, grass finally grew at the end of the fall. it looked perfect. Winter was harsh in northern Utah and the snow just melted this week.
Label says safe for St. Augustinegrass (except ‘Floratam’). Be sure to always double check the label before taking my word for it. I do the best I can to help but can be wrong from time to time. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
Actually, with spray-on weed killers, that’s how they work. I use to constantly spray round up on the ground of areas I was trying to kill and it never worked until I finally read the label and found that you are supposed to spray the leaves of what you’re trying to kill as the leaves FEED the root. So, to kill the root, you MUST spray the leaves.
Ah gotcha. Yeah that threw me off more as a disagreement. Thanks for clearing it up. You are right though. Post emergent should go on the leaves for best results.

I started with some education about why people might not want to use a pre-emergent. For the reasons I mentioned, it would be a bad time. Folks should know those reasons. That's valuable information if you ask me. Please tell me how I didn't get to the point?
Thanks for the video! I did just put mine down just a few days ago and now I feel bad because the city laid sod down almost 3 weeks ago (it’s mostly rooted) and I put a little spectricide on it. 🫤😕

I threw this down last year prior to the winter rains, and I still got lots of Fox Tail, I guess it does not work on that. It was only dirt.
Yeah, you’d have to check the label to see if foxtail is listed. I’m not sure on that one.
Are you using a pre emergent in the fall?
@@BudgetLawns i couldn't last year, cause it was the second time the lawn was brand new. (I killed the first one last spring when killing the weeds😞) As in, grass finally grew at the end of the fall. it looked perfect. Winter was harsh in northern Utah and the snow just melted this week.
Is it safe for st augustine?
Label says safe for St. Augustinegrass (except ‘Floratam’). Be sure to always double check the label before taking my word for it. I do the best I can to help but can be wrong from time to time. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
Yea sir, if you haven’t put out pre emergent, today is a great day to do so …
👍👍 Appreciate ya!
I don’t think you were listening very closely. I think I made that very clear in the video. Multiple times in fact.
@@BudgetLawns I was just agreeing….Maybe I shouldn’t have used “actually” to start off the sentence.
Ah gotcha. Yeah that threw me off more as a disagreement. Thanks for clearing it up. You are right though. Post emergent should go on the leaves for best results.
Does it kill Dollarweed?
Dollarweed is listed on the product label as being a weed controlled.
I hate granular stuff..............pisses me off :) how about the liquid used as a pre=emergent.
The liquids do not have a pre-emergent ingredient. There are products you can buy to mix with water but not from Spectracide. Thanks for watching.
👍🏻
👊👊
This product is no where to be found in my area of tx.
Hmmm. Bummer. I’ve seen it at all my lowes this season. Web says it’s available at my lowes. Sorry man. I’d go with whatever lowes or Home Depot has if ya can’t find it. I’m sure it’ll work just fine. Thanks for watching.
💯🔥
Thank ya. 👊👊
Hey Buddy
Oh hey man. Enjoyed the live last week. Y'all were great in the chat.
👍✌️
👊👊 thank you.
Nothing from, Spectracide has ever worked for me!
Always work great for me. All these products come down to applying them at the ideal time in the right conditions. Check out some of my other vids where I break down how I see success. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
You talk, like you are preaching the gospels
I've heard that a time or 20, lol. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Not a science project, spit it out
Whining about things always makes it better. Tell me how it works out for ya this time.
Get to the point please
I started with some education about why people might not want to use a pre-emergent. For the reasons I mentioned, it would be a bad time. Folks should know those reasons. That's valuable information if you ask me. Please tell me how I didn't get to the point?
I’m just waiting on a spectracide coupon code using budgetlawns
Haha. You’ll be waiting a looooong time. 🤣🤣
@@BudgetLawns I saw the thumbnail and immediately though, “brought to you by the makers of Spectracide…”
Only on Budget Lawns can you hear a guy talk about his lawn without being sent to a product link below.

👍👊👍👊
Thanks for the video! I did just put mine down just a few days ago and now I feel bad because the city laid sod down almost 3 weeks ago (it’s mostly rooted) and I put a little spectricide on it. 🫤😕
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching. Don’t sweat it. These are just best practices but I’m sure everything will be just fine. It all works out in the end.
