So yeah, as the comments below demonstrate, there's clearly a LOT more that goes into this game than initially meets the eye. The point of the video is to allude to the depth in a general sense, otherwise this video would drag on for like 30 minutes and that would defeat the purpose of this channel (brevity). I really just wanted to get across that you shouldn't give up on this game despite its rough start, that's all. Anyway, please feel free to add your experiences with 7th Saga in the comments here, keep it up!

SNES drunk Hey bud. Just wanted to let you know that I think what your trying to do is amazing. Your taking games that weve all seen rise to new levels, while others havnt. We've all seen the rise of consoles and graphics while the new genration of gamers have not. Because were all there, its good that you keep these games alive, they are such good games. I wanted to say thank you, alot of what you review and post are amazing games. The younger kids should see what their missing out on. Sorry I didnt hear about you sooner Bro..😎

I grew up with this game and yes I chose Valsu and Esuna for my first playthrough because I LOVE mage characters...of course I died a lot, but somehow I was able to beat the game with them. I never gave up!
Had a childhood friend that was like a brother to me for years. Moved to the other side of the country around our teens, we and eventually lost contact entirely. Recently found out that he had passed away nearly a decade ago, and my mind immediately went to us trying to beat Seventh Saga together. Strange feelings around this game now.

I went from an awesome school & friends & people to find out Florida is over crowded school of idiot kids cause teachers didn't care.

Are you kidding? Lejes was my first pick in this game way back when since it was rare that a game let you play an "evil" character - and I was promptly beaten by other heroes and Red Pison over and over until I ragequit.
Then, when I came back to the game not long after that, I chose Esuna and, after some level-grinding, started to destroy enemies because of her ridiculously powerful magic and high agility that practically let her go first all the time. It was also a great boon that people trust the Elf far more than they did the Demon. :)
Still one of my more beloved off-mainstream RPGs of the Golden Age of video games.

Lejes is a pain in the butt to play as, but it can be so rewarding sometimes.
Lejes is the man IMO. Not many games, JRPGs in particular, let you play as a completely self-serving demon. Esuna's my second-favorite though.

I always go for true mage builds first and foremost when given the option of a character type, but I also generally like to try the weird, unique, and/or interesting ones. I love Lejes as a character build, though - as you put it - he is completely self-serving, which even shows in the spells he learns over time. Unfortunately, as much as I try to be self-sufficient, I have a very support-heavy personality, so characters like Esuna, Valsu, and even Kamil generally fit my play style better - partially for their team-based playstyles, and partially because they're more likely to actually team up with others. It's probably not a surprise that Red Mage is my absolute favorite class in Final Fantasy, at least in fitting my natural style. :)
Back then and even now, I could never really like characters like Lux and Wilme, though I would play them if I knew that there were little bits of story specific only to them. While I'm just incredibly picky with my fantasy sci-fi elements (I like Wren and Mieu of Phantasy Star, but not Lux, Adam of Shining Force, Worker 8 of FFT, or even Robo of Chrono Trigger), I generally find characters that are just natural physical powerhouses (especially with confrontational personalities, like Wilme) boring to play. At least Kamil and Olvan get to deal with buying/finding new gear, and Kamil is rounded out with some magic (even if others are just much better at it).
Valsu's my third-favorite, and I also tend to favor support classes. :) For me I tended to avoid Olvan, Kamil, and Lux the most; Olvan because he's so slow (Generally don't care to play tank-like characters in general), Kamil because I can play as a male swordsman in a thousand other RPGs (But at least he gets some magic to make him a bit more interesting), and Lux has the problem of being slow IIRC AND making the annoying clunking noise that drives me nuts whenever he walks.
I also like Mieu and Wren but don't care much for Worker 8 or Robo either...huh, interesting. Adam I can give-or-take; IIRC he has a naturally low movement score, plus he takes a lot of work to build up by the time you get him, so I'm not too partial to him.
Good point about Lux's walking noise. Haven't played as him or with him in a while, so I actually forgot about that. His battle speed doesn't really matter so much since he's so damned tanky, though, and Olvan can be tanky if geared up well. If Lejes or Esuna were that slow, it'd be a deal breaker for them since they can easily be one-shotted by many of the enemies.
Of the robots I don't like, I'd probably say I like Robo the most, if only because he has a bit of variety in his "magic" (lasers and healing) and some of his Double- and Triple-techs are cool to watch, not to mention devastating if he's leveled and geared well. Weirdly, Lux is probably next on that list, followed by Adam (I generally much prefer the Dwarves to him). Worker 8 takes the bottom of the barrel here, who I just found to be not at all worth the hassle of unlocking and even keeping in the reserves.
Oh, I forgot about T260G of Saga Frontier... I actually like how mechs work in that game, though he's still pretty much my least-favorite hero (in order of fave to least fave: Lute, Blue / Asellus [they are tied for me], Emelia, Red, Riki, then T260G). I'd say that I like T260G more than any of the above robots, but still less than Wren and Mieu. :)
When I'm 90 years old, with dementia and in a retirement home, the last thing that will still work in my brain is my knowledge of this game. I played it to death as a kid. It's notoriously difficult and grindy. What I love is how much challenge and strategy despite such simple (maybe even downright primitive) battle mechanics.
The different characters provide lots of replayability. The no-nonsense enemies that can kill you in 1 or 2 hits really makes you think on your feet and you're forced to use every ability you have to try to survive. No bullshit like "I'm going to save all my MP for the boss". You need everything you have your disposal for every random encounter. I love how the game is fast paced too, the battles don't drag on forever. There has never been a RPG that has me full of adrenaline as I race to exit the dungeon and try to get back to town to heal, because I know the next enemy encounter is probably going to kill my party.
I also thought the crystal ball mechanic was a really cool alternative to random encounters. I'm surprised no other game since has tried a similar system.
Make no mistake a lot of the beauty and charm of this game is entirely by accident. A lot of the mechanics are broken. You can even get yourself into a couple situations where the game is impossible to beat and you have to reset. What's really comical is that the original japanese version of this game, called Elnard is stupidly easy. They ported it to America changed it from toddler easy to impossibly hard.
If you're new to this game and want to sail through it, there's actually a glitch you can take advantage of. The trick is: Never fight any apprentice unless you have to for the story, and always change your partner every chance you get. As you level up, the apprentices (both when you fight them, and when they join you) will also level up, but they get insane stat boosts from the Japanese version. They also get new equipment so you never have to buy them anything. If you need to grind, kill your partner, grind solo for double exp, then swap them for a new partner who will be freshly generated at your level, with the glitched stat bonuses, and up to date equipment. If you really like your old partner you can just swap back to them and they will be leveled up.
One of my favorite ways to play now is actually do a solo run with Esuna. Meaning never get another apprentice as your partner and finish the whole game solo. Its very tough but surprisingly doable when you really nail down the battle mechanics (agility is the most important stat in the game, use mp catchr often to restore your mp etc..). When you play a solo run, it's also much less grindy as now you don't have to split the experience points in half.

Try Etrian Oddysey, Wizardry or Mother.
Is it even POSSIBLE to defeat Lux under normal circumstances? He always murdered me immediately, no matter what I did.
this is definitely an rpg that appeals to the "i take beating games as a personal challenge" crowd. I managed to beat it with Esuna and Valsu, and my brother beat it with Wilme and Lejes. My little brother also figured out that Wilme can in fact equip the weapon "sword" which is dropped by...swords. anyway, it's +10 to his attack and the only weapon we know Wilme can equip.

Not that it is that important, but a slight bonus is still a bonus.
When starting the game: Simply stay right next to the first town. If you play as Kamil, you can sell one of the MHerb1's which will give you enough money to buy a new sword which is better than the one you started with which really helps give you an edge over the enemies. If you run into a bird before getting at least Lv3, you went too far. Stay closer to the first town, like, just stand right outside of town. The bugs can't kill you unless you really do something wrong.
ALWAYS defend before attacking. Someone in the first town tells you this. This means every other round you take half damage and you deal double damage the round after. Unless the enemy only has a small slice of health and you know you can kill it, of course.
I've beaten the game with every single character, and while Valsu is a good pair with Kamil... if you really want to laugh at the time, what you do is get Olvan as a side-kick.
Also, level solo. The game is grindy enough, last thing you need is your XP gains being cut in half because you have a 2-person party. Basically, if you want to go the Kamil+Olvan route, you MUST pick up Olvan before arriving at Melenam (the underground ruined tech city). If you don't, he will warp ahead to the Star Rune and the NPC you fight for the Star Rune is permanently killed.
Once you get Olvaan in your party, get him killed so that he's in your party, but you still gain full XP. He will not level up, but then he doesn't need to. With him dead, your XP gains are double what most peoples' would be.
As for asking someone to join your party, save your game before asking them. If they want to fight you, or if they refuse, simply reset the game, go outside of town, and fight 5-10 random battles and then save your game again and talk to the NPC again. This works, until you fight and defeat an NPC, then they will be forever hostile to you.
Another neat trick is when an NPC joins your group, they will always be your level with appropriate equipment for the level. We can exploit this by leveling Kamil up to Lv80 before a certain point in the plot and then, revive Olvaan, find anybody else (anybody) who will join your group, let them join to kick Olvaan out. Then, go fight some random battles and track Olvaan down and get him to join your group again.
When he does, he will have endgame gear, the best weapon in the game, etc and will absolutely destroy everything in your path until you get to the last town and get that kind of gear for Kamil, lol.
Great tips there. Some stuff I didn't even know after playing through this a bunch of times.
I rigged my SNES Advantage to grind for me!
However, since then I've discovered Zombies Ate My Neighbors and hadn't played too much 7th Saga these days.

I love this game. It's not difficult so much as it is a grindfest. One mistake most people make is not defending. ALWAYS defend, then attack. The attack after you defend will do far more damage, and you will take far less. Early on at least, this is the one old school JRPG where you actually must use the defense command to stand much of a chance.
I grew up on JRPGs like the original Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior, and Phantasy Star II, so I'm sure it helped prepare me for this game when it arrived. Loved the hell out of it!

Yup yup. Defend then attack is key, especially if you have a melee reliant character. I think it works with magic too, but I don't recall. There is an NPC or two that gives you tips in the first castle. This is definitely a game where you want to talk to EVERYONE, just to see if they have useful tips.
@@TabbyWesa Nah, the Defend command doesn't affect your magic attacks. It will still reduce incoming damage and if you suspect that a boss is going to do something nasty on the next turn, definitely defend even if you are playing a caster lol.

Esuna is not that bad for a first playthrough. Her Ice magic is really good early game. Just make sure you stay near town at the start so you level up until you unlock healing.
It's a frustrating grindy game but has a unique atmosphere, an interesting range of characters and great monster design.
I frequently rented this game as a kid, and while I never got too far, I always kept trying. Then again,y first RPGs were Wizardry and Dragon Warrior, so I'm used to the grind. It's worth it.
This is my 3rd favorite RPG for SNES. It left a huge impression on me when I was young. It was one of my favorite games at the time. I never thought it was difficult at all until l was in my 40s and looking around the internet if anyone else had fond memories of the game. I do not recall dying once in the entire time I played- which I played as every 2-person combo in the game. Sunk hundreds of hours into this game.
It s possible not to die....but highly unlikely.

Had a love/hate relationship with this game when I played it as a kid.
Hate to admit it, but I think this is the only game I ever broke a controller over. Constantly resetting because of how hard the fights vs the other heroes were :p

Until you softlock yourself because there's no mechanically possible way to beat the last rival because of which one it might be / how the random levelups worked / other issues mostly beyond your control. It's totally possible to sink hundreds of hours into 7th Saga and then be 100% unable to complete the game without doing anything wrong.
@@GiordanDiodato depends what you're looking for. I adore both of those games but they are also two of the three games that turned jrpgs from my beloved grindy dragon quest clones to the casual escapist power fantasy games they've become.
The third game was Mario RPG. Mario rpg, Chrono trigger, and ff6 are all amazing games but I prefer old schooly grind fests.
Agreed. When I played 7th Saga as a teenager, it was one of the more frustrating games I played during the SNES era. However, it was just so exciting knowing that the other characters were out there searching for the Runes, or possibly searching for you. During my first playthrough, I had to take the Runes from the other characters by force, as I was too slow to find most of them. On my second play through, however, I managed to get all the runes before anyone else.
Yeah the rival thing is so cool. The saddest thing is its all fake and scripted there is no real AI, and they arent actually playing the game like you. Too bad we never got an RPG where they actually did this. This idea is still unique and not done 30 years later. Creating a real AI that finished an RPG though would be no small easy task, but the rpg would play out different every single time.
@@wildwest1832 this is why it's a game that deserves a remake. It's average/below average for its time, but very ambitious and creative in some ways, which could def be achieved in a remake.
One may argue that 7th Saga is *Dark Souls* of SNES JRPGs.

I remember being absolutely obsessed with SNES RPGs in the 90s and this one was no different. I love everything about it and although it doesn’t have much of a story; when you figure out what the story actually is including the ending (my friends were so confused), it’s amazing!
Put me in the camp that love this game. The insane difficulty was kind of a feature back in the day if you could only get one game every couple of months. The music is almost on the level of some PC Engine CD games, it's so well done.

This was gold when I was 14. I love it. I beat it with everyone except the robot. Defending is the key.
Yeah, the robot is kind of slow if you don't know how to level him up right.
If you ever played him through to Melanam, he gets great upgrades there.

This game was my first foray into automation.I had one of those big joystick pads for the SNES. I remember taping the stick to the right, setting the A button to Auto, and leaving for school. Lejes would one-shot hermit bugs for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. It was the only way to progress in this game!

This game`s balance was completely ruined in western localisation. There is a patch made by fans, which returns original difficulty level.

@@jephloebsucks Well for example, in the JP version, every 10 levels the max ability gain per level was increased. In the US release, they are determined by class only and never increase. Read: Maximum stats at high levels are VERY different between the two versions. Example: Lets use The knight. If I remember correctly, he could get a minimum of 2 and a max of 4 on all stats. (even if im wrong it will indicate the issue) At level 10-19, he could get a minimum of 3 and a max of 5. At 20-29, min of 4 and max of 6, etc.
Buff items are extremely important in this game. They'll reduce your need to grind for boss fights.

I love the art style for this game.
The ROM hack doesn't just make the game easier, it restores the character balance and stat rise from the original version. Somehow, when preparing the US release, they screwed up the stat levels, and no one found it or cared about it. 7th Saga isn't hard; it's broken. That said, my buddy and I beat it a long time ago, and good god was that an absurd amount of grinding.
The reduced XP and gold was an intentional decision to lengthen the game, but the stat reduction was an oversight, as it still applies to the other characters as they level separately from you. Admittedly the stat gains are already random and you can still get slightly screwed, but it's a lot better. Especially since the stupid stat gains still apply to the other 6 when they aren't in your party and gain levels.

Back on snes I rented it as a kid. People beat the game legit back on snes without save states. Dedication back then, but yeah the game is ridiculously hard.

I got to say I don't remember much about 7th Saga.. I was about to say I never played it before but when you mentioned the crystal ball I remembered playing it only once. Game was a huge pain. I wasn't aware of its other features I don't even think I got that far. Good review!
One of my fav game as a kid. But what specially made this game memorable for me and quite nostalgic really are the songs. They're so good!
The Jrpg That got me into Rpgs. will always hold it dearly to my heart. also one of a few games that really pushed me to learn how to read
One of the best things about 7th saga is that who you chose and the actions you take can change how you progress and what paths and shortcuts you can take

I think the encounters with other rune seekers are scripted for them to be stronger than you.
I love this title, but OMG the grind of leveling just to do the first couple dungeons is crazy. But if you want a Jrpg with a challenge this is the one to get.

@@loicvolle6840, yeah, Valsu is hard to start as, cause he doesn't have weapon skills or attack spells.
Pretty much you have to do 1 battle and if you win go save.
At lv 3 or 4 he learns Ice and the playing field has changed. Now he can take care of enemas fast like Esuna does.
Valsu never learns spells to attack all enemies, so he is always slow to finish battles.
I love this game! It's honestly one of my favorite Snes games ever made.

I love this game… and Esuna and Valsu are tough to start with but worth it to try just for the higher boosts later… just don’t expect to be able to keep your runes…

I loved this game. I remember having to hang around areas before moving on to farm for exp though. Glad to know it wasnt just me.
To anyone who is interested in playing this: Strategize. A player can manipulate turn order (to an extent), there are item versions of buff spells (and buffs matter!), some encounters are just way stronger than their local peers (so work around them), death is a setback but it isn't a gameover (unless you're flat broke and can't raise funds to revive your ally).
I've read a LP where a guy basically didn't grind levels at all until a specific point very late in the game, where the danger spikes real bad. Pretend it's a SMT game and you'll probably be fine.
Watching this made me think if this could get remade but in the same style as say Skyrim. Still with the seven characters with their own motivations but it allows for the entire concept to be done much more interestingly. It could be fun like that.

I owned this game as a kid and we beat it. It's insane. Back in the day a guy only had so many games. I've had to reset a couple games because the other competing players were just too ridiculous. Also i'm pretty sure iirc Willam is the best guy to pick and him and the robot are the best combo.
No, teaming Wime and Lux the robot stupid. Neither has healing magic.

Beat this game back in the day with Lux and Esuna. One of my proudest achievements. I think, like FF1, that if you take away the difficulty it loses a lot of what made it engaging. You have to think about every battle, strategically use items and the defend command, and choose the right time to fight your rival. I also really like the idea of picking from a group of seven characters that engage with the world in different ways. Olvan can get a bunch of cash in his dwarven home, Lejes is so loathed that he has to find a different way to next continent, Lux can get an upgrade in a spoiler town.
All the characters take the same path to the northern continent, via submarine.
Except Lux & Ezuna take the boat.
Probably because they are less intimidating to the little boy.
I also have heard that Olvan takes a towee and teleports in some versions.
However, LeJes takes the standard path with Kamil, Wilme, & Valsu.

I happen to have played this game a bunch in the past couple of years.
Been through it with every apprentice, both with a companion and solo.
I even made notes.
Loved this game on my SNES back in the day. I believe Valsu was my first playthrough, and then I tried Lejes on a second. Played Lux and Wilme quite a ways through as well, but it's been so long that I don't remember if I beat it with them.
This is the first time I heard of someone who played Lux. I always felt lonely.
Lux and Esuna always sounded like a solid duo for me.
When I had this on Snes, I used an autofire joystick to auto level outside the first town. You have to hold down left or right on the stick (so you cant open your spell menu out of battle) and autofire on the confirm button. You can level pretty consistantly like this as the Exp needed to level doesn't go up drastically each level. You can easily reach level 10 in a few hours of afk grinding like this, more if you grind overnight.

7th Saga is a game that one must be committed to playing. Part of the experience, much like life, is fighting many battles and building up your strength and skill so that you can eventually blast through your opponents with ease and without defeat. To that end, it can be tedious and at times a chore, but hey- no pain, no gain. 💜✌🏻
I LOVED this game. First RPG I really really was a fan of.
I managed to finish this game years back. It seems as if grinding is a good idea, right up until you have to fight the healer character for a rune. That's when you find out that the other characters level up with you as he dumps high level ice magic on your head.
Oddly, I remember trying to get the sequel. Radio Shack had it listed in their catalog, and I kept asking about it. Without the Internet, there was no way to find out the game had been cancelled.
I played 7th Saga for the first and only time when it came out. I played the alien tank and though it was tough, I didn't die every five minutes. I teamed up with the elf mage and made some decent progress. Didn't beat it, because I had to return it and couldn't get it again. It was always rented out if I recall and I couldn't afford it. And the price never went down even in second hand stores. But I remember really loving this game. The Alien was kind of a weird aspect for a fantasy RPG, but it worked out well as far as gameplay. never had to buy weapons or armor. his stuff leveled with him. If what you say is true, I could definitely see why people don't like this games, but I really loved it.
You definitely picked one of the best teams possible.
It'd be cool if you did 10 minute episodes. Maybe there's not enough to talk about in these games but I enjoy listening to your calm voice and insight you have on games.

I started with Lux, and I thought it was generally quite easy to level up and get through the game. He was kinda OP, as he doesn't require money to be spent on items, as I recall. I only played with just my one guy though. I never teamed up with anyone. Maybe that's why I got stuck with Kamil at the end when the demon was unbeatable because I had leveled so much. lol.
Lejes was my favorite☆ He has great offense like many black magic and weapon!

But he was terrible with magic and I found myself trying to be a warrior with him.
However, he isn't that strong, and didn't get great equipment selection.
The only benefit to choosing LeJes is that he only gets 1 accesory armor
in stores, so you might as well keep wear the amulet if you find it.
It's like playing as a jinxed Kamil.
Funny, I remember the game being a bit hard at the beginning, but not *that* hard. I chose the Demon as my main character, but as soon as I allied myself with the Robot (very useful tank) the rest of the game went without too much problems. I was pleasantly surprised by the ending (nice twist).
It's not difficult in the beginning if you stay near the first town, and just keep going back into town to heal yourself after every couple of battles, until you level up
I remember this one. I thought it was cool but I didn't want to play past the first boss due to the excessive grinding. I felt like I was wasting my time. A few years ago I discovered the restoration patch and boy the original version rocks. I haven't done a full playthrough yet because of my studies. I think I had three orbs when I stopped. Once I have enough time I'm going to beat it. Seriously, if you played the american version and thought it was to hard, give the patch a try, you will be surprised. It's a really good game that got broken during the localization.

It really doesn't have THAT much grind. I have a 25h save with my characters being a couple levels shy of max level (80) and I have about 2-3 hours of story content left. I think a 30h JRPG is about standard.
Speaking as someone who has done a semi-casual run of this game in far less time (~16 hours) and at a much lower level (~35) than most people who have beaten it expect purely to prove that the 7th Saga does not require grinding, I can safely say that the game's biggest flaw is not its difficulty, but rather (or more specifically) its expectation of the player to exploit "advanced" knowledge of the game. This comes largely in the form of "hidden" items that can only be found by using the "Search" command in unintuitive locations, which in the 7th Saga's defense is not unique to it and was standard fare for Enix RPGs of the time. The other major issue is that speed acts as the game's god-stat since it governs accuracy and evasion for both physical and magical attacks - being underleveled often means that you can't even land a hit on anything you're fighting.
Excessive grinding is thus not *entirely* necessary, but it does require a willingness to save scum for "good" speed gains on every level and to know where all of the best equipment is and to beeline for it (skipping the treasure chests in any given area on your initial run through is actually a very good tip). This also means that the three characters with the lower speed gains - Kamil, Olvan and Lux - will simply end up grinding more by very the nature of the game's design. Incidentally, those three are also the only ones who can really take a hit, and so going through the game quickly unsurprisingly also comes along with the acceptance of the fact that you're just going to die a lot no matter what you do.
Beat it with Lejes and Lux. Took FOREVER! It was due back at the video store at 6pm. I beat it at 5:50pm. Didn't watch the credits or anything because I didn't want to pay another 3 dollars for returning it late. Good ol' days...

Did a solo grind with Olvan, played as Wilme, Lux, and Lejes with varying degrees of success., never got around to Kamil, Esuna, or Valsu. Very underrated game.
7th Saga is awesome! I'm glad I discovered this one since I am a sucker for RPGs
The robot Lux was my favourite. A tanky robot seeking answers as to who made him, and he shoots fricking laser beams from his arms! How cool is that??

Trick to this game is using everything it gives you. The items the runes, the spells. Lux and Esuna where my favorite starters normally.
I found this game back in 1999 and have loved it from that time on. I don't mind the grind and the high difficulty i find to be enjoyable due to most RPG games from the mid 90's being too easy.
I first fell in love, then hated and finally loved the game. For me the game was not difficult, rather the difficulty lies in it being too repetitive and void of tactics. I bought and used items, without them the game would be really too much. Still I had to take a long pause from the game, too much grinding and forced enemy encounters.
What the game makes right is this: Music, graphics and the huge world. I really felt lost over time and I really love the world that you encounter out there. I'd like to play it again, because of how I know evolved into a more powerful player, maybe I can find a way to make the battlesystem not as repetitive and the game more challenging (tacticalwise).

I love the difficulty of this game. To me, it's one of the things that really set this one apart from all the other RPGs of its time. This is easily one of my favorites, coming second only to (unsurprisingly) Chrono Trigger.
Loved this game as a kid. I remember reading books as I spammed left/right blindly with one hand to prompt a battle in an area I was over leveled for, then spamming attack, repeat....for HOURS, just to grind enough to beat it. #Multitasking

I remember renting this and being pissed about it
I got this first got this game in 1993 after I saw it advertised in Nintendo Power. At the time, it was the most badass looking RPG I had ever scene. I first played as Kamil and I thought it was super fun. However, I eventually lost interest and gave up due to it’s difficulty. Fast forward 23 years and I gave it another whirl this time as Lejes. Same deal; fun at first but gave up when it got too hard. In 2018, I tried again as Esuna but also gave up. Finally, this summer, 2020 I tried it again and decided that I wouldn’t stop until I beat the game. I played as Kamil with Esuna as my partner and I beat the game at level 60 with 68 hours and 33 minutes of gameplay. It was tough! My brain felt like mush by the time I completed it. Then the ending happened and I was like... what?! Lol
Now try it as Wilme and beat the game at lv 55.

I've played the game through with all characters, even going at it alone.
Once you know the game, it's not that bad without healing magic.
Esuna is my favorite companion.
Except as Valsu, I would pick Lejes. As Esuna I likd Kamil as my companion.
Actually, the 1st time I beat the game, I was Kamil and had Olvan as my companion. We both were strong and could heal, while I could use some attack magic.
I played this as a rental, so it became a marathon to finish - and I did finish it. The story had an epic quality, and by the end, I felt like I had been through an experience similar to all 3 books of LOTR. The defeat and rebirth near the end was remarkably emotional, and left me feeling sadness for the loss of the previous world, and hopeful for the victory to come.
i dont often play what you recommend ( i guess watching someone passionate about snes is enough for me) but i played this one and i feel cursed because i loved it so so much and there isnt more

I liked the robot. One time I had a few runes and teamed up with the demon. Things were going well until I fell in a battle. When I woke up, that demon bastard had robbed me. Everyone in the town told me he had just left. I'll never forget it. Still love the game.
7th Saga is a very cool game, but I'd consider it borderline-unplayable for the average JRPG fan without the difficulty rebalance hack. The localization team got way carried-away with inflating the difficulty for the sake of discouraging rentals, but I guess they deserve credit for influencing the creation of "challenge hacks/mods" in JRPG's for the diehards that have the time and patience for that sort of thing.
playing through this game for the first time, the defense tip will hopefully help. i hope i didn't mess up by picking dwarf as my main character.
My friend is having me play Seventh Saga and I started as the demon and named him RANDY and now he's a beloved character in our D&D campaign, it helps that I really started to enjoy the game though lol
